5 The Square Originally the Square, known as St. Peter s Field, was built on the southern edge of Manchester in the late 18th Century and soon became the focus of the town s intellectual and cultural activity. In 1907 St. Peter s Church was demolished and the Central Library and Town Hall Extension built from The 21st Century vision for St. Peter s Square was for it to become a world-class defining component in Manchester s Civic and new business quarter; a wholly integrated, pedestrianised square which lives and breathes dynamism, confidence and creativity. Manchester City Council has invested 185 million into the Square as part of the transformation and redevelopment of Library Walk, Central Library and Town Hall Extension.
