1 Inside News Trips Activities Information I m a BEA volunteer Kirsten Miller Meet the PCSO Leanne Broadhead Team BEA cuts a fine dash for 2014 Welcome to BEAm. Your feedback shows people find it professional and easier to read. We are excited that Rachel Reeves, MP and her husband will run for Team BEA in November s Abbey Dash. We have challenged Age UK Leeds to see which team has the highest average age! You can run, walk or use your wheelchair - we will try to find volunteers to push - on a flat course of 10 km (about 6 miles). Proceeds will go towards re-opening Bramley Lawn. Please speak with Lee Ingham for more information. We are planning a fundraising event at Elland Road next September: Think Big for BEAm newsletter Autumn BEA volunteers with the Lord Mayor of Leeds at Bramley Carnival. Please let us know if you have any good business links. Please find enclosed a nomination form for recruitment to BEA s Board. It describes the process and the experience we are seeking. Finally, you may be wondering what s happening at Bramley Lawn? Why not come to the AGM to find out? It s a great time to get together and chat. Please come along and show your support. Free food, refreshments and transport are available. Please let us know on the reply form if you will be coming to the AGM, and if you would like transport. 1

Towards a dementia friendly city Leeds City Council has signed up to making the city a dementia friendly community. Friendly, dedicated, lifeline. 5. What do you get out of volunteering? I very much enjoy my weekly stints helping out on the minibus. I ve made some good friends among the members and it gives me a chance to have a break from work and get involved in the community. 6. What else do you like doing? I love what I do I m a polymer clay artist. 7. Where were you born? Glasgow 8. What s your favourite film? 1986 film, Labyrinth. 9. And your favourite book? Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier. 10. Tell us one interesting fact about yourself I was the Scottish Junior Archery Champion in 1986, and I represented Scotland in a number of international archery competitions! See for more volunteers stories Meet the PCSO Leanne Broadhead Police Community Support Officer Leanne, who s lived all her life on the edge of Wakefield, has been a PCSO for about 5 years. PCSOs are often people s first point of contact with police, helping with issues like low-level crime such as anti-social behaviour, car crime and criminal damage. They are trained in First Aid and security advice, so can go to people s homes, do assessments, and advise on how to improve home security. Leanne, whose beat covers Bramley, Stanningley and Rodley, enjoys meeting people and working in the community. She pops in to schools, old people s homes and community centres, and is a regular visitor at the BEA drop-in. Leanne says older people are always particularly friendly and helpful, more likely than younger people to be involved in a neighbourhood watch, and more likely to be home during the day, and see what s going on. Leanne often pops in to see older people who have been burgled, to offer reassurance and have a chat. She lets them know what s going on in the community, and where else they can get help. She is one of 11 PCSOs on the Bramley beat, based in Pudsey police station.
