1 Queensferry Care ews Annual General Meeting Queensferry Churches Care in the Community held its AGM last month and a packed gathering at The Haven heard Chairman Peter FitzGerald pay tribute to the many people, businesses and organisations in the area whose support had restored the organisation to sound financial health during the previous twelve months. He stressed that this support had been crucial in maintaining and enhancing the range of Day Care, Home Support, Befriending, and Carer Support activities in which the organisation specialised. This commitment to the creation and promotion of a society that supports older people with disabilities, provides respite for carers, comfort and company to those socially isolated, and a better quality of life to older people generally, is both widelyshared locally and very strong. It s what transforms mere dwelling places into true communities he said. Caring Matters, our 2007 Annual Report is available from The Haven at 25b Burgess Road. or contact Manager Liz McIntosh on Marion Critchley Marion Critchley recently retired as Company Secretary and a member of the Board after 11 years service. However Marion's first involvement with Queensferry Care goes back about 14 years when her late husband provided personnel advice to the founders John Carrie and Douglas Stuart and Marion provided the typing support to the project administration. Marion was originally appointed as the Secretary to the Management Committee and then became the Secretary to the Company when it was formed shortly thereafter. Her attention to detail was invaluable in the changeover to a limited company. Peter Fitzgerald made a presentation to Marion at the Annual General Meeting recently and thanked her for her outstanding service. Marion continues to help our work at the Haven as a volunteer. It was a very pleasant day for a walk not too cold and not too warm. Hopetoun also supplied us with complimentary refreshments at the end of the walk. Paris Marathon QCCC Golf Open Brenda O Donahue Brenda ran the Paris Marathon in April, clocking a time of 3hrs 25min. She raised the fantastic sum of over 600 for Queensferry Care. Brenda is Rob Keating s cousin. She is from Killarney in Ireland. and is currently working in Edinburgh as a civil engineer. Thank You Brenda. On a warm sunny day, on the 14th May our Annual Golf event at Dundas Parks Golf Club raised over The 11 teams that took part had a great day out and the scores were good as well. Last year s winners Queensferry Parish Church did it again winning by 3 strokes from the team from Kirkliston Masonic Lodge. Thanks have to go to Dundas Parks Golf Club, the sponsors, and teams that took part. Thanks also to Shonagh (Ferry Tap) for providing a delicious buffet. We will be holding the event again next year, and the organising committee will be reviewing QPC team handicaps!

3 Queensferry Care Page 3 Next, I was off to R.A.F. St Athens, in South Wales. The disaster at Aberfan took place whilst I was there, and I was in charge of a squad of airmen helping to rescue the injured. It was a very sad and dreadful sight. My final posting was to R.A.F. Syston. Whilst there, I was awarded my second Long Service Medal and Commendation and we were given the freedom of the City of Newark. I also had the pleasure of being bodyguard for HRH Princess Margaret and had tea with the Duchess of Gloucester. I was demobbed in 1969 and then had a variety of jobs, managing Key Markets supermarkets and a warehouse manager in a leather factory. I had been married for 60 years and then, sadly, I lost my wife and daughter within a few weeks of each other. I packed up and went to stay with my daughter Susan and her husband in Germany. In 2001, I moved here to Kirkliston. I think it is the best village there is. My sport was cricket and I was a professional umpire for 45 years. Now I play carpet bowls at the Leisure Centre and Community Centre. I attend the Library Group and enjoy lunch at the Church Centre in Kirkliston. The South Queensferry Rotary Club has welcomed me as a member and I thoroughly enjoy the friendships I have made. My main hobby is the weather. I have been charting the weather since 1954 and over the years this has become a lot more advanced. My other hobby is also cruising with Saga Holidays. I go every year and am looking forward to a visit to the U.S.A., Canada and Greenland in September. I love being a member of The Queensferry Churches Care in the Community. Letter from Kirkliston member May Scott Member profile Sydney Sumner (Part 2) As a fairly new member of the Thursday Club, I never cease to wonder at the planning that must go on behind the scenes. There is constant variety e.g. a trip to Deep Sea World, afternoon tea at the Rail Bridge, lunch at Rouken Glen, a visit the The Haven followed by a delightful drive through the grounds of Dalmeny House to see the glorious rhododendrons. Everything is planned for our delight and pleasure. When we visited The Haven we were greeted with a warm Welcome. I laughed and said Enemy Territory? However, we were greeted not by bows and arrows, but by fish and chips, strawberries and cream! I cannot praise sufficiently the efficient running of the Club, the hard work of staff and the dedicated service of the volunteers. A word of thanks also to David Pomfret for his excellent meals, and to the coach drivers. Thank you all. I am so glad I joined the Club. Long may it flourish. It deserves all the support it can get. HBOS have intimated that they may donate the sum of 500 to our Golf Event held in May. This donation will be due to the hard work of Mr Tony Black, a member of the Rotary Club of South Queensferry. This would be classed as a matching grant that carries a maximum of Good luck Tony. etwork Rail have paid a matching grant of just over in respect of the sponsorship money Stewart Keating raised for his abseil of the Forth Bridge. Thanks to etwork Rail.

Front row Liz McIntosh, Queensferry Care General Manager and Alex Porteous Sportsman Events. The other member of the Sportsman Events committee David M cguiness was not available for this photograph. Alex Porteous of Queensferry Sportsman Events presents a cheque for the magnificent sum of 5000 to Liz McIntosh. Sportsman Events held a Brunch in March in the marquee at Dundas Castle with 199 guests attending the event and over raised for local charities, organisations and support for individuals in the community. The use of the marquee was made possible by the generosity of Sir Jack Stewart Clark. Apart from Queensferry Care Alex presented cheques to Dundas Parks Golf Club, Greenferry and Paul Appleby from Queensferry who is ranked 6th in the United Kingdom as a featherweight and works full time to help finance his boxing career. Orocco Pier Angela Hamilton, Brand Manager at the Orocco Pier presents a cheque for 1000 following a successful auction and raffle at their Masquerade Ball held earlier in the year. Day Care member Jeannie Roan and Liz McIntosh are pictured with Angela receiving the cheque on behalf of the charity. Well done and many thanks to all at Orocco Pier for their very generous donation towards our work.

5 Queensferry Care Finance Plays an Important Role Page 5 The title of this year s Annual Report is Caring Matters and that is, quite rightly, the focus of Queensferry Care. However, the lifeblood of the organisation is finance so, with the financial year just ended, it is timely to remind ourselves where our money comes from and how it is spent. The following table shows this clearly for the year ended 31 March Income Expenditure Grants from Funders 189,700 Salaries 133,300 Donations & Fundraising 23,000 Offices and Premises 34,800 Day Care Subscriptions 18,200 Daycare Supplies & Bus 21,800 Bank Interest 3,100 Volunteers and Carers 7,000 Administration etc 14, , ,500 Grants from Social Work and Lothian Primary HCT provide the lion s share of income but our own fundraising activities and subscriptions also make an important contribution. Inevitably, our main expenditure is on the salaries of our management and staff. Rent, insurance, heat, light, maintenance, day care supplies and transport and administration make up the remaining expenditure. This year we had a surplus due mainly to good work on fundraising and some very generous donations and in addition tight control of expenditures by Liz McIntosh, ably supported by Ross King and the management team. However, our Finance Director, David Batty emphasises that with little prospect of increases in funding from our main funders in the next few years and with inevitable pressure on costs there is no room for complacency and continuing vigilance in the control of costs will be essential. In this regard we are well served by our administrator, Ross King, who has found his feet over the past twelve months in understanding the finances. Can you spare a little time helping Queensferry Care as a Volunteer? Volunteers are required to assist in Day Care at The Haven on a Tuesday and on a Wednesday in Kirkliston Community Centre. We also require collectors for our can collections at Tesco and Scotmid at the end of the year. Do you know of an older person who would benefit from the Befriender Service? For more information contact Lorna at The Haven or visit the web page. Diary Dates: Coffee Morning with Teddy in Queensferry Parish Church Hall on Saturday 29th September 10am 12noon. Tickets from Haven or at the door. 1 adults and children free Virgin Vie Party in Kirkliston Church Centre on 3rd October. Tickets will be available shortly from The Haven.
