2 Welcome to the West Somerset Family Activity Calendar Summer 2018 Here you can find lots of FREE* activities for families and young people running during the summer holidays in West Somerset and the surrounding areas. *Unless price is stated Home Start West Somerset works with and alongside families with young children who are experiencing problems which affect their well-being as a family. We offer regular support, friendship, and practical help to families in their own homes. Bump-Start is a programme supporting families right through pregnancy, the birth experience and the first year of their baby s life, the programme aims to empower young families to give their child the best possible start in life. Jump-Start is a friendly and informal parent-lead support group who meet once a month. Here you can meet with other families of children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. Our monthly meetings give parent a chance to share information gain practical and emotional support. School-Start recognises the importance of family background and home environment on a child s readiness for school and learning. We help prepare parents/carers and their children to engage with their children's learning. Story-Start are small informal groups supporting parents and their young children to play, communicate and interact together using a book club Parents meet regularly, resources are provided, and fun time is encouraged.

Anyone who has questions about the grant programme should contact SCC s Youth & Community Service. youthservice@somerset.gov.uk Stay in the shade Create a shady area/den in the garden using an old sheet or blanket, chairs and some pegs for young children/babies to play in whilst outside Stay Hydrated Make sure you and your children drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent de-hydration Cover Up Make sure children wear a hat that covers their head and neck and a top that covers their shoulders as these areas are most likely to burn Apply Suncream Buy a suncream that has a SPF of at least 15 and protects against UVA & UVB rays Re regularly throughout the day, especially after your child has been swimming or playing in water and don t forget to put it on their ears and neck too! Don t Leave Anyone in the Car The inside of the car can heat up pretty quickly even with the windows partially open so it s best to avoid leaving anyone in there, even if it is just for a short amount of time
