2 1. Welcome, apologies and Introductions, David Smythe DS welcomed everyone to the meeting of the Perthshire Tourism Partnership (PTP) and round table introductions were made. DS stated Perthshire had seven winners at the regional VisitScotland Scottish Thistle Awards which was welcome news. DS noted news on the European Capital of Culture withdrawal had been disappointing for Dundee and neighbouring areas such as Perthshire. Other positives highlighted were Enchanted Forest visitor numbers were record breaking due to the increased week extending the season. 2. Overview Fonab Castle Hotel & Spa, Janette Napier, Head of Sales, Fonab Castle Hotel & Spa Fonab Castle Hotel & Spa was previously the holiday home of the Sandeman family and used during WW1. Now under the ownership of Jed & Joanne Clark who bought the property in Investment has been extensive into the 42 bedroomed luxury property, with ongoing investment. The 8 lochside rooms were launched in June 2017, each having 15,000 invested per room. Other investments in the property are the spa & swimming pool which were launched two years ago. These facilities are popular with residents and the day visitor market. The visitor market at Fonab is diverse with multiple income streams. The international visitor market has seen an uplift from the US/Canadian market. The wedding market is also high with exclusive use of the whole venue now an option. For the incentive market Fonab collaborate with outdoor providers such as Nae Limits. The local market is now using the function suite(s) for family occasions. Sandeman Restaurant has 3 AA rosettes and is aiming for a 4 th. A shuttle bus runs between Pitlochry and Fonab to allow visitors to dine there. 3. Dundee Waterfront, Gaynor Sullivan, Business Development Project Officer Dundee Waterfront is the 3 rd largest regeneration project in the UK. 1 billion has been investment across 240 hectares and the projected job creation is 7000+jobs. This is a 30 year plan. Dundee City Council aim to reconnect the water with the city utilising a grid pattern for development. This enables visitors to view the river wherever they are and connects the city centre with the waterfront. Dundee City Council own all of the development land. Areas for development are Riverside, Seabraes, City Quay, Dundee Port and Central waterfront presenting 155,842 sqm of a development
3 opportunity comprising a mix of commercial, residential, retail, hotel and other opportunities. V&A Museum of Design opens 2 nd half of 2018 Hotel investment is extensive with 500 new rooms coming on stream for 2017/18. This demand has been informed by the annual hotel demand study. New additions include Sleeperz at new train station, Indigo and Hampton by Hilton. Sites 6 & 12 are identified as potential new hotel sites also. Dundee City Council are working with transport providers on stronger transport links - new coach bays identified & completed - capacity building on Abellio Scotrail operated east coast mainline, stats show 95% capacity on west coast whilst only 5% capacity on east coast - route development with HIAL to build capacity at airport V&A Museum of Design Dundee Update Tara Wainwright, Marketing & Audiences Director, V&A V&A Museum of Design Dundee is the only V&A museum anywhere in the world outside London. The museum will be dedicated to telling the narrative of Scottish design heritage and acting as an international centre of design. The 80.11m project is part of the 1bn Dundee Waterfront regeneration. V&A Dundee is the first building in the UK designed by Kengo Kuma, the architect responsible for designing the Tokyo 2020 Olympic stadium. His design was inspired by the cliffs of the east coast. His vision is for the museum is to be a new living room for the city, welcoming everyone to visit and reconnect with the waterfront. V&A Dundee is in a close partnership with the V&A London, accessing its collections, and exhibitions. It is however run independently with its own Director and will develop its own exhibitions as well as curate touring exhibitions of global significance. V&A have a segmentation exercise underway to determine how best to reach their audiences within a 60 minute drive time and further afield. They are keen to ensure the venue is family friendly. The product offer is comprised of a series of audience drivers - star draws include as above and destination restaurant - a welcoming visitor experience, Living Room for the City ethos, a space for everyone, an extension of home, a third space - tailored products including Friday Lates, Sleepovers, pop-up events - special interest experiences
4 Action. Sign up to Tourism Newsletter: 4. Tay Cities Deal Update, Alan Graham, Business Development Manager, Perth & Kinross Council Tay Cities Deal is a long term vision with a regional economic strategy from , inclusive growth is central to it. Tay Cities Deal is a 10 year action plan from Fifty project proposals were submitted to Scottish and UK Governments. These outline a set of asks of Government as well as offers to Government. Of the fifty strategic outline cases ten are tourism projects. The investment is worth 1.83 billion with an ask of Government to fund 613 million. The aim is to develop a world class tourism offer; tourism is a driver however needs to address key challenges (seasonality and underperformance). A key offer submitted is to collaborate on regional destination development of the tay cities region The 4 neighbouring authorities (Angus, Dundee, Fife and Perthshire) are working on this via a regional partnership which to date has been informal, however is working towards a more formalised arrangement. City Deals to date have received considerably less funding than their ask. Decisions rest with central government Announcement on BID expected 2018 when heads of terms will be set. 5. Pitlochry Festival Theatre 2021, Colin Liddell, Chairperson Colin Liddell chairperson for 6 years. PFT a rural theatre who produce all their own work. 60 full-time staff, going up to 200 in summer with 50 volunteers Economic impact study demonstrated PFT worth $14-18m to local economy. ROI every 1 spent brings back 20 to economy. Current constraints are there has been no growth in audiences, no 2 nd performance space, no flight tower and an ageing staff (with technicians all 50+). These constraints led to Vision 2021 which sets out vision for PFT as a major cultural rural asset. The project addresses these constraints and would see PFT remain open during a phased approach to construction. Vision 2021 will commence as soon as Tay Cities Deal announcement made. 6. Round table update & AOB PKC - New Digital Tourism Scotland programme has been developed with 4 workshops running across Perthshire. Further information VisitScotland - VisitScotland will continue to manage a smaller estate of 26 manned centres in key high-profile locations. Our estate will reduce from 66 to 26 over a twoyear period. The remaining icentres will operate as regional travel hubs and benefit from greater investment and a wider
5 geographical remit. Perth and Pitlochry will be the two regional hubs in Perthshire, and this will mean that Aberfeldy will not be open for the 2018 season and Dunkeld and Blairgowrie will continue to operate in 2018 but will cease trading before the start of the 2019 season. As part of this information strategy, alternative information provision is already in place and we are working with the industry to continually improve this provision through time. The Perthshire area has 111 businesses with VisitScotland Information Partner status and there will be enhanced outreach activity throughout the season with the Coo Van engaging with visitors at events across the region. VisitScotland.com is a mobile friendly site and has 20 million sessions each year, and Perthshire area business listings had more than 123,000 referrals in 16/17. BEPTA Cateran Tartan, Scenic Snow Road Route Signage project underway, rebrand from East Perthshire to Cateran Country, Application to VS Growth Fund, VS closing the icentre, but the Tourism Association plan to operate it.
