9 Tourism - its impact on the economy According to the "German Travel Monitor", in 1997 the total turnover generated for overnight leisure trips taken by Germans amounted to 158 billion DM, including about 72 billion DM related to outbound travel. The revenue increase of 3 % was mainly due to the outbound trips of the Germans. The German tourism industry contributes with about 6 % to the GNP and creates approximately 2 million jobs. This figure represents about 7 % of the working population in Germany. German travel agents and tour operators employ about 65, people, of which ca. 8,25 are in training. The changing of the professional outline will result in an further increase in the next years. German expenditure abroad is also the highest compared to all other markets and 4.2 % of Germany s total private consumption is spent on international travel.
