2 Thursday 15 March Saturday 24 March 2018 Young at heart South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture s Arts Development team invite you to celebrate the 13th annual Young at Heart festival! Especially aimed at the 50+ age group, the Young at Heart festival aims to celebrate the arts as engaging and accessible for all and this 13th year sees the return of many of our most popular events. On top of a fabulous array of shows in cultural venues throughout the area, there will as always be the popular Free Recitals at 2, tea dances, afternoon performances and much more. There will also be stimulating exhibitions and an exciting range of participatory sessions giving you the chance to have a go at a dancing, crafts or textiles workshop. If you are interested in the arts then this festival is for you, and we are confident that you ll find something in this unique programme which appeals! Places are limited for most events so advance booking is advisable!

4 Evening performances Young at Heart Ceilidh Back by popular demand! Rutherglen Town Hall Saturday 17 March 2018 / 7.30pm The ever popular Clyde Valley Ceilidh Band return to Rutherglen Town Hall for another lively Ceilidh dance. Four great musicians, all the weel kent dances and some you may not have tried before, in the wonderful setting of our Grand Hall. Come and birl the light fantastic and get yourself in the mood! Don t worry if you don t know or can t remember the dances, the band will take you through all the steps. Includes buffet of soup, steak pie, tea and coffee vegetarian option also available. This is without a doubt one of the Town Hall s most popular shows so book early to avoid disappointment! Young at heart

5 Evening performances The New Jersey Boys The Music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons Rutherglen Town Hall Thursday 22 March 2018 / 7.30pm / (concession) Making a long awaited return to Rutherglen Town Hall, The New Jersey Boys take their audience on a musical journey through the career of one of the biggest selling groups of all time Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. The packed two set programme includes all the hits such as Sherry, Big Girls Don t Cry, Walk Like a Man and much more. Featuring the amazing falsetto voice of Einar Vestman and the humour of all round entertainer Gary Gould, the show is a fusion of tight vocal harmonies, superb solo spots and light comedy. an arts festival for 50+

6 Evening performances Spirit of Bad Company and Free Village Theatre East Kilbride Saturday 17 March 2018 / 8pm Free Again, a five piece ensemble of musicians, will perform their spectacular new show that gives you a concert experience of 100 minutes of pure Bad Company and Free nostalgia. This is not a heavy rock night by any stretch, the music is more than that much more. It s a delicate blend of vocals, guitars and piano punctuated by a dynamic rhythm section to produce timeless, melodic classics. This concert promises to be a fantastic night to remember for all Free and Bad Company fans, young and old, new or long-standing. Expect a set that includes classic tracks ranging from Feel Like Makin Love to Wishing Well; All Right Now to Can t Get Enough. You will also hear an acoustic section with beautiful piano melodies and vocal harmony. The back catalogue is exceptional, appealing to audiences of every age, evoking memories and touching the hearts and souls of each new generation. Young at heart

7 Evening performances The Homelanders Village Theatre East Kilbride Saturday 24 March 2018 / 7.30pm / 8.00 concession The huge gap in the traditional Scottish Music scene left by the Alexander Bros has never been more adequately filled than by Paul Philps and John Morgan The Homelanders The Scots/Irish Duo Have Toured New Zealand, Australia, and Ireland to great success bringing the house full signs out of the storage closets. Time and time again. John is one of the world s leading Accordionists and has been voted one of the six best players in the UK by the Countries Prestigious Fiddle and Accordion Clubs. Paul, who was born in Northern Ireland carries most of the main vocals as well as being a well established comedian, this creates the mix which gives the show its magic and unique appeal. an arts festival for 50+

8 Evening performances Be Bop a Lula Lanark Memorial Hall Thursday 15 March 2018 / 7.30pm / concession The West End smash hit comes to town starring five giants of rock n roll Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, Billy Fury, Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison. In 1960 American rockers Eddie and Gene flew in from the States and were joined by British heartthrob Billy Fury for the UK s very first multi-artist rock n roll tour. Reviewers were appalled by the on stage antics. Audiences screamed their approval. British youth culture was born. Relive these seminal concerts in the company of incredible singers and a band tighter than a pair of your tightest drainpipe trousers. 12 Afternoon performances Open Mike Written by Chris Martin Directed by Tobias Erdmann Producer Asib Akram East Kilbride Arts Centre Saturday 24 March 2018 / 1.00pm 2.00pm 2.15pm 3.15pm 3.30pm 4.30pm 4.45pm 5.45pm Free This BAFTA nominated short film explores the life of Michael, an adult with autism. He adheres to a strict routine, which involves the local pub, but being in the wrong place at the wrong time leads to disruption. After the film, participants will have the opportunity to speak to the writer-actor Chris Martin. Young at heart

13 Events Funding Fair Fernhill Community Centre Thursday 22 March 2018 / 1pm 4pm Free Looking for funding can be a major task for voluntary organisations and community groups. Often, there is a range of funders who can fund your project but the problem is knowing who to apply to, how to apply and finding the time! Hopefully, the South Lanarkshire Funding Fair will help you find your way through the funding maze by providing direct access to potential funders so that you can meet and talk with them about the kinds of projects they might support. The South Lanarkshire Funding Fair brings together representatives from various funding avenues to talk about their funding and support schemes. 14 Free recitals Free Recitals at 2 Live Music Now Founded by violinist Yehudi Menuhin, Live Music Now offers opportunities for emerging professional musicians, in a wide variety of genres, to perform for audiences who would not normally have access to high quality live music such as those in special schools, care homes, day centres, hospices and prisons. Since the scheme was founded 35 years ago, the charity has brought pleasure and inspiration to hundreds of thousands of people at the same time as providing vital support and experience for some of the best of this country s young musicians. For this year s Young At Heart festival, we are again bringing you another four fabulous performances which will entertain you through a series of short recitals at 2pm. Tickets are free but should be booked in advance via venue box offices. Young at heart

15 Free recitals Ryan Young and Seán Gray (Scottish traditional fiddle and guitar duo) Lanark Memorial Hall Friday 16 March 2018 / 2pm Ryan Young is an emerging young fiddle player from Scotland one of a new wave of young players bringing fresh and inventive ideas to traditional Scottish music. Ryan s fiddle playing is brimming with fresh melodic ideas, an uplifting rhythmic drive and a great depth of dynamics and precision. Ryan s sound is very distinctive and he always manages to take the listener on an adventurous and emotional journey in any performance. Ryan studied and graduated with a first class honours degree in Scottish Music from The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and was awarded the Arthur Robertson prize for Scots fiddle playing. He has now also an arts festival for 50+ completed a Masters in Music, being awarded the highest possible mark for his final performance. Seán Gray is a guitarist and singer from Coylton in Ayrshire. Since spending a year at the prestigious National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music he has played to audiences throughout North America and Europe. Most of this time has been spent playing with the award winning Paul McKenna Band who were cited by The New York Times as: The best folk band to have come out of Scotland in the last twenty years. Ryan and Seán have been performing together as members of Live Music Now Scotland since early 2017.

16 Free recitals The Dohnányi String Trio (classical violin, viola and cello trio) Town House Hamilton Monday 19 March 2018 / 2pm The Dohnányi String Trio is a new exciting ensemble formed in early 2016 committed to exploring the repertoire of this genre, expanding music for this genre and being part of artistic collaborations. In the summer of 2016 The Dohnányi String Trio was invited to join the Aberdeen International Music Festival, where they participated in a series of masterclasses with members of the Hebrides Ensemble and performed at the festival. The Trio have participated in masterclasses with Duncan Ferguson, Christopher George and Will Conway, and in 2017 became Live Music Now Scotland artists. Young at heart

17 Free recitals Marco Ramelli (solo classical guitar) Rutherglen Town Hall Wednesday 21 March 2018 / 2pm Born in Milan (Italy), Marco graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with a Masters Degree of Performance (APEL) with Distinction. Previously, he studied at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatoire of Music in Milan, and then his postgraduate diploma (magna com laude) at the Luca Marenzio Conservatoire of Music in Darfo Boario Terme, also in Italy. Marco is currently a doctorate student at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where his research is focused on contemporary music for guitar and on new commissions written for his doctoral project. an arts festival for 50+ During his performing career he has won first prize at various guitar competitions all over Europe, including the inaugural Scottish International Guitar Competition. Marco regularly performs in Italy, Spain, Turkey and in the UK, and recently made his USA debut in Los Angeles. His concert career also includes performances at several international music festivals. He is also a composer, recording artist, teacher, and commissioner of new works. He is Artistic Director of the Festival Corde d Autunno in Milan in collaboration with the Sistema Italia.

18 Free recitals Hannah Rarity and Luc McNally (Scottish traditional voice and guitar duo) East Kilbride Arts Centre Thursday 22 March 2018 / 2pm Hannah Rarity and Luc McNally are a song and guitar duo hailing from West Lothian and County Durham respectively. The pair met whilst studying music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and collaborated on various projects during their time there. Their repertoire consists of Scottish, Irish, English and American songs and tunes; some old, some new, and appealing to a broad range of audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Hannah tours worldwide with the renowned international Irish trad. group Cherish the Ladies and has studied and taught traditional and contemporary song in both Ireland and Scotland. She has recently released her debut EP, which features some of Scotland s finest young instrumentalists. Luc performs with Scottish folk fusion bands Dosca and Sketch, in a pipes and Northumbrian song duo Eddie and Luc, and in a new contemporary/traditional string trio Snuffbox. Young at heart

We are delighted to welcome John back, to a mix of South Lanarkshire venues, for this year s festival. Free tea and biscuits provided. an arts festival for 50+

20 Exhibitions A Visual Diary East Kilbride Arts Centre Gallery Thursday 8 March Sunday 1 April am 8pm Free admission Susan McMillan trained in Glasgow, graduating with a degree in Contemporary Art Practice in Since her degree she has contributed in a number of collaborative exhibitions whilst also exhibiting on her own in local areas of interest. Her work has been varied but since qualifying she has concentrated more on her painting. Sketches and photographic images are her main starting point however she believes that her aim is not to replicate but to bring a more painterly and imaginative feel to her work. Susan works mainly in acrylics, mixed media and watercolour. Her current exhibition will showcase some of her newer works which are much more impressionistic as well as retrospective works. 21 Exhibitions Colour and Line Exhibition Hall, Rutherglen Town Hall Saturday 24 March to Saturday 7 April 2018 Open Monday to Saturday 9am to 4pm Free admission Works of art produced by the participants who attend the SLLC Arts Development Drawing and Painting classes throughout South Lanarkshire. Weekly classes are delivered during term times during the day and in the evenings in our cultural venues in Lanark, Hamilton, Rutherglen and East Kilbride. 22 Workshops Circle Dancing Whitehill Neighbourhood Centre 21 March 2018 / 10am 11am; 11am 12pm 4.80 What is Circle Dancing? Circle Dancing is a collection of dances and music danced in a circle from around the world including the Balkans, Greece, Israel, Russia and France. Circle dances can be energetic and lively or gentle and reflective. Each dance will be taught by dance artist Jo Freeman, there is no audience, and everyone no matter what age or ability, is welcome to join in. So come on your own or bring a friend (you don t have to have a partner) and take part in one or both of our circle dance taster workshops and discover how much fun this kind of dancing is. 25 Workshops Young at Heart Dance Classes East Kilbride Arts Centre Monday 19 March 2018 / 11am 12noon 4.80 Dance is a great way to exercise at any age but as we get older it s very important to keep active and mobile, which is what the Young at Heart dance class helps to do. We deliver weekly classes offering tuition in various dance styles and levels of experience. They are created with the aim to improve your fitness, balance, flexibility and co-ordination and will also provide a fantastic work out for the brain. Come along and take the class at your own pace: stretch, step, glide and salsa your way to a fitter you. 30 Box office terms and conditions Cancellations In the event of a performance being cancelled, South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture Limited will take reasonable steps to notify ticket holders. However, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to notify ticket holders prior to the event date. In the event of a performance being cancelled, South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture Limited will not be held responsible for any travel, accommodation or other ancillary costs incurred by the ticket holder. Charges for carers / escorts All carers / escorts will be required to purchase a valid ticket for any performance. This will be charged at concession rate where available. Children / infants A ticket must be purchased for any child who is aged 1 or over. For babies who are under the age of 1 (on the date of the performance being attended), a Babes in Arms ticket will be issued, free of charge, which will allow entry to the auditorium. A reserved seat will not be allocated with this ticket. In the event of a sell out performance, Babes in Arms tickets may be limited and entry refused to the auditorium. At performances which are specifically aimed at those under the age of 1, Babes in Arms tickets will not be available. No one under the age of 16 will be admitted to a performance without being accompanied by a parent, responsible adult (who must be aged 18 or over) or legal guardian. Concessions The following groups are eligible for concessionary ticket prices: Holders of South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture Leisure For All concession cards. Other concessions may be available please see venue for details. Please note that concessions may not be available for all performances. To qualify for any advertised group discount, the applicable tickets must be purchased for a single performance of a production. Latecomers Latecomers may not be admitted until a suitable break in the performance. This may be the interval. Lost / stolen tickets South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture Limited will not be held responsible for lost or stolen tickets. Management rules A valid ticket is required to enter the auditorium and at some locations to enter the bar area. South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture Limited reserves the right to refuse admission to the auditorium or to request that any ticket holder leave the auditorium and may take appropriate action to enforce this right. South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture Limited will not be held responsible for any personal property brought into the venue. Ticket holders agree to abide by the Venue Management Rules and Fire and Evacuation procedures at all times. These are available to customers on request and/or are displayed within the venue.

31 Photography / recording The unauthorised use of photographic and/or recording equipment (audio, video or live streaming) is strictly prohibited and failure to comply will result in removal from the auditorium. Filming and recording of performances On occasion filming and recording may be carried out at the venue, by attending an event you give your express consent to be included in such films and recordings and for these to be exploited in any and all media at any time throughout the world. This includes any filming by police or security staff which may be carried out for the security of our patrons. Postage of tickets Tickets purchased by telephone or online, within 7 working days of the date of the performance, will be held at the venue for collection at the box office rather than being posted out. A fixed postage fee of 1 will apply and be charged to the customer if tickets are posted. Alterations to programme South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture Limited reserves the right to make alterations to the advertised programme at short notice (for example cast changes). In these instances South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture Limited is not obliged to refund the ticket nor exchange the ticket for another performance. Refunds / exchanges Tickets, once purchased, cannot be refunded except in circumstances where the performance has been cancelled. Tickets must be returned to the point of purchase before a refund can be given. Ticket exchanges may be possible, subject to availability. In the event of seating problems or other operational issues, South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture Limited reserves the right to move customers from allocated seating to alternative seating without notice. In these instances South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture Limited will not refund any difference in the customer s ticket price nor exchange the customer s ticket for another performance. Resales The re-selling of tickets that have already been purchased will only be conducted by South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture Limited at the Venue Manager s discretion. Reservations Tickets that have been reserved must be paid for within three days of purchase or within a timescale specifically advised by sales staff, otherwise, tickets which have been reserved and not paid for may be released for general sale without notice. Special access requirements Customers must inform the box office, at the time of booking, of any ticket holders who require special access to the venue. (For example: wheelchair users, those who cannot use stairs etc) Failure to do so may result in admission to the auditorium being denied on the day of the performance if we are unable to offer suitable seating that complies with our Fire and Evacuation procedures.
