2 Welcome 6 th WKF Youth Training Camp Dear participant, After the five first successful editions, we face in 2013 the 6 th edition of the WKF Youth Camp and World Cup. This year we continue with the children categories added in 2012; the WKF Youth Cup will take place in parallel. Again in the beautiful island of Corfu, where the participants are going to find the ideal conditions to fulfil the objective of the Camp; what it is like to train with top world champions in a friendly and cosmopolitan atmosphere whilst getting in touch for a whole week with the state of the art sport of Karate. Corfu has already hosted two times the organization of the WKF Youth Camp & Cup, which assures this 6 th edition to be a complete success. Finally, I would like to thank the Hellenic Karate Federation and the local authorities for their help and support and I am looking forward to welcoming you all personally. 3 Corfu Island Pontikonisi and Vlacheraina monastery seen from the hilltops of Kanoni Corfu, the island of endless natural beauty, the island of song and music, of unending inspiration, a combination of the cosmopolitan and the traditional. How can we put in few words all the elements which make up this earthly paradise, this place which has been so generously blessed by God and which has been written about by so many illustrious writers and poets. The island takes its name from the nymph Corkira, daughter of the river Assopos with whom Poseidon fell in love and kidnapped, taking her to Corfu. Their union produced Faikas, the first King of the island. The foreign name Corfu came from the new town that was created in the old fortress on the twin peaks, meaning the town on the peaks. Its area covers 592 square kilometers. Corfu was not given the name of the Emerald Island for no reason. The greenest of all the Greek islands, Corfu's natural beauty is hidden under a cloak of emerald green, with a mountainous skyline plunging into the bluest of blue waters. 3

4 There is an abundance of sand, shingle and pebble beaches lining the 200 km coastline, leading to clear waters ideal for swimming and water sports. The island has something to offer everyone. Corfu Town itself is a contrasting combination of old and new existing side by side in perfect harmony. The city of Corfu stands on the broad part of a peninsula, whose termination in the Venetian citadel is cut off from it by an artificial fosse formed in a natural gully, with a seawater moat at the bottom, that now serves as a marina and is called the Contrafossa. The old town, having grown within fortifications is a labyrinth of narrow streets paved with cobblestones, sometimes tortuous but colorful and clean which are known as kantoúnia. A promenade rises by the seashore towards the bay of Garitsa together with an esplanade between the city and the citadel known as Spianada with the Liston to its west side, where restaurants and bistros abound. 4

5 Take a little time to explore the island and you will be rewarded with some of the most spectacular scenery on offer by any destination. A trip into the heart of the island will give you an insight into Corfiot village life. Time, in stood still and everyday life carries on some places, seems to have pretty much as it must have done for hundreds of years. Elegant architecture, sun blessed beaches, enchanting nightlife and fine cuisine all play their part in attracting visitors from all over the world. With a welcome as warm as the sun, the renowned reputation the Greeks possess for their unique and instinctive hospitality makes any visitor feel more than at home. Even though the island is constantly developing to cater to the demands of today's tourist, Corfu has still managed to retain its beauty and charm throughout time. The majority of the island remains untouched and as captivating as it has been for centuries. Whether you are looking for the hustle and bustle of nightlife or peace and tranquility, everything you could need is here, just waiting to be discovered. More information on Corfu island: The Sport Hall The competition will take place at the National Indoor Corfu Sport Hall. It has a capacity of 800 spectators, while there is an additional training room beside the main stadium for the training of athletes before competitions. 7 On-Line Registration Registration to the Youth Training Camp / Youth World Cup must be done o n l y through your WKF National Federation Member. The WKF National Federations will o n l y use the WKF On-Line Registration for this purpose ( Registration must be done at least 15 days before the Youth Training Camp. After that deadline (17 th June 2013) the On-Line Registration will close and a penalty to all further registrations may be applied according to the WKF Rules. Making o n l y a hotel room reservation, even through the official travel agent, d o e s n o t m e a n that the person is accepted to participate in the Youth Training Camp unless the person has been registered via the WKF On-Line Registration by his/ her National Karate Federation. The Training Camp Participating ages: 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 years old. Participants to the Camp must be born between 2 nd July 1995 and 1 st July Younger and/or older participants will not be allowed. 8

9 Attention It is an obligatory for all the participants, their accompanying persons and trainers to stay at the official hotel. Otherwise, the participation fees concerning all the activities of the Camp (youth training camp & coach activities) will be double in order to cover the organizational expenses. The young participants will pay 60 (euros), during the official registration (Dassia Chandris Hotel / 10:00-18:00, Monday July 1 st 2013) as participation fees for the 6 th WKF Youth Training Camp. Participation to the Children Competition & the Karate1 Youth World Cup will be free of charge (meaning that there are no entry fees) for the participants of the 6 th WKF Youth Training Camp and o n l y for them provided that they will be present to all training sessions. Participation to the Children Competition & the Karate1 Youth World Cup is limited to holders of valid WKF ID cards. Validity of WKF ID cards will be verified during the official registration sessions (Thursday & Friday). The WKF ID card can be purchased at the official registration sessions. The On-Line Registration deadline for the 6 th June 17 th WKF Youth Training Camp is Due to the limited number of places available the rule of first come first serve will be applied; and the organization reserves the right not to accept any more applicants once the limit is reached. All participants must bring with them the appropriate protective items (as per WKF rules), karate-gi and running shoes. 9

11 The Youth World Cup Every athlete will have to register and attend the y o u t h s e m i n a r (training sessions) in order to be eligible to participate without extra charge in the Karate1 Youth World Cup. 14 ANNEX I WKF Coach Activities Corfu 2013 Welcome to the WKF coach license program for Corfu The coaches program is proving to be a great success, after the first year of its implementation we already have over 500 registered coaches. This program is proving its capacity to standardize the coaches function and thereby make our competitions safer, further enforcing the anti doping rules as well as enhancing disciplined and courteous behavior overall. This year coaches will be able to access both coach levels, either the WKF Accredited Coach or the WKF Certified Kata and/or Kumite Coach. Mr. Primoz Debenak, WKF Referee Commission Member, will conduct the Coaches Seminar and the subsequent WKF Accredited Coach Briefing and WKF Certified Kumite & Kata Coach Exams. Those coaches who wish to attend the Accredited Coach Briefing in Corfu must fill out the registration form and agreement enclosed in the bulletin as well as register online for the event ( The documentation must be sent to the following addresses: wkf.assistant@wkf.com.es and aaust186@bigpond.net.au no later than May 17 th. Those Accredited Coaches who wish to take the Certified Kumite and/or Kata Coach Exam in Corfu do not have to sign the agreement again, they need to send the registration form included in the bulletin and register online by May 17 th by their National Federation. Please notice that only coaches in possession of the WKF Accredited Coach level have access to the WKF Certified Kumite and/or Kata Coach Exams. Please notice that it is not possible to take part in both the WKF Accredited Coach Briefing and the WKF Certified Kumite and/or Kata Coach Exams. The WKF must receive the corresponding payments by bank transfer to the account indicated in the registration form (including all bank transfer charges). In order to ease the process all the payments must come from the National Federations, not individual coaches. All bank transfers must be received at the WKF bank account no later than May 31 st. Finally, the Accredited Coach diplomas will be handed out in Corfu, each individual is responsible for picking up their diploma and those coaches who do not do so will be charged with the shipping costs incurred by sending their diploma to their National Federations. The Certified Kata and Kumite Coach diplomas will be sent by regular mail via the National Federations to those coaches who pass the exam. Please remember that all participants accredited in a WKF event need to be in possession of an annual WKF ID card (a valid one). If they do not have one or their card has expired, they must apply during the registration of the event. Also, do note that all coaches must use the official travel agent for their accommodation arrangements during the event.
