1. Geographical and demographic data A unique setting Lloret de Mar is situated in an outstanding geographical setting: the Costa Brava, an area that has long been renowned for its natural beauty in the form of a rich coastal and mountain landscape. Lloret is situated close to the cities of Barcelona, Girona and Perpignan, with their transport infrastructures and tourist attractions. Excellent transport connections The airports of Barcelona, Girona or Perpignan are all within a convenient distance of Lloret de Mar. 5 1. Geographical and demographic data (II) Mediterranean climate all year round Furthermore, the mild and stable Mediterranean climate of Lloret de Mar means that the city can be enjoyed at any time of year, with all sorts of tourism and leisure options to explore. Since 2003 the number of hotels that open all year round (or at least from March to October) has increased thanks to the city's tourism policy, which aims to reduce the seasonal nature of tourism and to promote sports and business tourism, etc. In this respect, although it is true that visitor numbers swell in the summer months, especially in August, the occupancy level remains stable over the rest of the year, at over 70%. Moreover, in Lloret there is no need for a car due to the size of the city, the proximity of infrastructures and the pedestrianisation of certain areas. As such, almost any point of the city can be reached on foot in about eight minutes. Demographic growth With 40,000 inhabitants, Lloret de Mar has become a tourism magnet and economic development engine in recent years. It should be pointed out that in the summer seasons, this figure rises to 150,000 visitors per month. In 2012 Lloret's hotels welcomed almost one million visitors 5

2. Lloret de Mar, a model 21 st century city for tourism Committed to renovation as a strategy for maintaining its position of leadership in the tourism sector, in 2010 Lloret de Mar began the implementation of an ambitious Strategic Plan. This plan brought together a decade of work focused on joint initiatives between the public authorities and the private sector, which began in 2003 with the creation of Lloret Turisme. The Plan is currently at its halfway point and has enabled Lloret de Mar to become a competitive destination that is realising its potential in terms of territorial and tourism development. Lloret de Mar has been working for years towards opting for a Tourist Destination Restructuring Plan. These plans are projects that involve the comprehensive modernisation and restructuring of mature tourist destinations with an international profile and potential, led by the Spanish government in conjunction with the Government of Catalonia. These plans have now been reformulated andhavebecometheso-calledsmart Tourist Destination Plans. Lloret de Mar is set to become one of the pilot Smart Tourist Destinations. 6

2. Lloret de Mar, a model 21 st century city for tourism (II) Why is Lloret a model 21 st centurycityfortourism? Thanks to its optimal management of seasonality as a tourist destination that is fully capable on every level. Increasingly stringent tourism demands and the increase of the population in high season mean that Lloret must adapt as a destination to meet the needs of its visitors, which vary according to the season and month of the year. This applies to infrastructures, the provision of services (cleaning, security, healthcare, information, beaches, etc.) and the promotion of its products according to the time of year. As such, it achieves balance and stability between the intensive economic activity that takes place in the summer and the lower level of activity in winter. Because it has become a city managed around the clock Due to its vocation as a tourist destination and the fluctuation of visitor numbers, Lloret manages its services in a highly organised manner, safeguarding its strategic tourism products around the clock, for visitors and locals alike. In this respect, it devotes the necessary human and financial resources to the adaptation of structures and tools for the management and organisation of the urban environment and the city's activity as a whole. 7

2. Lloret de Mar, a model 21 st century city for tourism (III) Because of its specialisation and investments Lloret has been implementing an ongoing specialisation process and a largescale urban renovation in recent years with significant public and private investment. Over the last ten years the municipal public investment in the city has amounted to over 150 million, with an additional investment of over 100 million made by the private sector. Because it takes care of all its tourism markets Lloret remains committed to its work with consolidated markets such as Germany, the UK and Belgium, and to the promotion of and specialisation in products that go beyond sun and sand. Furthermore, it is also targeting strategic markets, such as Russian and Eastern European tourism, along with "proximity" tourism (Catalan, French and Spanish markets). 8

3. Lloret de Mar, its success: its products In this respect, the city's tourism offering is not only based on sun and sand but rather on a whole range of possibilities, embodied in THREE CORE AREAS that constitute its STAR PRODUCTS: 3.1. 10 3.1. Lloret de Mar: Urban beach Lloret de Mar has redefined itself in recent years as an urban beach tourist destination. We see urban beach as a modern and innovative concept. The different components that form part of this concept are based on a view of Lloret de Mar as a city defined by its history, inhabitants, traditions, customs, exceptional natural setting and outstanding heritage, in conjunction with a wide-ranging offering in terms of leisure, tourism and services. LLORET, A PIONEERING AND LEADING CITY IN THE URBAN BEACH CONCEPT The area and its natural resources, the population and its community activities, the quality of the services and the city's attractions, make the perfect combination. An example of this definition can be found in the beach activities programme, which includes a kids' club and bossaball, or in the long list of sports and nautical activities available on the city's beaches. In 2012 Lloret de Mar's beach activities programme was enjoyed by 28,000 people. Bossaball on the beaches of Lloret de Mar Who is Lloret de Mar's urban beach concept aimed at? Thanks to constant improvements in transport connections, Lloret de Mar can now be reached by sea, road, on foot along coastal footpaths, or by public transport in the form of special buses. Moreover, access has been facilitated through the removal of physical barriers in order to cater for the demands of people with different degrees and types of disability.
