4 THE NORTH S CAPITAL WHY INVEST IN MANCHESTER? Manchester has long been regarded as the UK s 2nd city a melting pot of business and industry mixed with an innovative art, musical and cultural scene. With an ever growing young population, the city is predicted to continue thriving economically, as the epicentre of the Northern Powerhouse. In the midst of a massive inner-city regeneration programme, Manchester is attracting more foreign investment than any other city in the UK outside of London. The UK s sporting capital is now internationally recognised and viewed by both big business and residents as a true northern metropolis. Salford Quays Manchester attracts more investment than any other UK city outside of London. In the final quarter of 2015, Chancellor George Osborne announced investment into the 730m Middlewood Locks development by a Chinese consortium; a project to build 2,000 homes on a 24 acre brownfield site in Salford, close to Spinningfields in Manchester. Continuing the trend, China s Gingko Tree Investments consortium invested in the landmark One Angel Square building, the flagship of the NOMA redevelopment project. The city saw the second highest rise in rents in the country, just behind Westminster. With a strong and increasing rental market, plus being ranked second on HSBC s Buy-to-Let Hotspots, it comes as no surprise that it is a popular market for both domestic and international investors. The closest Metrolink stop is Shudehill, which is only a two minute walk away. The rapidly expanding cross-city Metrolink service provides quick, direct access to all parts of the city and Manchester Airport. Train services run from the recently redeveloped Victoria Station, again only two minutes walk from North Central. All northern routes are serviced from this interchange, with Manchester s mainline rail services running from Piccadilly Station; a 5 minute journey on the tram, where you can connect to the regional and UK rail network, and get a train to London in just over two hours. 7 ABOUT NOMA The NOMA scheme in Manchester city centre is a groundbreaking new district that spans 20 acres and when completed will feature four million square feet of offices, homes, shops and leisure amenities. The first phase of the project was the 142m headquarters for The Co-operative Group, One Angel Square. NOMA will be built at a cost of 800m over years and is the largest redevelopment project in the North West of England. Living, breathing, evolving - NOMA is creating a mixed-use location in the centre of the city with real community at its heart. With a mix of uses and places to work, live, visit, shop, eat and be entertained, first and foremost NOMA is about people and creating a place they want to be. the new public square now open, the neighbourhood is taking on a life of its own. Major transport infrastructure investment projects also make up the redevelopment, these include: Refurbishment of Victoria Station Construction of a new viaduct connecting Manchester s Victoria, Oxford Road and Piccadilly Stations, and Salford Central Station, enabling faster, more frequent services to run across the North of England. Further expansion of the Metrolink network Establishment of a cross-city bus network which will include new stops and routes that will bring additional commuters and visitors directly to NOMA and the city centre. 8 THE NORTHERN POWERHOUSE TRANSPORT The Norther Powerhouse is a proposal to boost economic growth in the north of England by, in particular in the core cities of Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield, Newcastle and predominantly Manchester. the South East through major investment, to support growth of the city and surrounding regions. The biggest ever investment in Britain from China came with the announcement that Beijing Construction Engineering Group would invest 800 million into the Manchester Airport expansion project. The vision for the city centre until 2018 looks to build on the successes of the previous strategy, with a goal for the city centre to be a place to invest, to work, to live, to shop, to enjoy, that brings people together and a place that is easy to travel to for leisure or employment, and to get around once there. According to the strategy the vision is of Manchester as a world class city as competitive as the best international cities across the globe. The strategy looks to root Manchester s position as the main economic hub in the region, and help re-balance the economic dominance of London and 5 minutes Piccadilly 15 minutes Airport Manchester Airport is the third busiest in the UK and the busiest not serving London, as well as a major worldwide logistics hub. The city is served by three major railway stations, with Piccadilly being the busiest and a main terminus for routes to London, Birmingham, Bristol, Southampton, South Wales and Scotland as well as linking cities across the Trans Pennine corridor. The Manchester Metrolink is the largest light rail system in the UK, serving 35 million passenger journeys last year
