2 AMA1 2-Year Road Safety Campaign AMA1 is financing a 2-year Road Safety Campaign in Pemba, MDP and Palma known as Supatxenja. The project aims to empower people to take action for a sustainable change towards safe road behavior, by increasing their knowledge and awareness of safe road behavior and attitudes. 3 Global Road Safety Week 04 to 10 May 2015 The Supatxenja Campaign brought the UN Global Road Safety Week to Pemba through a series of events and activities throughout the week. The theme for this year s campaign, #SaveKidsLives, calls on the general public to sign the Child Declaration, which urges leaders around the world to include awe target LIVE to OUR halvevalues road traffic fatalities globally. 3

4 Public March through Pemba Monday 04 May 2015 To launch the Global Road Safety Week, Supatxenja organized a public march from the Pemba Municipality to the Praza dos Herois. Over 150 Supatxenja champions and focal points from all schools and communities were present to draw attention to the issue of road safety in Pemba. The march was supervised by the Transit Police who halted traffic and ensured the safe passage of the marchers. WE LIVE OUR VALUES 4

5 Road Safety Public Exhibition To showcase the issue of road safety with the general public, Supatxenja designed an interactive public exhibition that ran for the duration of the week. With help from the Supatxenja activists, the general public were personally guided around the exhibition, which included: WE LIVE OUR VALUES Information and statistics about road safety and accidents Tips and advice on how to be safe on the roads A large-scale map of Pemba highlighting key road risk zones Photo wall collage showcasing the Supatxenja Campaign Space for participants to write their own road safety messages Interactive drawing walls for children Poetry exhibit and competition for the best entries The Road Safety Exhibition was very well received and a successful means of disseminating information in a fun and interactive way. It attracted over 500 visitors, including students, children and young people, families, and government. 5

7 Road Safety Signs for High-Risk Zones The Supatxenja Campaign works with target schools and communities to discuss and map out their road safety risks. Following this, each target group is supported to develop a community Plan of Action, which includes tangible risk-reduction solutions. For example: putting up road signs, building speed bumps, establishing formal bus stops, painting road markers, selecting community road wardens, etc. WE LIVE OUR VALUES To commemorate the Global Road Safety Week, Supatxenja worked in collaboration with ANE (the National Road Authority) to design and assemble two road signs in the Mulapane neighborhood of Pemba. Road signs had been identified by Mulapane community as a means of safeguarding children who attend the local primary school and must cross the busy main road to get there. Over the coming weeks and months, Supatxenja will be implementing life-saving solutions for all 23 schools and communities where the campaign is implemented. 7

8 UN Child Declaration for Road Safety The Child Declaration is a call for action to mark UN Global Road Safety Week. The Declaration gives voice to children s thoughts and fears about travelling on the roads and outlines the measures that must be taken to keep them safe. It urges world leaders to include a target to halve road traffic fatalities globally, so that children everywhere can be kept safe. In support of the Declaration, Supatxenja helped local children to draw attention to their road safety thoughts and fears via special signboards. During the closing ceremony, these were shared with government and the media. 8

9 Closing Ceremony Saturday 09 March 2015 To commemorate the end of the Global Road Safety Week, Supatxenja organized a special closing ceremony at the Praza dos Herois in Pemba. Planned and implemented in collaboration with government partners (Municipality, INATTER, DPTC, PRM), the event was open to the public and lasted from 16h00 to 20h00. Anadarko, represented by João Correia, was invited to give a speech, together with the INATTER Provincial Delegate and the President of Pemba Municipality. Media was also invited to cover the event, which attracted over 600 people. Spectators were kept entertained by competitions, theater performances, local dance acts and music groups, whose performances were all linked in some way to the issue of Road Safety. 9

11 Petition to the Mayor of Pemba In support of the UN Child Declaration, Supatxenja collected nearly 500 signatures and messages from the general public. During the closing ceremony, these were presented to the Mayor of Pemba, with the request that he continue to promote greater road safety in Pemba city. In his closing speech, the Mayor confirmed his commitment to making Pemba s roads a safer place. 11

12 Government and Media Engagement Supatxenja s government and media partners were closely involved in the planning and implementation of the Road Safety Week. These include the Pemba Municipality, INATTER (National Institute for Land Transport), DPTC (Provincial Directorate for Transport & Communications), Transport Police, Municipality Police and ANE (National Road Authority). Representatives from two Pemba driving schools were also present during activities. Journalists from newspaper, radio and TV were also invited to cover the Road Safety Week. Representatives from Radio Mozambique and Horizonte were among those present. WE LIVE OUR VALUES 12
