1 Lunch Meeting September 25 th, 2007 With our President out of town, lunch meeting was chaired by Acting Pres PP David Ong. Our guest speaker was Mr Lee Poh Wah Programme Director from the Lien Foundation. There was a good turnout of 22 Rotarians, 2 Visiting Rotarians and 4 Guests. The camaraderie was as usual good and was especially evident when it came to Sunshine Box contributions. Of note was the friendly rivalry between VP Jaya Prakash & Dir Billy Lee who were fined for abdicating responsibility of chairing meeting & looking sartorial with sunglasses respectively. Happy wedding anniversaries wishes were also accorded to PP Vincent Chen & Dir Alfred Ong. The highlight of our lunch meeting was to listen to our guest speaker Mr Lee inform us of the projects done by the Lien Foundation which was founded by the late Rotarian & philanthropist Lien Ying Chow. It was in many ways a most refreshing talk with the Lien Foundation approaching community work both in Singapore & neighbouring countries as Radical Philanthropy versus the traditional charity approach. The audience was introduced to the stable of organisations under the Lien Foundation. One of them was the 18-month-old Lien Aid, which specifically looks out for water & sanitation projects in our neighbouring countries like Vietnam, Indonesia & China. Added emphasis was made on education for the local population to maintain and sustain the facilities created. Local projects were primarily examples of empowerment through investment in Information Technology in the various educational institutes. Overall it was a most upbeat & quirky impression of the Lien Foundation, which mirrors both the ideals of community service and continuing the humanitarian legacy of its founder. Rtn Jeffrey Chan in thanking our speaker expressed hope for co-operation between our RCRC & Lien Foundation as we share similar objectives in service to our community & surrounding communities that probably require even more assistance. Of note during meeting was the welcomed return of Rtn Nitin Doshi back to RCRC. Good to see you back at RCRC Nitin! Sunshine contribution was $93. PHOTOS OF LUNCH MEETING ON 25 SEP 2007

6 Why some countries can t go metric If the metric system did ever take over, we'd have to change our thinking to the following: * A miss is as good as 1.6 kilometers. * Put your best 0.3 of a meter forward. * Spare the 5.03 meters and spoil the child. * Twenty-eight grams of prevention is worth 453 grams of cure. * Give a man 2.5 centimeters and he'll take 1.06 kilometers. * Peter Piper picked 8.8 liters of pickled peppers. Words of Wisdom for Rotarians : Success is a journey. Not a destination. The Guide to Daily Living Adopted for use by D3310 Conferences 1999 & 2001 Promoted for use in all clubs by D3310 Conference 2005 Submitted for consideration of the COL 2007, endorsed by D3310 Conference 2005 The Guide to Daily Living Before doing the things we want to do, consider first, the precept of the Guide. Ask ourselves these 4 questions and act upon them: First Second Third Fourth Have I spent some time in self-examination? Have I spent quality time with my family? Have I given the best to my work? Have I given some time to someone near and far?
7 The first question prompts us to evaluate ourselves and our ability to serve. The second question reinforces our commitment to the family our intimate community of Life and Love The third question requests us to commit ourselves to work excellence and the practice of high ethical standards. The fourth question reminds us of our duty to Lend A Hand, rendering compassionate service and working for world peace. The Guide, in fact, encompasses the 4 parts of the Object of Rotary.
