2 Objective Providing protection for passengers from extreme weather conditions like Sun, rain, wind, splash while waiting for buses.

3 Action Plan Target : Erecting 1,000 no of bus shelters throughout the country within 2005 Budgetary allocation : Rs.20,000 per shelter

7 Action Plan Service providers - Private or public sector firms capable of - Private or public sector firms capable of constructing, letting commercial advertisement and maintenance of bus halts.

8 Methodology Action Plan Identifying suitable locations for installing bus stops Bidding for the construction under the terms & conditions specified by NTC and any other condition imposed by the Provincial Transport Authority Selecting an appropriate design for bus stops according to the site conditions Construction of bus stops by selected contractors Handing over the bus stop for beneficiaries (PTA) for supervision and monitoring of maintenances work

9 Conditions of Contract Rs.20,000, (or 50% of the BOQ of the bus shelter construction cost) is paid to the contractor by NTC. Construction should be carried out under the supervision of NTC & relevant Transport Authority The contract will be for a period of not less than 2 years and not more than 3 years. Maintenance including Painting at least once a year Daily cleaning inside and vicinity of the shelter Illumination at night time will be a responsibility of the contractor After 3 years fresh contract will be drawn out based on competitive tendering.

10 Penalties & Termination of contract Construction of Bus stop should be started within 14 days & Finished within 30 days of the agreement. Delay will cost 2.5% of the value of the contract per week. Unnecessary delay to start construction work or any other unsatisfactory activities specially in maintenance will cause cessation of the contract Payments Half of the payment is done at the moment of signing of the agreement and half of the remainder is paid at the half of the contract period. Balance of the payment is paid at the end of contract period Receipts Amounts payable yearly from end of 1 st year.

11 Basis of Selection The contractor is selected as having: Agreement to satisfy the terms & conditions Maximum payment per year from end of 1 st year. This money will be for the PTA.

17 Model Specifications Avoiding unauthorized loitering -Avoiding using bus shelter for sleeping at night time and other illegal activities Specifications Using separate small units for seating to avoid comfortable sleeping Finish of floor should be rough to make it difficult for laying on the floor Keep shelter as much as open to avoid illegal activities in side the shelter

32 Location Specifications Location should be decided considering following features of the road section Number of lanes Junctions Bends Pedestrian crossing Traffic signals Railway crossings etc

33 Location Specifications Traffic Signals & Railway crossings It is advisable to locate bus stop with a bus bay at the vicinity of traffic signals and railway crossings

34 Location Specifications At road junctions When traffic frequency is lower Place bus stop after the junction to avoid the possible obstructions to traffic by busses stopping before the intersection When traffic frequency is higher Place bus stop before the junction & after the junction
