Chideock W.I. monthly meeting Report Tuesday 7 March 2017 Chideock W.I. had an exciting afternoon on Tuesday 7 th March when we welcomed Simon, Mervyn and Abbey from Lyme Bay Auction Rooms to our monthly meeting. Members brought along one item for valuation resulting in a table of interesting, unusual and beautiful things. During the talk Simon related how Lyme Bay Auction rooms came about four years ago and how the auction business has been revolutionized due to the internet. Years ago one would have taken things to the grander large auction houses. Since globalization it has become a level playing field because it can now reach a huge worldwide market. Simon recalled how a blue vase valued at at the Antique Road Show fetched 57,000 in the Windsor Auction Rooms, less commission of course. The buyer had seen it on the internet in China. The purpose of the Auction House is to reach the market and to provide a service. The three experts inspected items brought along by members. These included jewellery, a silver punch bowl and an old police truncheon plus many other remarkable treasures. Heather Kidston Couch thanked the speakers saying it was interesting seeing value in bits and pieces we pick up along the way. Welcome bags were presented to two new members. We were pleased to hear that Chideock W.I. raised over 1,100 for various community charities during the past year. Our various groups continue to meet and we look forward to our A.G.M. and Ploughman s lunch in April. 6 VILLAGE HALL FUND We are trying to organise a FLOWER and PRODUCE SHOW at the end of May (Bank Holiday Monday). Initially all monies raised will be added to the new kitchen fund. However, ideally we want to create an annual community event showcasing a variety of produce, handicrafts, paintings/photo's, floral arrangements, jams/chutneys, baking and a children's section. We have set a provisional schedule that we will attach to the main notice boards. Please take time to look at it, any comments will be appreciated. In April we will then print a show programme with the schedule, rules and application form and deliver one to every house in Chideock. There will hopefully be a category for everyone to join in! We are looking for local business's to advertise in the show programme to cover the costs of the printing. Obviously it s trial and error this year but it would be really good to start an annual event that the whole of the community can get involved in. If you feel you can help in any way ie help with organisation, take an advert in the programme or offer any advice we would love to hear from you, please ring Nicky More details next month. We as ever thank you for your support. THE CHIDEOCK LUNCHEON CLUB The Luncheon Club will meet in April on the 25th of the month. We meet at 12:15 for 12:30.in the Village Hall. Please ring Judy Campbell (489121) if you would like to come, but are not yet on the phone list. This is a chance to meet friends old and new and to enjoy some friendly company over lunch. Anyone is welcome to come. The draw for the 100 Plus Club will take place at this event Ride & Stride Award Presentation of the Dorset Historic Churches Trust Trophy on 18 th April 2017 at 6pm in St Giles Church, Chideock. Since 1999 the Dorset Historic Churches Trust (DHCT) has presented the Morshead Trophy, named after the Trust s founder Sir Owen Morshead, to an individual or Parish achieving the most impressive results in their annual Ride and Stride event. Ride and Stride is the main fundraising event for DHCT, raising over 80,000 pounds in The money raised is divided between the DHCT and a named church. DHCT use the funds to make grants to help conserve churches of all denominations across Dorset. We are delighted that this year Richard Benjamin will be presented with the trophy by the Right Reverend Karen Gorman, Bishop of Sherborne. Richard has cycled in this event for the past 5 years on behalf of St Giles Church, Chideock, Loders Methodist Church and Saint Mary Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in North Chideock. All are welcome to attend the ceremony. 6

Shige Takeoe - donation request for Somerset and Dorset Air Ambulance Coast to Coast C2C cycle ride 2017 (14th May 2017) I am doing this ride for the second time. Last year I completed the ride in 4.5 hours, which is slow compared to the many keen cyclists who started with me. But it was hard and I was pleased with the result. This year I have decided to use my beloved 'Yeti' mountain bike with slick tyres, cycling with friends from the village. Help from Air Ambulance is often a matter of life or death. Your contribution will be helping to fund this valuable service, so please give what you can. I will be training for this event tirelessly, aiming to be fit and healthy. Thank you for your kind support. Shige You can donate online direct at - please search 'Shige Takezoe'. Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance Charity Registration No Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance receives no direct Government or National Lottery funding and relies on public donations for support. Our operational costs are over 2 million a year and the approximate cost per mission is 2,500. Please visit for further information. 11 Chideock Parish Council (continued) There will be an "open session" for residents to raise matters which they think the Parish Council should take on board. If any matter is called to a vote, then only people on the Chideock electoral role are eligible to vote. Please note that the Annual Village Meeting is NOT a Parish Council meeting. There s no such thing as the Dog Poo Fairy. There is an increasing problem of dog mess on the verges, pavements, footpaths, bridleways (and even driveways) in the village. Dog owners are reminded that they have a responsibility to clear up after their dogs on every occasion. This includes lanes, footpaths, bridleways and woodland paths. 'Poo bags' should be then disposed of in dog bins, rubbish bins if there is no dog bin, or taken home. They should not be left by the wayside or hanging from the branches of bushes and trees. It would be useful if accommodation-providers could remind their guests of this obligation. Mud and other debris on the Highway. Please note that it is an offence under the Highways Act 1980 to deposit or cause deposit of mud, hedge trimmings, grass cuttings etc. on any highway pavements / footways / public footpaths and bridleways are included in the definition of a highway. Mud, hedge trimmings, grass cutting etc. cause a hazard to vehicles, pedestrians and animals and block the rain water drains, which causes flooding. Public Footpath and Bridleway issues. Please let the Clerk or a Councillor know of any issues of which you are aware broken stiles and gates, missing or poorly located signs, overgrown or obstructed paths etc., so that these can be brought to the attention of the Dorset County Council Rights of Way. RECENT QUESTIONNAIRE AND SUGGESTED CHIDEOCK BYPASS ROUTE Everyone would be in agreement that the traffic on the A35 through Chideock village is too heavy, the vehicles too large and that residents and pedestrians are put at risk. However, there is no agreement in the village concerning the actual route for the currently proposed bypass. The route, referred to in the recent Chideock News Questionnaire, would not go round the village but instead cut through it, destroying the age old beauty of the landscape for ever, very likely demolishing at least one home altogether, as shown in the original plan. This would simply 11

Chideock Bypass (continued) shift the problem a few hundred meters along to another part of this lovely village. Chopping the village up in such a way would not preserve it for future generations. We also know that many people visit Chideock just to walk in its unique and scenic landscape. In addition, a bypass in the proposed location would be detrimental to local businesses relying on passing trade and we would lose our remaining village shop. When, in the 90 s, this current plan was first proposed, an Engineer was engaged and surrounding land was found to be unstable. The project was then deemed to be unsuitable and the plan revoked. It is also fair to say that the problems of the A35 have been frequently addressed by the CPC, with countless meetings with relevant bodies, concerning the size and weight of HGV s, volume of traffic and danger to residents and property. Chideock is also at the bottom of two very steep hills. The Government has in fact committed 2 billion for the completion of a South West Expressway, linking the M3 (Basingstoke) to the M5 at Taunton. This will provide a fast two-way link for HGV s and other traffic heading for the South West from London, thereby substantially reducing through-traffic on this A35. Were there to be an actual bypass for Chideock that did not disect it, a far less damaging route could follow the flatter ground in Marshwood Vale. We ve now heard there is a plan afoot to bury the pylons there. A well landscaped road, run mainly along the top of them, should obviate the need to plough through villages and destroy homes. Whatever happens, we first need to put our immediate attention to traffic calming and safety measures for pedestrians, discouraging HGV s from using this route. A low emission zone and weight restrictions could be an excellent start and less expensive than the tens of millions involved in bitty bypasses set in the wrong places. Those who bought property on the main road will have been aware of the difficulties on such trunk roads. It does not now seem fair that those who did not make that choice should be inflicted with a problem that would also destroy the nature of these AONB surroundings for everyone. For the reasons above, those we have so far spoken to, in the area to be affected by the current proposed Chideock bypass route and in other areas of Chideock, do not agree to the route of the bypass as currently proposed. We hope a better solution can be found. Ian Dunn North Road Chideock 12

CHIDEOCK SOCIETY REPORT We hope that by now members will be enjoying lighter evenings and warmer Spring weather. At the time of writing we are anticipating Colin Varndell's 'Close Encounters' and may now regard some of the smaller forms of wildlife with greater interest. Tuesday 11th April. A presentation by Bruce Upton on Chideock in the 1840's. Using some of the large collection of photos and historical records from the Bridport Museum Archive, come and find out how parts of the village once appeared and how former residents lived their lives. Refreshments and Raffle. Members FREE, Visitors 4. Members have received the Seatown Regeneration Project update which will also be available on the Chideock and Seatown website. The Steering Committee is also looking into ways of informing the wider public who care about this special part of the coast how they can help to conserve it for future generations to enjoy. Also thinking ahead, May is the month we try and revive the ancient custom of Beating the Bounds. Watch out for posters with details nearer the time. New permanent residents are reminded that they can apply for a free copy of A Wander through Chideock (while stocks last!) Call or Copies of the Parish Map are on sale at Moores' Bakery Morcombelake or from DORSET TRADING STANDARDS Scam Telephone Calls Some of the most common scam telephone calls we get complaints about involve cold callers supposedly offering relief from nuisance phone calls! The caller will try to persuade you to buy costly call blocking or telephone preference services, sometimes for a one-off fee, or sometimes for a monthly fee and ask you to set up a direct debit. However, the scam services offered will not block any unwanted calls, and could place your personal information in the hands of criminals. Sometimes these fraudsters even pretend to be calling from the Telephone Preference Service and ask for a card payment in order to block nuisance calls. The TPS is a 13

Dorset Trading Standards (continued) genuine organisation set up to help people stop getting annoying marketing calls from businesses such as personal injury or PPI claims firms, and its service is free. Visit or call to register. Another really common scam is the Computer Software Service Fraud or Microsoft Scam. Callers pretend to be from a variety of organisations such as Microsoft, TalkTalk, BT or the Windows Technical Department. They ll tell you that your computer needs fixing and will ask for remote access, whereby they can then access your personal information, or infect your computer with a virus which they will then charge you to remove. Never respond to an unsolicited phone call from someone claiming that they can stop unwanted calls, or saying that your computer has a virus. If you receive a call like this, hang up straight away, and do not give or confirm to the caller any information at all, not even your name or address and report it to Action Fraud on If you have given any personal information in response to calls like this, contact the Police and also your bank as promptly as possible 14
