Eye Didn t Know That Grades 3 5 Downloadable Version Lesson Script I. Introduction A. Today s lesson is called: Eye Didn t Know That. We will be going on a journey to discover many things about our eyes. We will look at our eyes, their purpose, how to protect them and how to prevent injuries. We will also explore what happens when you visit the eye doctor. B. Our eyes are working hard for us from the moment we wake up in the morning to the moment we fall asleep at night. You may even have an Eye Didn t Know That moment today. C. Before we get started, I would like to go over a few rules: 1. No talking please. 2. Raise your hands if you have an answer to a question. 3. Hold your questions and stories for the end. II. Purpose A. Our eyes are like little cameras constantly taking pictures. (Show picture of hot air balloon, #1) All day long your eyes take pictures of the world around you and send these pictures to your brain. This is one way we can learn about the things around us. Seeing is one of our five senses; it is called the sense of sight. Our other senses are: hearing (ears), smelling (nose), touching (skin), and tasting (mouth). Our sense of sight is the most important sense for learning. (Show picture of phrase I love you/eye heart u. #2) Your eyes just told your brain what the phrase said and your brain just told you what it said. Approximately 80% of everything you learn comes through your eyes! Let s see if your eyes and brain will work together on this game. I need a volunteer. This is called the Stroop Test. I am going to show you a poster with some words on it. I do not want you to read the words to me, but instead say the COLOR of the words as fast as you can. (Have volunteer try to complete the game. #3. Do not show test until volunteer is ready to read.) You can see that this game is much harder than it looks. That is because our eyes read words faster and more automatically than we can name colors. We tend to hesitate when we try to switch to the color, we have a slower reaction time, and we make more mistakes than if we just read the word. B. Let s explore our eyes. Our eyes have two million working parts to help us see things up close and very far away. Today, we are going take a closer look at a few parts. (Show picture of eye diagram, #4) MORE HEALTH, Inc. Page 1

III. Protect 1. We will look at the outside parts of the eye first. The eye brow (Point to your eye brow) keeps moisture, like sweat out of the eyes. Eyelashes (Bat eyelashes) work to keep dust and other tiny things out of the eyes. If something gets too close to the eyes, the eye lashes are like guards that cause the eyes to close. And the eye lids job (Point to your eye lids) is to keep eyes moist and clean. We actually blink approximately 10,000 times per day! Blinking spreads tear fluid over the surface of your eyes. Tears keep your eyes from becoming dry. When you cry, your eyes make more tears than normal. 2. Now let s look at the eye itself. Even though we only see a part of the eye, it is actually about the size of a ping pong ball. We are born with the about the same size eyes as we have now! 3. Look at this eye diagram. The white part of the eye is called the sclera. The colored part of the eye is the iris. Irises are different colors due to the amount of melanin in them. Melanin helps to protect your eyes from strong light. The pupil is an opening that allows light to enter your eye- it appears dark because it s dark in there! The iris surrounds the pupil and is made of muscles that expand and contract to adjust the size of the opening. It automatically adjusts based upon on the light around you. What happens when you go outside in the bright sun? Yes, your pupil gets smaller- to keep too much light from entering your eye. It helps protect the inside of your eye from the bright light. Have you ever gone into a dark room, or gone into your house after being out in the bright sun? Sometimes it is hard to see for a minute. Your pupils need to get bigger to allow more light to come in, so you can see in the dark. 4. If you notice the iris has a clear covering over it, it is called the cornea. It is clear, so you can t see it. Behind the iris is the lens. The job of the lens is to focus light onto the retina, much like a movie projector. The retina turns the light into electrical signals, which are then sent to the brain by the optic nerve. Our eyes work hard to allow us to see and learn. Taking care of them is as important as brushing our teeth or wearing a seatbelt when we are in a car. We need to take care of our eyes because they are the only eyes we have and they can t be replaced. A. The sun warms our bodies and makes us feel good! But too much sun can be harmful. The sun sends invisible rays to the earth. These rays are called Ultraviolet A and B rays. Even on cloudy days, 75% of the sun s rays shine through and can cause damage. The sun s rays can even bounce off of things like pavement, sand, water, and snow. 1. Raise your hand if you have ever had a sunburn. It hurt didn t it? You can also get a sunburn on your eyes. A sunburn on your eyes will hurt the cornea. Remember that the cornea is the clear covering over the iris. Ultra Violet light passes through the cornea and can even damage the lens inside. Over exposure throughout your life could lead to a cataract. That is when the lens, which is normally clear, become cloudy. Children are at risk for getting sunburn on their bodies and their eyes because they are outside more. Studies show that MORE HEALTH, Inc. Page 2

by the time you are 18 years old, (Show picture, #5) you will have had 50-80% of your lifetime exposure to the sun! We need to be ultra careful with the ultraviolet rays. 2. It is important to protect your eyes by wearing proper UV protection. Just like you wear your helmet when you ride your bike to protect your brain, you wear sunscreen to protect your skin. You also need to protect your eyes from the sun. You can also protect your eyes by wearing a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses. Some sunglasses are just for fun, but it is important that you wear sunglasses that have a UV protection tag. If you wear glasses to help you see, you can get Transitions glasses that turn dark when you are out in the sun. They will protect your eyes from the sun, while helping your eyes to see. 3. There is one more thing you need to remember about the sun; you must never look directly at the sun. It can cause permanent eye damage. B. Who plays sports? You can harm your eyes whenever you are playing. There are things you can do to protect them and keep them from injury. (Show racquetball player, #6) Swim goggles with UV protection will protect your eyes from the water and the sun. To protect your eyes from sun in the winter time, wear goggles with UV protection when you ski, ride a sled, or snowboard. It is a good idea to wear goggles when you are playing contact sports like basketball and baseball, any sports with rackets and sticks, or handling bb guns and air soft guns at a target range. There are prescription and non prescription goggles. Make sure you should wear safety glasses when you are mowing the lawn. Another time to wear safety glasses is when you are participating in school science experiments. C. There are other ways to protect your eyes: 1. Always use good lighting when you read. Do not hold your book to close or too far. There is an easy rule to remember to help you hold your book at the right length from your eyes: Put your fist on your chin, you should hold your book at your elbow. (demonstrate) Let s practice it together. 2. Do not sit too close to your television, computer, or handheld devices. Use the same rule as when you are reading, good lighting and keep the electronic devises no closer than your elbow. Let s practice it one more time (do with students). It is important to blink often when you are watching television, on the computer, or playing handheld electronics. Have you heard of the rule? (Show picture of , #7) It is a great rule to follow for every 20 minutes you are watching T.V., playing video games, or on the computer, you need to look away at something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Your eyes will not get as tired or feel as strained. MORE HEALTH, Inc. Page 3

IV. Prevent 3. Why do your parents tell you not run when you are carrying scissors or sharp items? Yes, if you fall, sharp objects like scissors can damage your eyes or other parts of your body. 4. You should not throw things at anyone s face; you do not want anything to get in their eyes. It could cause serious damage. If something does get into your or your friends eyes, tell an adult right away. We just discovered ways to protect our eyes. There are other things we can do to help keep our eyes healthy. Remember, they are the only ones we have. A. Some school age children may get pink eye (Show picture of pink eye boy, #8). Has that happened to you? Eyes become red, puffy, and itchy. Pink eye comes from germs that you may have on your hands. It is important to wash your hands often and try not to touch your eyes. Another good way to prevent pink eye is to not wear other people s glasses and don t share yours. B. You should only wear glasses that your parents or doctor give you to help you see. Not wearing your glasses can cause headaches, cause you to rub your eyes, and cause you to be sleepy. C. Sometimes your eyes may get very dry because they are not receiving enough moisture. It is important to drink lots of water to help them stay moist. D. If dirt or liquid gets in your eye, tell an adult right away. Do not rub your eye because it could scratch your cornea. An adult will wash it out with water. The same thing if you get hit in the eye. You may want to rub it, but try not to you need to let an adult know as soon as you can. E. Another good way to keep your eyes healthy is to eat nutritious foods. Fruits and vegetables are a great way to get the vitamins and minerals your eyes need to stay healthy. In poor countries malnutrition is a major cause of blindness. Vitamin A, found in vegetables, is vital for good vision, especially in children. F. One of the most important ways to take good care of eyes is to visit an eye doctor. (Show picture of eye doctor, #9) He will check your vision and let you know if your eyes are healthy. When you start school, you need to see your eye doctor on a regular basis. Even if you don t wear glasses, it is still very important to visit the eye doctor since your eyes change everyday as you grow. If you notice you are having trouble seeing things far away or if you have to hold your book very close in order to read it, you need to tell an adult. Maybe your vision is a little blurry or you are just not seeing things clearly; you do not need to be afraid, but it is important to tell your parents or your teacher. Let s talk about your visit to the eye doctor, so you will have no surprises when you get there. First we will look at the machines that help the doctor check your eyes. MORE HEALTH, Inc. Page 4

1. This is the slit lamp. (Show picture of slit lamp, #10) This magnifies your eyes to help the doctor detect disease and infections. 2. The phoropter (Show picture of phoropter. #11) helps the doctor determine if you need glasses. 3. And this machine is called a tonometer (Show picture of tonometer, #12) and it checks the pressure of your eye. You will feel a puff of air when you have this test. 4. The eye doctor may put drops in your eyes to dilate your pupils making them larger. They will be a little sensitive to light when you leave the office. Do not worry; it will not last long. You may want to wear your sunglasses. 6. Raise your hand if you have ever seen a chart like this one? (Show eye chart, #13) Who wants to volunteer to read it for me? (Do as many volunteers as time permits.) V. Power Do you know what 20/20 vision means? It is when a person can see at 20 feet what should normally be seen at that distance. But 20/20 only indicates the ability to see clearly, it doesn t always mean you have perfect vision. Although you may have 20/20 vision, you still should visit the eye doctor. The doctor may determine you need glasses. Glasses can help you see better. A. Glasses will help correct things like farsightedness, (Show picture, #14) which means you can see far away, but have trouble seeing things up close. B. They can also help with nearsightedness. (Show picture, #15) This is when you cannot see things far away, only things up close. C. Astigmatism that is a hard word, but it is when your cornea is uneven. (Show picture, #16) It can affect how light comes into your eyes and it can change how something looks. D. Why do some people need glasses and other don t? Everyone s eyes are a little different, not just the color but the way they work and how well they see. Sometimes all the parts of the eye do not work together the way they should but eye glasses, also called corrective lens, can help those who need them see more clearly. Other people may not be able to see at all, this is called blindness. Blindness can occur from many different things, however there are aids such as guide dogs and canes to help get from place to place and Braille which is a form of writing/reading. Next time you are on an elevator, look for the Braille on the panel. E. If the doctor determines you need glasses, the next step is fun. (Show boy with glasses, #17) You get to try on glasses, to find your perfect pair. Wearing glasses, if you need them, helps you excel in sports you can see the ball coming at you faster; you may react quicker. Wearing glasses helps you read faster and many times better. MORE HEALTH, Inc. Page 5

Glasses can help you with hobbies like playing handheld video games or doing arts and crafts. F. Can you think of any famous people that wear glasses? (Justin Timberlake, Michael Jackson, Ben Franklin, Ashton Kutcher, Sarah Palin) (Show picture of Harry Potter, #18) Also characters like Harry Potter wear glasses. V. Conclusion I have enjoyed exploring our eyes with you. We had a lot of Eye Didn t Know That moments as we discovered the importance of our sense of sight. We learned that our eyes are forever and we must take care of them by protecting them from the sun, visiting the eye doctor, practicing the rule, and wearing our glasses, if we need them. We can also help keep them healthy by not putting our fingers or other objects in them and by eating fruits and vegetables. Remember, if the doctor tells you that you need to wear glasses wear them from the time you get up to the time you go to bed, so you can always be your very best. MORE HEALTH, Inc. Page 6
