1 LAL Torbay Adult Pre-arrival Information Welcome We are looking forward to meeting you when you arrive. Here is some important information about travelling to Torbay and what will happen when you get here.

Look for the LAL logo when you get into the arrivals hall. Our staff will meet you in the arrivals hall. They wear red uniform and/or carry clipboards with the LAL logo. If a driver meets you they will have clipboards with the LAL logo. If you cannot find one of our staff, telephone the school on +44(0) Tell us your name and where you are, we will send somebody to help you. 1
3 Travel to Torbay When you arrive, our staff will bring you to Torbay. You may have to wait for other students to arrive before leaving the airport. If you arrive at London Heathrow Airport the journey to Torbay will take approximately 5 hours including a break. If you arrive at any other London airport the journey will take longer and transport may go via London Heathrow Airport. If you arrive at Bristol Airport the journey will take approximately 2 hours and if you arrive at Exeter Airport it will take approximately 1 hour. If you have booked Homestay accommodation they will meet you on arrival or send a taxi. If you have booked Residence accommodation you will be met by a member of staff.
4 Making your own way to Torbay If you have organised your own transfer, but have booked accommodation through LAL, you must inform LAL of your flight details one week before arrival. Please contact your Homestay family and tell them your arrival time. If you travel by train the cost of a ticket from Heathrow Airport to Paignton is roughly This usually involves changing trains two or three times. If you travel by coach the cost of a ticket from Heathrow Airport to Paignton is roughly This is usually direct. If you travel by taxi the cost is roughly 250. More information about travel options to Torbay are available on our website 2. When you arrive in Paignton you will need to make your own way to your Homestay, Residence or Hotel. For a local taxi please telephone +44(0) First Day On your first day please be at school at If you are in Homestay accommodation they will show you the way. If you are staying in our Residence or a Guest House, maps will be available and the staff will be happy to help you. When you arrive we will ask you to complete an online registration form and will then take an English test to help us place you in the right class. After this you will have an induction to the school and Torbay. At you will start your lessons. At we will take you on a walking tour of the local area. 2

6 At the end of your course you will receive a certificate if you have 80% attendance. Accommodation The maximum distance to school is approximately 45 minutes walking or on public transport. You can buy a weekly bus ticket at the school for If you are 16 or 17 years old, you must be back in your Homestay by Host Family Staying with a Homestay is a great way to practise your English and learn about the English way of life. Your host family will give you breakfast and an evening meal. You will need to buy your own lunch. If you have any allergies tell us before you arrive. Your Homestay will wash bed linen, towels and a reasonable amount of your personal items. They will do a minimum of one load of laundry per week. Not all Homestays have internet access.
7 Hunters Lodge Our student residence is perfectly located for the school and the town. It is a 5-10 minute walk to the school. The building has wireless internet access in public areas. There is a large garden with a lovely sea view. The residence is self-catering with a shared kitchen and lounge. There are laundry facilities on-site open daily to It costs approximately 8 per load for washing and drying. Bring your own towels. Clean bed linen is supplied on arrival and then once a week. Public areas of the residence are cleaned daily, but students are expected to wash their own dishes and utensils. Bedrooms are cleaned before you arrive, but you are expected to keep them clean during your stay.

9 You can book nights out in local pubs, explore the countryside or visit historic sites in the area. You can book on LAL Advantage or at reception. Things to do in Torbay Torbay has everything you need for a great holiday: good food, beautiful coastline, sandy beaches and lush green countryside. Historical cities such as Bath, Bristol, Exeter and Plymouth are all close by. Torbay offers a range of outdoor activities including tennis, golf, walking and paddleboarding. Nearby Torquay has excellent nightlife with a variety of night clubs, cocktail bars, pubs, restaurants and cafes. There are many tourist attractions in the area including Paignton Zoo, Agatha Christie s house, Kent's Cavern, Totnes and Buckfast Abbey. 3

11 Important Information Cars drive on the left of the road in the UK. Tap water is drinkable. Passports and pocket money should be left in your accommodation to prevent any losses or theft. Voltage in the UK is v AC 50hz and we use fused plugs with three square pins. The legal drinking age in the UK is 18. It is illegal for anybody under the age of 18 to buy cigarettes in the UK. Anybody found in possession of or using illegal drugs may be arrested by the police and will be sent home at your or your parents expense.
12 Students who are caught stealing, either from the school or from a shop, will be sent home at your or your parents expense. LAL Torbay reserves the right to send home, at your or your parents expense, any student who persistently breaks the school rules, causes wilful damage to school, staff or another student s property, behaves in a manner which is potentially dangerous or detrimental to him/herself or others or breaks the law.
