In the town he devotes his energies to blacksmithing and not far distant in Tillamook counity he owns eighty acres on which he is conducting a dairy business. His dual interests, carefully managed, are bringing to him substantial returns. He was horn in Lagrange county, Indiana. September 10, 1841, a son of Abel and Sarah Maria (Lewis) Mattoon. Both were natives of Ohio, Ill which state they were reared and married, removing then to Indiana where the father engaged in general farming until He then sold his property there and started for Oregon with ox teams. It was a long and arduous journey across the state of Illinois, then to the other side of the Mississippi and on over prairies and plains and through the mountain passes until nine months were consumed on the way. They spent the first winter at Oregon City, after which the father secured a homestead claim upon which he resided until l880. In that year he sold his property and removed to Oregon City, making his home with his son. O. P. Mattoon, until his death which occurred in 1889 when eighty one years of age. His wife passed away three years later. In their family were nine children of whom eight are living: John Prentiss, a resident of Yakima. Washington; O. P., of this review; Rosilla, the wife of William Hughes, of Palouse. Washiington; Orilla, the twin sister of Rosilla and the wife of Newton Walker of Oregon; William Henry, of Clackamas county, Oregon; Newton Wheeler, who is living in Idaho; Leander, a resident of Oregon City: and Clarice, the wife of Charles Gale, of Newberg, Oregon. The second child, Mrs. Malinda Dubois, is deceased,

7 O. P. Mattoon was a lad of six years when he started to Oregon but st ill remembers many incidents on the long journey, the family sharing in the usual hardships and privations of the trip across the plains, He pursued hisr education in the schools of Oregon and at the age of eighteen years began learning the blacksmith trade which he followed until For ten years he resided in Oregon City and then came to Tillamook county, casting in his lot with the representatives of its agricultural interests by purchasing eighty acres of land a mile and a half south of Hebo. Upon that property he is conducting a dairy business, keeping a number of good cows and finding a ready sale for his product. He also conducts a blacksmith shop in the town where he has four and a half acres of land, and to this work he gives the greater part of his time and attention, leaving the dairy and farm to the management of his son. In 1867 Mr. Mattoon was united in marriage to Miss Emma Lenora Dixon, who was born in Wisconsin and in 1865 came to Oregon with her parents, who located in Clackamas county, although both died in Washington. Mr. and Mrs. Mattoon were the parents of eight children: Edwin Adelbert, who when last heard from in 1891 was in Montana; Joel Abel, deceased; Lewis Clifton and Roy William, both residents of Tillamook county; Guy, who is living on his father's farm in the same county;.james Perry, of Hebo; Jessie, deceased; and Oliver, of Tillamook county. In his political faith Mr. Mattoon holds to the views of the socialist party but does not desire nor seek political office, feeling that his time and energies are fully occupied in the conduct of his business interests. He has worked diligently and persistently and it has been through his untiring industry that he has won for himself a place among the substantial citizens of Tillamook county." Mattoon--Aside from their rating among the most progressive agriculturists of Clackamas County, there are probably more large land owners claiming a parentage by the name of Mattoon than have emanated from any other family settling on the Pacific coast. During the last half of the eighteenth century there was born in New York State a predestined farmer who had eight children, John, Abel, Allen, Liza, Polly, Orila, Remey M., and Orln M. With these children the father came to Oregon In 1847, and in meantime Polly and Orila had married men by the name of Cutting, and Liza had become the wife of a Wells. The party came across the plains with ox teams, and at the end of their months' journey stopped near Oregon City, the next year all hands going out to vicinity the of Viola, where, with the exception of John, oldest son, they took up separate donation claims. To Abel fell six hundred and forty acres; to Allen, the same amount; to Remey, three hundred and twenty acres; to Orin, same amount; to each of the Cutting ladies six hundred and forty acres, and to Mrs. Wells a similar amount. It will thus be seen that the name of Mattoon was firmly established in Clackamas County at a very early day, and from the outset has been indicative of ambitious and altogether substantial undertakings. Abel Mattoon. the father of William H.. the latter of whom is one of the prominent citizens of this county, was born in New York State in 1806 and died in Oregon in In his early youth he learned the millwright and carpenter trades, and when a young man accompanied parents and brothers and Sisters to the State of Indiana, where his son, William H., was born In La Grange County, October 3, When the family fortunes were shifted to the Coast in '47, Abel located on his six hundred and forty acres of land, and in connection with its management started a sawmill at Viola, paying his hands as

9 high as $20 a day for their services. He worked up quite a lumber business, and in time shipped wares to San Francisco. His industry as farmer resulted in the clearing of one hundred acres of his property, upon which he lived on contentedly until the year before his death, when he went to live with his son, Perry M. He was a man of firm character and much natural ability, and in his adopted state made his influence felt in many ways. During the Civil War he served as County Commissioner under Republican rule for a couple of years, and he was for many years a member of school board. In religion he affiliated with the Methodist church, in which he was a steward, towards which he contributed as his means permitted. One of the most ambitious of the brothers and sisters who came here in the early days, he was a typical pioneer, broad-minded liberal and keenly alert to the advantages by which he was surrounded. For one year he was survived by his wife, Sarah (Lewis) Mattoon, who passed into silence at the age of 72 years. Of children born to this couple, Prlntiss (sic-prentiss lives in Yakima, Washington) Yakima lives in Washington; Mrs. Malinda Dubois is deceased; Perry M. lives in Tillamook, Oregon; William H. lives in Viola; Mrs. Orila Walker a resident of Viola; Mrs. Rosila Hughes also lives in Oregon; Newton M.; Leander M. is a resident of East Portland, and Mrs. Clarissa Gail lives in Qregon City. At the of 21 years William H. Mattoon left his father's home and spent a year In Eastern Oregon, after which he entered Willamette University, remaining there for three years. Having qualified as teacher he engaged in educational work from 1870 to 1873 in Clackamas county, and then took up mail contracts, making his home in the meantime in Sylvester. In 1875 he removed to homestead near Viola, purchased one hundred forty acres of the original donation Claim taken up by his father, upon which he has since been engaged in general farming. Like his sire, he represents the most progressive liberalminded element in his neighborhood, and like him had a hand in promoting general good government and agricultural excellence. For a number of years he filled office of constable under Republican administration and has also been road supervisor, as well as school director eighteen years, and school clerk for a number of years. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, steward in same. In 1873 Mr. Mattoon married Caroline Tracy, of which union there have been born eight children: Arthur, of Cascade Locks; Frank, of Redland; Harvey, of Viola; Mrs. Edna Brown, of Linn county; Herbert, of Viola; John, of Viola; Eva of Viola and Robert of Viola."
