2 Youngstown-Warren, OHIO Since 2008, economic development project announcements have resulted in an impressive $8.4 billion in investment, 7,900 new jobs and 12,560 maintained/retained jobs. About Youngstown-Warren: Forbes named Youngstown State University as one of its top four-year public and private universities and colleges. This is the third year in a row that YSU has made the list. YSU President James Tressel noted that being among the 650 means Youngstown State is near the top 20 percent of colleges and universities. Youngstown has been named the nation's top city for healthcare access and home affordability by a finance technology company. SmartAsset places Youngstown at the top of the list for the second year in a row, as the city was also named No. 1 in The New York based company credits Youngstown's top ranking to its affordable housing market and YSU's healthcare support. Youngstown placed in the top 10 in the annual ranking of economic factors compiled by Business Facilities. In the 11th annual Metro and Global Rankings, Youngstown is ranked 10th in the category of economic growth potential and sixth for cost of living. Canfield High School is one of the best high schools in preparing students, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds, for college, according to Newsweek s 2015 high school rankings. The school ranks No. 332 of 500 schools and is the only Mahoning Valley school to make the list. During the academic year, Youngstown State University drew approximately 534,123 visitors to campus for sporting events, musical performances, lectures and art displays. That number doesn t include students or people who work at the university. Thousands of competitors gathered in Canfield for the Steel Valley Cluster dog show. The show, in its 24 th year, brought approximately 22,000 visitors from the U.S., Canada and Mexico. It is one of the top five largest outdoor dog shows in the U.S. Poland and Struthers have are on the 2015 list of SafeWise's 50 safest cities in Ohio. Ranked at number 4 and number 46 respectively, the SafeWise list, featuring Bryan, Madeira and Olmsted Falls in its top three slots, was created using FBI violent and property crime statistics from U.S. News & World Report released its annual rankings of the best hospitals in America. St. Elizabeth s Hospital in Youngstown came in at No. 17 on the Ohio rankings, while St. Elizabeth s in Boardman ranked 18th. The annual U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings, now in their 26th year, recognize hospitals that excel in treating the most challenging patients. The Youngstown/Warren Metro Area was the ninth least expensive urban area in the U.S. of 302 metro areas, according to the 2014 Cost of Living Index released by The Council for Community and Economic Research. Youngstown-Warren also was the least expensive urban area in Ohio. TEDx 2014, an international conference focusing on technology, entertainment and design, took place in January at Youngstown State University with the help of the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber, Mahoning Valley Young Professionals, Park Vista of Youngstown, the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County and the Youngstown Business Incubator. The TechBelt Initiative, a cooperative effort among communities from Pittsburgh to Cleveland and including the Mahoning Valley to improve technological advances collectively, received the International Economic Development Council s Bronze Award for The National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute, or NAMII, in Youngstown, the only such center in the U.S. has rebranded itself "America Makes" to spark a unified, U.S.-based additive manufacturing and 3D printing movement. It was also named as one of the top 10 Innovations to Watch by The Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program. Victory Media Inc., in June 2013, named Youngstown as a Top 50 Military Friendly City for The designation notes that the Youngstown area has a strong focus on opportunities for transitioning veterans and their families in the areas of employment, education and affordability. The Youngstown Air Reserve Station, which provides training facilities for thousands of Air Force, Marine Corps and Navy reservists and employs about 2,000 people, reported that it pumped an estimated $123 million into the local economy in 2012, up $8 million from The Chevrolet Cruze, assembled at the General Motors Lordstown Plant, is one of the top selling cars in the U.S. A study by Affordable Colleges Online ranks Youngstown State University as the 11th best online college in Ohio. Among the criteria on which the rankings are based are the number of degrees offered, the ratio of undergraduate students to faculty, a university s six-year graduation rate and the percentage of students receiving financial aid.

5 TRANSPORTATION Bus Services: Western Reserve Transit Authority (WRTA) provides fixed-route county-wide transportation services around Mahoning County, and to select destinations in Trumbull County. Driver License Once you are an Ohio resident, you need to become an official Ohio driver as soon as possible. The driving test is usually waived for new residents who have a valid out-of-state license. 21 In the Press News outlets from around the country turned their attention to the Mahoning Valley as nationally renowned Youngstown State University football coach Bo Pellini and the Penguins faced off against the University of Pittsburgh Panthers in the season opener. The Wall Street Journal named the Butler Institute of American Art as one of the destinations in a story on five summertime road trips around the nation featuring museums, installations, galleries and private collections. Due to a collaboration between Major League Fishing and the Mahoning County Convention & Visitors Bureau, 24 of the world s best bass tournament competitors were brought here, and the region s lakes and landmarks will be featured in TV coverage that will be broadcast in 2016 on The Outdoor Channel. Major League Fishing GEICO Select Series action was filmed at Mosquito Creek Reservoir, Lake Milton and Aqua Ohio s Evans and Pine lakes. The result will be a series of seven TV shows that will air on the Outdoor Channel early in 2016 to an audience that could number in millions. Spike TV filmed episodes of its show Bar Rescue in Youngstown, transforming the Royal Oaks and Martini Brothers. The show, starring bar and nightlife management expert Jon Taffer, visits struggling bars and gives them a physical makeover and also identifies and reverses poor business practices. The Valley s economic success and attractiveness was featured in Business in Focus magazine, which circulates to more than 300,000 companies and site selectors in North America. Downtown Youngstown s revitalization, especially the number of jobs and residents, was featured in the New York Times. The Association of Defense Communities recognized in its industry publication the Youngstown Air Reserve Station s efforts to increase its community involvement, including its public-private partnership to protect the installation against government cutbacks. The Youngstown Air Reserve Station s initiative was presented during the Association of Defense Communities Installation Innovation forum in Monterey, Cal. In December, 2014, the Valley was the focal point of a CNBC series of stories on how the Midwest is shedding its Rust Belt image. Mercy Health Youngstown, formerly Humility of Mary Health Partners, is among only 75 cancer care centers in the country to receive the 2014 Outstanding Achievement Award from the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons. Only the top 15% of cancer care programs surveyed received the award for The North America affiliates of Vallourec, including the Youngstown-based Vallourec plant, received the prestigious Total Satisfaction Award among global oilfield product manufacturers in the independent EnergyPoint Research 2014 Oilfield Products Customer Satisfaction Survey. Youngstown was named a 2014 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International, has extended its accreditation for undergraduate and graduate programs in the Williamson College of Business Administration at Youngstown State University. Drake Manufacturing Services Co., in Trumbull County placed 36th on Case Western Reserve University s Weatherhead School of Business Management list of Northeast Ohio s 100 fastestgrowing companies. Eastern Gateway Community College is the nation s 10th fastest growing public two-year college. The rankings, compiled annually by the trade journal Community College Week, calculates the percent change in headcounts from year to year. A study completed by SmartAsset, a data-gathering website on financial topics, lists Cortland as the No. 1 place to retire in Ohio and Youngstown as the No. 2 place. SmartAsset s study looked at income and sales tax; the number of doctors offices in the area; and opportunity for recreation and social life. Global Trade magazine listed Youngstown among the Top 10 employee-friendly places in the U.S. The ranking was announced when Global Trade published its third annual Best Cities for Global Trade report. The University Business Incubator Index named the Youngtown Business Incubator the world's best business incubator associated with a university. The Sweden-based index exists to analyze and improve business incubators in 60 countries around the world. U.S. universities affiliated with business incubators include Stanford, Cornell and UC Berkeley. Business Facilities magazine touted the Youngstown-Warren Metro Area in four of their top 10 rankings in their 2014 Metro Rankings Report. Girard is ranked sixth and Youngstown ninth on the SmartAsset.com list of most affordable places to live in Ohio. The January 2015 ranking was based on low property taxes, homeowners insurance fees and mortgage payments when measured against the local median income. Youngstown State University s graduate program in counseling is among the top 25 most affordable in the Midwest, according to a list released in January 2015 by Best Counseling Degrees. YSU s program in the Beeghly College of Education is ranked 17th in the 12-state Midwest region. Youngstown State University President Jim Tressel was selected in January of 2015 for induction in the College Football Hall of Fame. Tressel amassed a record in 24 years as a head coach and took YSU to four Div. I-AA national championships.
