2 2 NYC Parks nyc.gov/parks/rangers URBAN PARK RANGERS Message From: Deputy Commissioner Robert L. Garafola NYC Parks & Recreation NYC Parks As the long nights of winter give way to the thawing streams of spring, there are countless opportunities for us to reconnect with our outdoor environment around us. It can be easy to lose touch with the natural world in the cold winter months. However, with over 29,000 acres of land in our Parks system under the skilled stewardship of our Urban Park Rangers, it s incredibly easy to renew our relationship with the outdoors without even leaving the five boroughs. New York s outdoors have always had a special place in my heart. When I was growing up in Washington Heights, we used to go fishing at Dyckman Street on the pier that is adjacent to the La Marina restaurant. One of my first catches was a long, slimy eel, which to a nine-year-old looked like a python. An hour later, the kid next to me pulled in a 2-foot striped bass. I always wondered where that beautiful fish came from and how it got down the Hudson River to my neighborhood. Our urban jungle supports an incredible diversity of wildlife. Beavers swim down the Bronx River. Snowy owls have been spotted in Fort Totten, Queens and Staten Island. Seals can be seen off the shores of Pelham Bay Park. This past December, a coyote was found roaming in Crotona Park in the Bronx, before he was safely reintroduced into a more suitable environment. The Rangers introduce New Yorkers of all ages to the ecological diversity that surrounds them. From watching eagles at Inwood Hill Park to feeding a medley of animals at the Salt Marsh Nature Center, the Rangers offer customized tours of the best wildlife viewing spots throughout the City. The Rangers offer programs for a variety of interests. Amateur meteorologists can learn about our region s weather patterns at the Fort Totten Visitor s Center. Historical tours illuminate our storied city s past. Other programs teach skills like orienteering, wilderness preparedness, and how to build a better bird feeder. The Rangers are educators as well as conservationists, caring for our wildlife and protecting our natural spaces as they help New Yorkers foster a love of the outdoors. Their dedication and commitment to nature shines through in the work they perform every day. Whether you re an experienced outdoorsperson or a nature neophyte, the Rangers have a free program suited for you. I invite you to explore the outdoors of NYC with a Ranger as your guide. Let our 29,000 acre paradise lift your spirit like a soaring eagle we have those, too! Urban Park Ranger Nature and Visitor Centers Bronx Crotona Nature Center: Crotona Park. 3 URBAN PARK RANGERS nyc.gov/parks/rangers NYC Parks 3 Renovated Fort Washington Park in Manhattan offers new opportunities for outdoor recreation This winter, NYC Parks completed several major projects in Fort Washington Park in upper Manhattan to provide new recreational opportunities, increased access to the waterfront, and improved pedestrian and greenway paths along the Hudson River. Photo by Daniel Avila NYC Parks In a ten-block area roughly between West 158th and 168th Streets, Fort Washington Park now offers a new Nature Discovery playground, an upgraded section of multiuse greenway, volleyball courts, picnic areas, redesigned baseball diamonds, and a soccer field. These projects in Fort Washington Park are part of an ongoing $30.4 million restoration funded by PlaNYC. Upcoming improvements to Fort Washington Park include the creation of a new greenway that reaches the northern edge of the park at Dyckman Street, new ADA-approved ramps connecting Fort Washington to Inwood Hill Park, and the rehabilitation of a pedestrian bridge over the Amtrak line at 180th Street. Located along the Hudson River from 155th Street to Dyckman Street, Fort Washington Park offers spectacular views of the Hudson River, the New Jersey Palisades and the George Washington Bridge. This 160-acre ribbon of dramatic cliffs, meadows and wooded areas was preserved by Robert Moses during the construction of the Henry Hudson Parkway, which runs along the park s eastern edge. The Little Red Lighthouse, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is featured in a popular children s book The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge, is located in the center of park. Fort Washington, Fort Tryon, and Inwood Hill Park form a green corridor along the Hudson River that is perfect for outdoor recreation of all kinds. The NYC Parks Urban Park Rangers lead hikes, astronomy lessons, birding programs, and many other activities in these parks. For more information, visit nyc.gov/parks. Ranger in the Spotlight: Kathryn Boula Urban Park Ranger in the Bronx Photo by Michael Vincent NYC Parks How long have you been an Urban Park Ranger? Since I started as a seasonal Ranger and was hired full-time at the end of my first season. What do you enjoy most about being a Ranger? I connect well with children. To me the best part of being a Ranger is when I can get on their level and help them learn about the natural world. Whether it s during a Natural Classroom program, or a summer Custom Adventure program, or just a couple of kids visiting a Nature Center, I truly enjoy interacting with the kids of New York City. What are your favorite programs? I thoroughly enjoy leading Ranger Conservation Corps (RCC) programs, which are 10-week mentoring programs for teens. RCC allows me to look at my park and see how I could help make positive changes. I love working closely with local high school students, and empowering them to become stewards of the environment. I recently visited a butterfly garden that one of my RCC groups planted in Fort Totten nearly 6 years ago, and I was so happy to see it still thriving! What is your favorite park and why? Pelham Bay Park is the largest park in New York City, and I d have to say that it is my favorite park because there are so many different places to explore! There are tidal pools, pine groves with nesting Great Horned Owls, historic mansions, and great hiking trails. What are you most proud of? As an Urban Park Ranger, you are called to rescue injured or sick wildlife found in the park. Over the years I have helped hundreds of animals, but one situation in particular will forever stay with me. I was leading an overnight camping program at Inwood Hill Park and a camper noticed a dog far out in the salt marsh, stuck in the mud. With every move the dog made, it sunk a little deeper into the mud. I knew that I had to act fast because the tide would come in soon. I grabbed another Ranger and a canoe, and paddled on top of the mud out to the struggling dog. With some unknown strength, I hoisted the 90 pound dog into our canoe. I was surprised in that moment when I heard a roar of applause, and I looked up to see a huge crowd surrounding the salt marsh cheering us on! We got the dog to shore and reunited with its owners, who told me they ll never let their dog off the leash again. What are your hobbies/interests? I am a new mom, so any free time I have I like to spend it with my daughter and husband, especially doing outdoor activities. I also enjoy volunteering for the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, helping them to learn about nature, and hopefully inspiring the next generation of Urban Park Rangers.

7 URBAN PARK RANGERS nyc.gov/parks/rangers NYC Parks 7 Fishing Catch-and-release fishing is a great way to get outdoors and discover nature just a few blocks from home. Our experienced Rangers teach the ethics of fishing and the ecology of our waterways on every fishing program. You can try to hook a largemouth bass, pumpkinseed sunfish, carp or chain pickerel. Whether you choose to grab a simple bamboo pole at a quiet lake, or join more advanced saltwater or fly fishing programs, the Rangers have a program that fits your skill level. Participation in a mandatory safety review lead by a trained Ranger is required. All equipment is provided. All fishing programs are catch-and-release only and most fishing programs are first-come, first-served. Seining programs, which use nets to catch fish and crustaceans close to shore, are great for kids of all ages. Families and children ages 8 years and older are welcome to participate in all other fishing programs. 8 8 NYC Parks nyc.gov/parks/rangers URBAN PARK RANGERS Hiking and Orienteering Hiking is the ultimate way to enjoy the outdoors and reduce stress. Regardless of the intensity level, it is a great way to burn calories and stay fit. Our Urban Park Ranger hiking guides will introduce you to the hidden gems of New York City, places often off-limits to the general public. On our hikes, you can gain orienteering skills, explore our City s rich history, or just take an hour to unplug from the world. On Nature Exploration Hikes we will discover the plants and animals that inhabit the urban forest. Our Night Hikes allow participants to see parks in a different light, and are great for families. Fitness Hikes feature less talking and more walking, for those who don t mind a vigorous two-hour hike. Learn how to navigate using a map and compass on our Orienteering programs. Special geo-cache programs teach you how to use a GPS while searching for hidden prizes. Hiking and Orienteering programs feature intensity levels ranging from light (a leisurely stroll on mostly paved paths), to moderate (longer, faster paced hikes on rugged terrain), to vigorous (long distance, with hills and rugged terrain). For all hiking programs we recommend wearing comfortable shoes or boots, and packing water and a light snack. 9 URBAN PARK RANGERS nyc.gov/parks/rangers NYC Parks 9 History and Culture Ice-age glaciers, Native Americans, Dutch traders, British Redcoats, and the Underground Railroad have all left their mark on New York City. Their stories can be found in the names of our streets, our architecture, and our parks. Urban Park Rangers specialize in interpretation of historic turning points, both natural and man-made, in our city s long history. Revolutionary New York programs focus on the history of New York during the pre- and post-colonial Period. Historic New York programs highlight the history of selected neighborhoods or parks. Architecture and the history of the Hudson River are explained at Manhattan s Little Red Lighthouse. All programs are historic walking tours unless otherwise noted. Certain popular programs have limited space and require registration. 10 10 NYC Parks nyc.gov/parks/rangers URBAN PARK RANGERS Kids and Family We connect children with nature to encourage active exploration of the natural world. Children who spend time outdoors develop strong imaginations and learn to socialize better with others. Urban Park Rangers are role models who encourage children to let their imaginations run wild in a safe, supportive atmosphere. While nearly all of our programs are familyfriendly, the programs highlighted here are specifically designed for young children and families. Whether enjoying a family-friendly beach exploration, freeing your imagination by playing in nature, or learning about conservation through eco-crafts, a free Ranger program is the perfect addition to your family s weekend.
