RIDE WORLD WIDE Spain Can Muni & the Catalan Coast 2018 Ride Information Sheet These rides are based in North East Spain s province of Girona. Originally set up by Mick Peters at Can Jou but now operating from Can Muni, the team have been running rides in the area for over 16 years and have created some super itineraries that successfully combine adventurous, fun riding with a chance to enjoy the local landscapes, culture, food and wine. The enthusiasm of the current partnership, Trek & Ride, has brought improvements to the riding programmes and for 2018 there are some wonderful, varied options on offer. Rides start and end at Can Muni, a restored medieval hamlet set in the rolling hills above the coastal plains of Emporda. Less than 2 hours drive from Barcelona and an hour of Girona, both accessible by direct flight from many UK regional airports, the whole area is easy to get to and the rides offered, although not luxurious, are excellent value for money. The approach is 'hands on' with guests expected to help look after their horse to a greater extent than on many rides, but the atmosphere is relaxed, fun and informal. For great value riding, in a wonderfully unspoilt area, it is a great holiday choice. Dates Various ride itineraries for 3 to 7 nights are offered from set departure dates or on request between March and November. Please see 2018 dates and itineraries at the end of this Information Sheet and contact Ride World Wide to check availability. The Horses The horses used are well schooled Spanish Arab and Andalucian crosses. Most are of a medium build and between about 14.2hh and 16hh. All have been carefully chosen for their character and aptitude. They are fit, good natured, forward going and responsive to ride and well adapted to the sometime rough terrain. Saddles are mostly general purpose English style, with most horses ridden in snaffles. Saddle bags are provided to carry items required during the day and for picnic lunches. Riders are expected to groom, tack up and un-tack their own horse each day before and after rides and even occasionally to clean their own tack if necessary. There is a maximum rider weight limit of 90kgs.

[2] Riding Several different ride itineraries are offered - please see summaries at the end of this Information Sheet. The Discovery and Family Rides are flexible one-base programmes, with nights spent at Can Muni and daily riding out to explore the surrounding forest and coastal plains. The Mountains & Beach Ride, Beach Ride, and Two Beaches Ride follow progressive routes with nights in different village hotels. They generally include 5 to 6 hours riding each day. The maximum group size for most rides is 8, plus your guide. Please note that between mid June and early September there is no riding allowed on the beaches - except for one morning on the set date Discovery & Beach Ride. Discovery and progressive ride programmes are often run simultaneously so there may be more than 8 guests staying at Can Muni (which is also open to non-riding guests) at any time. Pace The riding pace depends a little on the itinerary chosen, with the progressive rides generally involving longer distances at a faster pace. Several days riding on these routes is on lowland coastal plains where much of the going is soft or compacted sand tracks and wide paths that are excellent for horses, allowing a medium to fairly fast pace and lots of opportunities for long trots and canters. The Discovery Ride is more flexible and a bit slower overall, but there are always some good opportunities to move on and in general all rides are run at a good, moderate pace. The pace always depends on a number of factors, including weather and group ability and it can vary from week to week. Riding Experience The set date progressive rides are all geared towards reasonably competent riders and to participate in any of these you must be well-balanced and secure in the saddle, comfortable and able to control a well-schooled horse outside at all paces from walk to fast canter. A good independent seat and balance are important - sometimes the going can be tricky and rough (especially early in the year when routes can be overgrown or wet weather may mean a change to routes normally used) - and riders are expected to be able to cope with different going and different types of terrain. All progressive rides also require a good level of riding fitness and you should be riding regularly - at least 2 hours a week in the few months before the trip is recommended - to ensure you can cope with the hours in the saddle. Discovery Rides are a little more flexible in terms of riding hours and pace (eg it is easier to miss a day s riding if you wish) so these are open to less experienced riders, although participants are still expected to have a reasonable amount of experience and be comfortable and well-balanced at a walk, trot and canter. Family Ride programmes are adaptable and young (8yrs is the minimum age to ride out) and novice riders can be taken on these with advance notice. There are places on all rides where riders may need to dismount and lead their horse for a short way - if the ground gets rough or steep and for a short time to warm up and cool horses down each day - so riders need to be comfortable handling a horse from the ground, able to mount and dismount unaided and fit / agile enough to walk leading a horse for up to 10 minutes or so at a time. Riders are also expected to groom, tack up and un-tack unassisted. Your guide will go over the week s program when you first arrive (usually at dinner on the first night), explaining special characteristics of the horses and tack and discussing each rider s ability, experience and riding / horse preferences. Please note that everyone is required to wear a hard hat when riding - there are some to borrow but we strongly recommend taking your own to ensure a good, secure fit. Terrain The riding terrain varies with itinerary and often changes rapidly from day to day. The region boasts several protected nature reserves and even close to the coast, is unspoilt - in places virtually untouched - retaining much of its natural beauty and wildlife. Routes combine mountain tracks, wide paths through cont. over

[3] Terrain cont. peaceful wooded valleys, low scrub and heather and, in some places, across open fields. Sometimes riding is on tarmac roads through villages but there are also plenty of opportunities to ride fast, particularly on the progressive rides, with many compacted sand paths that are perfect for long canters. Even in the mountains sand and gravel tracks, open pasture and harvested crop and corn fields provide good chances to move on. Accommodation Accommodation, although not luxurious, is of a reasonably good standard and all rooms have their own bathrooms (usually with shower & loo). Can Muni (where the first and last night of most progressive rides and all nights on the Discovery & Family Rides are spent) dates back to medieval times. It is in a rural setting, surrounded by its own woodland, in a fairly remote location about 20 minutes walk from the nearest village. The traditional stone buildings have been carefully renovated and re-furbished and there are now 3 cottages, with 9 bedrooms in all, as well as a further 7 bedrooms, dining and sitting room in the main building. Bedrooms vary in size, are simple but stylish and comfortable enough with terracotta tiled floors, iron beds, wardrobes and ceiling fan. Can Muni has its own swimming pool, perfect for a refreshing dip after a day s riding, a large open fronted barn where meals are eaten outside and for cooler evenings, there is a sitting area downstairs and individual cottages have their own living room. Accommodation on the progressive rides varies according to availability along the route, either small hotels - usually about a local 2 to 3* standard, some with swimming pools - or in more remote areas, smaller guesthouses. The latter are simpler but often with plenty of local character. Meals Breakfast, lunch (generally a picnic) and dinner are included each day on all rides, although on family rides lunch is excluded on one day during the week, and it is possible to book excluding lunch if you prefer. Local wine (red) is included with lunch and dinner - other drinks are at your own expense. Breakfast is usually simple Spanish style - bread, butter, jams, sweet cakes with cheese, ham and / or eggs available on some days. Lunch on progressive rides is usually a picnic out riding, either a simple lunch of bread, ham and cheese etc, carried in saddle bags or served on tables and chairs set up in the countryside, or it might be a selection of salads, pizza or perhaps a paella served back at the base. Dinner is generally three substantial courses with local specialities often on offer, seafood (particularly on rides to the coast), traditional dishes such as cod baked with tomatoes and raisins, bean stews, roast chicken, pork and also game such as wild boar. Weather Average daytime temperatures in the area in March and November are usually 12 to 15 degrees C. In April, May, June and October daytime temperatures are generally between 15 and 23 degrees C. In summer months, July, August and September, daytime temperatures are generally between 24 and 35 degrees C - although obviously there are variations each year! At night, even in winter, the temperature rarely drops below 5 degrees C, with summer nights around 18 to 20 degrees C. Rain can fall throughout the year.

[6] Flights and Transfers - Meeting place for the rides is Barcelona or Girona airport. Rates quoted above (other than for Discovery & Family Rides) include transfers from / to Barcelona or Girona airport at fixed times on the first and last day. If you are hiring your own car, Perpignan is another convenient airport to use (see below). Transfers take approximately 45 minutes each way from Girona; 1 ½ hours from Barcelona (although stop-off in Girona on the way back from Barcelona, can make the overall transfer time from Barcelona to Can Muni up to 2 ½ hours). The set meeting time at Barcelona airport on Day 1 of the ride is in Terminal 1 (NB allow about ½ hour to get from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1) and the meeting time in Girona is usually If flying to Barcelona you are advised to ensure your flight arrival time is by to accommodate any delays and if flying into Girona, arrival should be by (guests arriving Girona will usually be collected (by the same bus) on the way from Barcelona to Can Muni). Return flights should depart after on the final day. British Airways, Iberia, Easy Jet and several other airlines have direct flights to Barcelona from a number of different UK airports. Ryanair also have flights to Girona from various UK regional airports. Flight costs vary from as little as 50 to around 250 per person economy return (seasonal and depends on the airline). We can book British Airways flights for you if you wish - please call if you need any advice on flights, for a quote or help booking (our ATOL number for flight bookings is 6213). If you prefer to hire a car and drive yourself to Can Muni we will supply directions and the car can be left at Can Muni for the week. Arrival at Can Muni should not be before on the first day. The drive from Barcelona airport takes about 2 hours; and from Girona airport about 40 minutes. You can also fly to Perpignan in France (eg from regional UK airports with Ryan Air) and drive yourselves the 50 mins or so from there to Can Muni. IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT SET TRANSFERS. PLEASE NOTE that bus transfers are organised with an independent transfer company at a heavily subsidised group rate and are at fixed times. Whilst the bus may occasionally wait for late flight arrivals IF a large number of guests are using the delayed flight and / or the company s schedules allow, it generally will NOT wait for anyone - and if you are not ready at the set meeting time, you will need to make your own way (at your own cost - approx 220 euros from Barcelona / 75 euros from Girona for a taxi). If you wish to make use of the subsidised transfer service, you are therefore advised to make sure you book a flight that arrives in plenty of time (by for Barcelona, by for Girona) and to take into account the possibility of delays in the time you allow. Please also note that the bus picks up at Barcelona airport Terminal 1 first and then goes on to Girona and if there is a delay at Barcelona airport for any reason, those arriving in Girona will have to wait. If you prefer a transfer that is tailored to your own arrival / departure times, taxis from Barcelona / Girona can be organised - please contact us for a cost.

Additional information on the area for before or after the ride Girona province is an area of great contrasts, from the high peaks of the Pyrenees to the rugged coastline of the Costa Brava and there is plenty to explore. [7] Girona, perched on a hillside and the provincial capital, is a compact, elegant and historical city. There is much to see including the magnificent Gothic cathedral, the beautifully preserved Banys Arabs (Arab baths) built in the 12th century and an outstanding example of Moorish and Romanesque design, and the Jewish quarter, a town within a town, lost following the expulsion of the Jews in A leisurely walk along the medieval walls which encircle the old city provides wonderful view of the city and surrounding countryside. Barcelona, 60 miles south east of Girona, is the capital of Catalunya region and well worth a visit. The city has a long artistic heritage and is famous for its varied architectural styles, especially Gothic and the modernist art nouveau style exemplified by Antonio Gaudi. Unmistakable Gaudi facades, the Gaudi Park, statues and mosaic covered buildings are dotted throughout the city which also has many excellent restaurants, great shopping and seafront promenades that are perfect for a relaxing stroll to watch the world go by. General visa and health information (NB this is only a brief outline - further information will be sent to you if you make a confirmed booking.) NOTE - visa requirements can change without notice and it is your responsibility to check up to date requirements with the Spanish Consulate.
