If it doesn't, click here. ** N.Y. / REGION Pier 40 to Be Saved Under Plan to Build 1,500 Apartments in West Village By MARC SANTORA OCT. 20, 2015 After years of debate, disagreement and inaction, New York City officials and developers plan to announce on Wednesday a proposal to save Pier 40, the former cargo terminal in Manhattan that is in danger of collapsing into the Hudson River, by selling off air rights to a developer that plans to build on the other side of the West Side Highway. The plan, which still needs to go through a public approval process, envisions raising more than $100 million by selling the air rights to allow the development of five buildings between Clarkson and Charlton s, on the eastern flank of the highway, that would include hundreds of apartments for low and middle income households. The money raised would be used to repair the 15 acre pier, which is currently known to most New Yorkers for its public parking lot and crowded but aging athletic fields. A recent study found that the pier was falling apart, with more than half of the 3,500 steel pilings that support the structure suffering from severe deterioration. This is a huge win for the park, said Madelyn Wils, the president of the Hudson River Park Trust, a partnership between New York State and the city that is charged with the design, construction and operation of the four mile NYU Langone moves ahead with Lutheran Medical Center merger NYU Langone disclosed in recent financial statements that it has committed $190 million over five years to the Sunset Park hospital. But the hospitals decided to pursue a merger "to expedite the growth of NYU Lutheran as a premier site for high quality medical care in Brooklyn and to address the increasing financial challenges it faces," according to an application seeking regulatory approval from the state Department of Health. NYU Langone disclosed in recent financial statements that it has committed $190 million over five years to the Sunset Park hospital. The pledge includes a $50 million grant for investment in capital projects for clinical programs, a $100 million loan to implement an electronic patient health record and other new information systems, and a $40 million loan for investment in other capital projects and equipment. New York's community hospitals increasingly are looking to large health systems for financial support, exploring strategic alliances and mergers. One impetus is the shift in hospital reimbursement to a model where they are paid a set monthly amount based on how many patients they are responsible for. This method favors large systems with multiple hospitals spread across the region, such as NYU Langone. Currently, in the fee for service model, most hospitals are paid for each test and procedure performed.
