2 By Dave Ruple Flying Wallendas Spectacular Shows In a brand new show for the Geauga County Fair, Circus incredible will provide amazing, world-class acrobatic performances. Circus Incredible is made up of second, sixth and seventh-generation circus performers who have performed internationally, proving their artistry with world records, awards, and worldwide recognition. The troupe consists of Rietta and Lyric Wallenda of the World Famous Wallenda family. Along with Simon Arestov of Moscow, Russia, they will display their aerial artistry with grace, beauty and strength, amazing audiences of all ages with jaw-dropping acrobatics and balancing. The Wallenda Family first began performing as early as 1780 in the cafes of Old Bohemia in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Wallenda family was a traveling circus troupe consisting of acrobats, jugglers, clowns, aerialists and animal trainers. Traveling through the villages of Europe, they performed in the city squares, trusting in their talent and skills to provoke thrills and joy to spur generosity from the audience as they passed a collection hat around. In the late 1800s and for the next two generations, they became known for their expertise in the art of flying trapeze. It was Karl Wallenda, who in the 1920s answered an ad for a talented performer, and became part of the troupe that was recruited by Barnum and Bailey Circus. Karl met his wife Helen Kreis in that same troupe, building a family during the 1930s and 40s under the tent of the Greatest Show on Earth. In 1947, Karl decided to establish his own circus, and thus the Flying Wallendas were established, and they have been performing ever since. The nomadic Wallendas have faced great danger in the Barnum Fire tragedy, as well as spectacular moments like a 15-minute standing ovation after a thrilling demonstration in 1928 at Madison Square Garden, the achievement of a seven-person highwire chair pyramid, and Karl s 1200-foot long walk across the Tallulah Falls Gorge in Georgia at the age of 65. Carrying on the family tradition, the modern descendants of the Wallenda family are no slouches. Rietta, Lyric, and Simon continue to tour the nation putting on some of the highest quality displays of acrobatic artistry available anywhere. Rietta Wallenda is a sixth-generation circus performer. She is the granddaughter of the late Karl Wallenda. Rietta started performing in the circus like most generation circus performers at the young age of 5. She mastered many different aerial feats such as the Spanish web, aerial lyra, trapeze, sway pole and high wire. At the age of 13, Rietta made her debut in the Wallenda highwire act beside her grandfather Karl Wallenda. She toured the world with The Great Wallenda s, performing and carrying on the family tradition. Rietta s journey took her to 2 August 19, 2015 performances at international circus festivals and competitions, including the London Circus World Championship in London, England, where they took first place. At the Monte Carlo Circus Festival in Monte Carlo, Monaco, Rietta received the Silver Clown for the U.S.A. and took special awards. Rietta was the top person in the eight-person highwire pyramid, helping to set a 2003 record in the Guinness Book of World Records. She has performed for Disneyland Euro in Paris, and filmed a circus movie, doubling for Cathy Rigby in The Great Wallenda s. She performed in the NFL Super Bowl half time show in 2000 for Disney, the NFL Pro Bowl half time show in 2008, and has traveled with some of the biggest Shrine Circuses in the USA and Canada to casinos, theme parks, cirque production shows, galas and special sporting event shows. Lyric Wallenda Arestov is a seventhgeneration circus performer, also of the world famous Wallenda family. She is the great-granddaughter of the late Karl Wallenda, and in true Wallenda fashion started practicing since before she could remember. Making her debut professionally at the age of 5, she performed a single trapeze aerial display! Lyric continued to practice and master a wide assortment of aerial acts, such as the Spanish Web, Aerial Lyra, Sway Pole, High Wire and Aerial Perch. At the age of 11, Lyric made her debut performing the aerial perch with her mother. At 13, Lyric began performing professionally on the sway pole and in the family high wire act, touring all over the world performing with her mother and other family members. Lyric has performed and participated in Circus festival and special events all around the world, performing Double Aerial Lyra at the Sarasota Circus Festival 1995 in Sarasota, Florida where she received a special award. Alongside her family, she performed the High Wire at the Monte Carlo Circus Festival 2004 in Monte Carlo, Monaco and they received the Silver Clown for the USA and special awards. Lyric was also in the family high wire act as a participant for the 2003 Guinness Book of World Records. Lyric has performed for Six Flags theme parks in the Batman Stunt Shows, NFL Pro Bowl half times show 2008, has starred in a Diet Mountain Dew commercial in 2007 on the high wire, and has traveled with the Wallendas. Lyric and Rietta s busy schedule and long list of achievements promises a spectacular show at the fair. Simon Arestov originally from Moscow, is a second generation circus performer. Simon made his professional circus debut with the Moscow State Circus, where he performed with his parents in an acrobatic troupe. At the age of 5, Simon began performing a Hand to Hand balancing act with his father. For years, Simon and his family performed in many different countries all over the world, including: Russia, Poland, Bulgaria, Chile, Peru, U.S.A., Canada, among many others. At the age of 13, Simon made his first solo debut performing, the Rolla-Bolla. Later Simon also added two more acts, the Spinning Cube and the Comedy Strong Man. Simon has performed these acts all over the U.S.A. for many Shrine Circuses, theme parks, festivals, fairs, galas, sports half time shows (NFL Pro Bowl half time show and CFL half time show, among others), circus and cirque production shows. Simon was a participant in two International Circus Festivals. In 1995, he performed his Hand to Hand balancing act at the International Circus Festival in Sarasota, Florida, U.S.A., where he was awarded the Bronze Metal. Simon participated in the Festival of the City of Latina in Latina, Italy, in Simon performed his Rolla-Bolla and Spinning Cube acts, and was awarded the Silver Plate and voted number one by the journalists of the Latina Newspaper. This trio of performers has worked together as both a family and as a performance troupe, lending (often literal) support and training to each other. Few families can claim as many accolades, and we are happy to welcome them to our little corner of Ohio. Be sure to catch their performances in the Midway building 2, Thursday, Sept. 3 at 5 and 7:30 p.m.; Friday 2:30, 5 and 7:30 p.m.; Saturday 1, 4:30, and 7:30 p.m., Sunday 1, 4:30, and 7:30 p.m., and Monday 3 and 6:30 p.m. For information about the Wallendas visit

3 By Christina Grand Porter Family Safety at the Fair Before heading out to The Great Geauga County Fair, think safety first. If you will have young children with you, talk to them and establish some rules of safety. Don t let them run. A lot of people aren t looking where they re going so they could easily be knocked down. While you don t want to scare them, let them know how important it is for them to stick close to the family and stay away from strangers. Consider snapping a digital photo of each child before leaving home so you ll have a proper description of the children and what they re wearing on hand. When you arrive, scope out the scene. Familiarize yourself with the fair s layout and choose landmarks to help you find your way around quickly. Decide on a designated meeting spot for your family, in case anyone gets separated from the rest of the group. Have them repeat where you will meet if separated before continuing. Never instruct them to go to the car in the parking lot if they lose you because it can be a dangerous area that leaves them at risk for abduction or injury. Instead, choose a well lit and highly populated spot. If your child is young enough to not yet remember your cell phone number, consider writing it on their arm, under their sleeve, in permanent marker. It will last a few days, but it will wear off. Avoid dressing your children in clothing or a backpack that displays their names; children are more likely to trust an adult who knows their first name. Instead, pick out brightly colored clothing that is easy to recognize in a crowd. If staying after dark, put glowstick necklaces and bracelets on the kids so they are easier to spot. We like to think of Geauga as a very safe place, but crowds offer opportunities for pickpockets and thieves. Don t carry your wallet or cell phone in a back pocket. Opt instead for a front pocket and make sure your purse is zipped or closed and wear it close to your body. Don t carry all your cash in one place; put a few dollars in an accessible pocket and keep the rest of your cash and credit cards in a different pocket or in a zippered purse compartment. Dress for the weather and don t forget to bring and use sunscreen. Throw a few band aids and an antibiotic ointment in your purse so you re prepared for scrapes or blisters. If a very young child gets a small boo-boo, there are more than enough distractions at the fair to take their minds off it. Attend to the wound and find them a new small toy, balloon or tasty treat. Small purchases such as these can work wonders at helping them forget their injury. There s a lot of great things to eat at the fair, but be selective, keep track of what everyone s eating, and decide when to go on the rides and when to eat to avoid stomach aches and sickness. Remember why you re there in the first place and be aware that your mood can affect the day for everyone. Be patient; big crowds mean you may have to wait for bathrooms, food and even entering and exiting the fair. Be present and enjoy yourself. The fair only comes once a year, so pack up a year s worth of fun and happy memories on your visit. Geauga County Pomona Grange Diner The Geauga County Pomona Grange is busy getting ready for the fair. Several members have been meeting to plan the display booth in the Agriculture building at the south end of the fairgrounds. Huntsburg, Hambden and Ledge Granges will have displays explaining what Grange is all about and showing what they ve been doing the past year. They are also preparing to serve thousands of meals to hungry fairgoers at the Geauga County Grange Diner located next to the First Aid station across from the milking parlor. They will serve roast beef and meatloaf dinners and sandwiches such as grilled cheese, hamburgers, sloppy joes and hot dogs for lunch and dinner. At 7 a.m. they serve breakfasts of eggs, pancakes, sausage and bacon. For something sweet there are pies, cookies and fry pies to enjoy. All money raised during the fair will help the Grange s efforts to help the community. The Grange is a family organization that has been around since They improve their communities through planting gardens; offering youth leadership opportunities; hosting concerts; helping with Memorial Day activities; providing dictionaries to school age children; promoting deaf awareness and much more. If you would like to learn more about this great organization stop by the Diner and ask. They are always looking for new members. Rubber Chickens and Crowing The show must go on, which means there will be a Chicken Flying contest and a Rooster Crowing contest at the Great Geauga County Fair. The Chicken Flying contest will be held, as usual, on Fun Day, Fair Day Thursday, Sept. 3 at noon in the Small Grandstand. According to the director of poultry, David Parker, due to the Avian Flu ban on poultry, the difference will be in the chicken, it will be rubber. The plan is to slingshot this rubber chicken from the mailbox aiming at a target. The usual entrants will be competing including friendly rivals Kenston and West Geauga. Kenston is the current trophy holder. The Rooster Crowing contest will be held Sunday, Sept. 6 at 4 p.m. in the Small Arena. This event will be hosted by Mark Nolan of WMJI Radio. The crowing roosters slated for competition and entertainment will be costumed humans, male and female. There will be several age groups and a panel of three judges will score the roosters based on the best impersonation. Sounds like the place to be to strut your stuff. The Religious Roots of Fairs By Christina Grand Porter GET OUT AND RIDE! New & Used Bikes Scooters Sales Parts Service Accessories CountrySide Bicycling, LLC 8663 Cox Rd., Windsor (4 miles east of 528, off Burton-Windsor Rd.) authorized dealer for 4 August 19, 2015 Both the Old and New Testaments have references to fairs mixed with references to commerce, trade, the marketplace, festivals, religious feasts and holy days. It isn t known exactly where and when the first fair was held; however, it was way before the eighteenth century Europe which many of us would imagine to be the root of today s county fairs. Evidence points to the existence of fairs as early as 500 BC Scripture records in the book of Ezekiel: Tarshish was thy merchant by reason of the multitude of the kinds of riches with silver, iron, tin and lead, they traded in thy fairs. Ezekiel s account of the destruction of Tyre, supposedly written about 588 BC, describes Tyre as an important market and fair center. One well known Biblical story that blends religion and commerce was when Jesus angrily expelled the moneychangers, those who were cheating people, from the Temple to keep it a house of prayer rather than a den of robbers and thieves. Fairs were commercial events from the beginning. Merchants from distant countries would come together, bringing native wares to trade with one another, and even though it is not clearly explained in Ezekiel or in other biblical references, it is reasonable to assume that fair was the name given to the place where early trading between foreign merchants was conducted. Something often unnoticed is that religious activity was clearly a close companion to the commerce. During the early Christian era, the church took an active part in sponsoring fairs on church feast days, and as a result, fairs came to be a source of revenue for the church, much as modern churches hold bazaars, dinners, festivals and rummage sales to produce extra income. The Latin word feria meaning holy day is a small step away from of the word fair. A feria was a free day or holy day, which was celebrated as religious holidays. Each feria was a time for large numbers of people to assemble for worship, and worship in those early days was centered around temples in great cities, including Ninevah, Athens, Rome and Mecca. These cities were respected as both the religious and commercial centers of the world, and fields adjacent to the temples were staked out for traders. Religious figures were placed strategically about the fields to protect the traders and merchants and, in general, to keep the peace. The mingling of agriculture, commerce, and religion shows that religion was at the center of most political, economic and social activities in ancient and medieval times. Gatherings blending religion and commerce brought together the producers of all types of commodities for barter, exchange and sale. Entertainment and other activities were added over time, and with each addition, these primitive markets took on more and more aspect of the fairs we know today, finally becoming more secular and concentrating on education, entertainment, and competition. Through time, the central activities of North American fairs replaced religion and today our fairs are places where the body, not the soul, are fed.
