1 Friday, July 29, 2016 Washington DC July 21-31, 2016 Volume 88, Number 8 Daily Bulletin 88th North American Bridge Championships Gabay wins Mixed BAM Teams Winners of the Freeman Mixed BAM Teams: Paul Lewis, captain Sheila Gabay, Linda Lewis and Victor King. Fergani-Pollack capture Wernher title The Montreal-based duo of Kamel Fergani and Fred Pollack won the four-session Wernher Open Pairs last night, parlaying a strong carryover from their victory in the qualifying round with two 58-plus percent games in the final sessions. In second were Brian Glubok of New York City and David Treitel of Miami FL, who finished one and a half boards behind the winners. This was the first NABC win for Pollack who was King of Bridge in 1992 and the second for Fergani whose previous victory came in the 1988 Men s (now Jacoby Open) Swiss Teams. Fergani and Pollack recently won the Canadian National Team Championship, earning the right to represent Canada in the World Bridge Games in Poland in September. It was Pollack s first CNTC win, but Fergani s sixth. Burke Snowden of Fort Collins CO has been selected as the 2016 King of Bridge by the ACBL Educational Foundation. The annual award recognizes a graduating high school senior for their playing record and overall participation in the bridge community, and the list of previous recipients includes some of the best-known names in the game. Snowden, 18, first encountered bridge at a very early age. I learned to play bridge with my parents and grandmothers, starting when I was 6 years old. In the evenings after dinner, they would play some bridge over dessert, often putting a movie on to keep me entertained. However, being the curious kid that I was, I would frequently wander over to their table, trying to see what this game was that was keeping them so entertained. Finally, I convinced my parents to let me sit on their laps during the game. First, they would ask me to help count their points. Then they would ask me to pull a card for them. Eventually, I convinced them to let me hold a hand of my own. Snowden s parents divorced when he was 6, and a few years later, his father began dating a woman who was an ex-duplicate player. She convinced the elder Snowden to play at a new club for intermediate and newcomer players near their home. Ever vigilant, I got hold of it and, of course, wanted to know what it was. Before long, I convinced him to take me to that very club. I got hooked, started to play more and became a club director at age 11. Snowden directed at the Fort Fun Bridge Club in Fort Collins. When he was 14, he bought the club and renamed it the Ace of Clubs. Snowden was actively playing during this period, too, and he became a Life Master in 2011 at 13. He is currently a Silver LM. His accomplishments in bridge are lengthy and remarkable. A member of the U.S. Junior teams for several years, Snowden has played in three World Youth championships ( ). In 2013, he was a member of the U.S. squad that captured the gold medal in the Under-21 team championship. Director Scott Humphrey reports an unusual director call. This was the auction: West North East South 1 Pass Pass Pass 2 East summoned a director. Humphrey advised the table that the final contract was 1 but that East West were free to take advantage of the 2 bid for purposes of defending. East complained, What about South? She should not be able to take advantage of the bid. Humphrey calmly replied, Sir, who is the dummy? After careful consideration, East replied, I am! us Got a hand you just have to share or a nice story? We d love to see it. The Daily Bulletin has its own address: NABCDailyBulletin@acbl.org. You ll also find it on the front page under the Daily Bulletin between the date and the editors names. This address won t be checked with any regularity when the NABC is not in session, so please continue to use our office addresses for nontournament related correspondence. Notice to players Each player must have an ACBL convention card filled out and on the table. Please note that other types of convention cards, such as the WBF convention card or homemade cards that do not sufficiently resemble the ACBL convention card, are not acceptable substitutes. 3 Daily Bulletin Friday, July 29, 2016 Page 3 JUST FOR NEW PLAYERS For this tournament, the anecdotes you re used to seeing at the beginning of the column are replaced by a Quick Tip at the end. Enjoy. Disclosure By Brent Manley When I was editor of the Bridge Bulletin, it was not unusual for me to receive letters and s from readers who consider the principle of full disclosure to be nonsensical. Many cite the game of football to make their arguments. The quarterback doesn t tell the opposing team he is about to throw a pass, they say. One team doesn t give the other team its game plan. It s fine for the Green Bay Packers to play that way, but not for you and me as a bridge partnership. If we and everyone else could play anything we wanted to with no requirement to tell anyone the meanings of our calls, we could create all kinds of havoc at the bridge table that is, until players moved on to gin rummy, hearts or Monopoly. Bridge would die. Okay, we have established that the opponents are entitled to know what you and your partner are playing. How, you might ask, do they acquire that knowledge? One handy tool is the ACBL convention card. The laws require that each member of a partnership have convention cards that are filled out identically. These cards exist for the benefit of the opponents, not the owners. With one exception, you are not allowed to refer to your card from the start of the auction to the end of play. The exception is that if the declaring side is asked for clarification of a call, either or both members of the declaring side may use the card for that purpose. Alerts and Announcements are two other ways to comply with the requirement for full disclosure. If you have doubts about which calls require Alerts and which do not, a handy reference is the convention card. All calls that require Alerts are listed in red. Announcements are listed on the card in blue. Anything listed in black requires neither an Take all your chances By Eddie Kantar Dlr: West Vul: Both K Q A Q A K Q J 5 3 West North East South 1 Pass 1 Dbl Pass All Pass With both sides vulnerable, West opens 1, partner, fearing the worst, passes. East responds 1 and you double. West passes and partner tries to bid 1 with confidence. East bids 2, you bid 3 and everyone passes. Partner can t believe it. West leads the K and then the A (king from ace-king in Alert nor an Announcement. An example of a call requiring an Announcement is a transfer over a notrump opener, most often 1NT or 2NT. If you open 1NT and partner bids 2 (transfer to hearts), you should say, Transfer. It s unlikely, but if there is another meaning in your system for 2 (the convention card lists Forcing Stayman as one option), you should say, Alert. An important point is that when partner makes a call that requires an Alert, it is improper to say anything but that one word. Do not explain the call unless asked to do so by an opponent. Further, in making your explanation, do not simply give the name of the convention you are playing. An example is the Bergen raise of a majorsuit opener 3 or 3 to show a certain high-card point range with four or more trumps. If partner s response to your 1 opener is 3, say Alert. If an opponent asks, say, It shows 6-9 support points and at least four trumps. Do not say, It s a Bergen raise. In a newcomer game, some supported suits) and a third diamond to East s queen. Plan the play to show partner that no hand is too weak not to realize a plus score. The idea is avoid losing two heart tricks. Of course, if East, the heart bidder, has the king, there will be no problem. But he may not. The way to discover who has the K is to discover who has the A! Drive out the A after ruffing the third diamond high to stay in practice. If West takes the trick with the A, play East for the K because he needs it to have enough to make a one-level response, although it can t hurt to cash the A before leading a heart from dummy to your queen. Of course, you have drawn trumps before leading a heart to the queen. If East takes the trick with the A, play West for the K. West needs the K to have anything opponents may be reluctant to ask the meaning for fear of being embarrassed that they don t know. If you have a question about an opponent s action, you can ask when it is your turn to call. In general, unless you intend to take action depending on the meaning of the call, it is best to ask your questions at the conclusion of the auction. You are entitled to full explanations of all calls. Quick tip Even if you don t plan to play certain conventions, you should try to gain some knowledge of conventions you are likely to encounter, even in newcomer games. Further, you and your partner might want to discuss defenses to bids you will certainly encounter, e.g, the 1NT opener. It is important to compete, even when the 1NT opener (15-17) gives the impression that the opponents have the balance of strength. If you have a shapely hand e.g., 5-5 in two suits a good fit with partner can overcome a lot of the opponents high-card strength. resembling an opening bid, Without the K, the most West can have is 10 HCP, including three jacks. If West has the K, it must be singleton or doubleton as you cannot avoid two heart losers if West has three hearts to the king. If East shifts to a heart after winning the A, go up with the A, draw trumps, ending in dummy, and lead a low heart toward your queen intending to play low. The key is driving out the A to determine who has the K and play accordingly. The full deal: J A 9 6 K 9 J A K J 3 2 Q K Q A Q A K Q J 5 3

He and longtime partner Tobias Stone are credited with developing the negative double, the unusual notrump, 1NT forcing and weak two bid. An ACBL Grand Life Master with more than 12,000 masterpoints, Roth won 26 national titles, including the Spingold five times, the Vanderbilt three times and the Reisinger twice. He represented North America in the Bermuda Bowl in 1955, 1958 and A WBF Life Master, he placed second in the World Team Olympiad in During his first world championship appearance, Roth was declaring a 2 contract and felt he played the hand before but as a defender. The director, Al Sobel, did not believe him because the hands had been dealt at the table. Sobel made Roth call out all the cards in each hand including the spots before he threw out the board. No one ever discovered how this happened. Roth retired from active bridge competition in the Seventies but remained active as a staff member of Bridge Today and on panels of The Bridge World, Bridge Today and Australian Bridge. He was the author of The Roth Stone System, Al Roth on Bridge and Picture Bidding and coauthor of Bridge Is a Partnership Game, Modern Bridge Complete and Bridge for Beginners. A longtime resident of New York, where he owned and managed the Mayfair Club, Roth retired to Boca Raton FL. Buy your entry early! In an effort to speed up the start of all NABC+ pairs events which require additional time for proper seeding the ACBL asks participants to please buy their entries at least 15 minutes before game time. This is especially true if you expect to be a seeded pair. Youth and Junior entries Coupons will be made available for junior members in good standing for entry into events at NABCs: 1. Any player under the age of 26 years who is a full-time student (must provide proof of eligibility) will be entitled to coupons that can be used for any event. These coupons will have a value of $10 per session. 2. Any player under the age of 21 years will be entitled to coupons that can be used for any event. These coupons will have a value of $10 per session. 3. Any player 19 years and under will be granted free plays for each session of regionally rated events. 4. Players under the age of 26 years named to teams to represent Zone 2 NBOs in world competitions for NABCs occurring between the time they are named to the team and the world championship will receive free plays at NABCs when playing with members of their team or members of another team representing a Zone 2 NBO. Convention card reminder Each player is required to have a convention card filled out legibly and on the table throughout a session. The convention card must include the first and last name of each member of the partnership, and the cards must be identical. If a director determines that neither player has a substantially completed card, the partnership may play only the Standard American Yellow Card and may use only standard carding. This restriction may be lifted only at the beginning of a subsequent round after convention cards have been properly prepared and approved by the director. Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6-board matchpoint penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and continuing until the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the director. If the director determines the partnership has at least one substantially completed convention card but has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign such penalties as he deems to be appropriate under the circumstances. The objective of these warnings and penalties is the encouragement of full compliance with ACBL regulations.

13 Friday, July 29, 2016 Washington DC July 21-31, 2016 Volume 8, Number 2 Daily Bulletin 2016 Youth NABC Editor: Brent Manley Parents, teachers all in on youth bridge Students and teachers from two Orange NJ schools with youth bridge programs Park Avenue School and Oakwood Avenue Community School. Barbara and Larry Steiner live in Altamonte Springs FL, in the Orlando area. They both have fulltime jobs, but Barbara can be found on any Sunday working most of the day to create boards for students in the bridge class she teaches at Teague Middle School every Tuesday morning. She wouldn t dream of failing to prepare for the class. I don t want to disappoint anyone, she says. The Steiners and other parents and teachers attending the 2016 Youth NABC in Washington are devoted to the promotion of bridge for young players. I love it and they love it, says Barbara. The parents say their kinds focus better in school because of learning to play. Barbara got the idea for teaching at Teague when her granddaughter started bridge lessons at another school in the area. When Barbara found a sponsor for the bridge lessons at Teague, she jumped right in. It s amazing how bridge draws these kids in, she says. When she works on the 60 boards she takes to the classes students show up an hour before classes start Barbara takes care to be sure the deals match up with the experience level of the students. Some her students parents have started taking lessons because of the enthusiasm of their children. The kids are speaking another language, she says. The kids have really come so far. The routine for keeping up with the classes is exhausting, so Barbara is looking for help or at least some ideas for reducing her hours. Anyone with ideas should her at barbsteine@aol.com. Another Altamonte Springs resident and enthusiastic bridge supporter is Jessica Rosenblatt. Her daughters Delaney 12 and Paige, 9, love the game. She now attends Barbara Steiner s class. I like it because I can play with friends, she says. Rosenblatt says that although fun is the main benefit of the bridge lessons, her daughters have gained social skills and improved memories. Delaney now occasionally plays with adults at a club in Orlando. One of the most faithful supporters of the Youth NABC is Jim Davis, of Williamsburg VA. Davis has brought groups of parents and their children for years. Two of the parents, Jeremy and Melissa Smith, of Williamsburg, were happy to bring their two children, Kaiden McKeoun, 10, and Kendal, 7. Jim is phenomenal with the kids, says Jeremy. Melissa adds that both of her children have shown improvements in their math studies since starting to learn bridge. Kendal likes to meet new people. Stephanie Leek, also of Williamsburg, brought her 12-year-old daughter, Caitlin, to Washington. Caitlin started playing only a year ago, but is already hooked. She just jumped into it and really enjoys it, says Leek. She is a logical thinker. Bridge is something she excels in and enjoys. Orange NJ has been a source of players for the Youth NABC for years, and they re back for the Washington DC edition. Two schools are represented this year. Denise Harlem, who teaches elementary studies, has been involved with the bridge club at the Park Avenue School since she took bridge lessons seven years ago. The club is getting bigger and bigger, she notes. There are now close to 30 continued on page 4 YOUTH NORTH AMERICAN BRIDGE CHAMPIONSHIP SCHEDULE Looking ahead to No. 10 Eight years ago, 10-year-old Piper Ziebarth was enjoying her bridge class at the Lamplighter Montessori School in Memphis, when her teacher made an announcement about a new possibility for bridge play. It was the inaugural Youth NABC in Norcross GA, a suburb of Atlanta. The tournament was played alongside a sectional. Ziebarth went with three Montessori classmates. She had such a good time that she has missed none of the tournaments in the past eight years. She is attending her ninth Youth NABC in Washington and hopes to talk her parents into letting her go to next year s edition in Toronto. Piper Ziebarth She made the trip to Georgia in 2008 without knowing what to expect. There we a lot more kids than I thought there would be, she says. One vivid memory was a group of young players from Hawaii. I thought that was really cool. continued on page 2 Mom approves of bridge a thinking game When he was a seventh-grader, Suchit Shrestha surprised his mother, Sunita, by showing interest in an after-school bridge program at the middle school he attends in Seattle. The family moved to that city from Nepal about four years ago. Suchit was never interested in cards, his mom says. When the bridge class put on a tournament for the students, Suchit and his partner won. Says mom, He was very excited. The two came to Washington for the Youth NABC after visiting family in Boston. Sunita likes the fact that bridge is a game for thinking. I m very happy that he likes it because it has helped his concentration, she says. He is doing better in his studies. Suchit, who will enter eighth grade this fall, said he decided to try bridge because it was something I could do to get away from TV and you have to use your mind. Her daughter, Anahyah Muldrow, is a student there and a member of the bridge club. Jackson and other parents and friends of bridge in Orange help raise funds for the annual trip to the Youth NABC. There are bake sales, candy sales, car washes and donations from local churches. The fundraising, says Jackson, is a year- round activity, but it s worth it. Bridge, she says, has given her daughter confidence. I saw a great difference in her just from bridge, says Jackson. The young players come with parents or chaperones, all of them donating Cynthia Jackson their time. They are here on a completely volunteer basis, she says. TOURNAMENT APPEALS In order to keep the bridge public informed of appeal results in a timely fashion, the NABC Daily Bulletin staff publishes write-ups. Every effort is made to ensure that these reports are accurate and complete. Before they are published in the NABC Appeals Casebook, however, revisions may be made. APPEAL CASE 3 Von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs 2nd Qualifying Session Bryan Howard Board Dlr: West K Vul: Both 10 7 A J 5 2 John Miller Michael Bodell Q J A J 7 2 Q A K J 4 3 Q Jim Foster A K 7 6 Q K West North East South Pass Pass 1 (1) Dbl 1 (2) Dbl Pass 1 Pass Pass 2 Pass 3 All Pass (1) HCP, 2+ diamonds, announced. (2) Relay to spades, not alerted. Result: 3 by East, down one, minus 100 Facts: At the end of the auction, West announced the failure to alert 1 as a relay to spades, and the director was called. South was offered a chance to change his final pass, but he declined. He further said he would not have bid 1 if he knew 1 showed spades. North said that if he had known 1 showed spades, he might have bid 2 rather than double. Director s Ruling: Three players were polled. Several auctions were discussed, including considering West s decision after 1 Dbl Pass and North s bid after 1 with the information that it showed spades. Staff found that these auctions inevitably led to either East or West being able to compete to 3. As such, the score was not adjusted; 3 would be reached via a different auction. (Laws 21C3, 40B4) The Review: N S requested a review of the ruling. They asserted that over a 1 bid showing spades, North would bid 2 to try to keep E W from finding their known (to North) diamond fit. They suggested a final contract of 2 would be reached, and that eight tricks would be scored. The Decision: The reviewer had another poll conducted. First, two players were given the North hand with the correct information. Both bid 2. Five players were given the West hand. They accepted the 1 bid (although some thought Pass to be a better choice). None bid over 2 Pass Pass. Therefore, by 21C3, 40B4, and 12C1c, the reviewer changed the contract and result to 2 by North, making two, N S plus 110. Jourdain was bridge correspondent for London s The Daily Telegraph since 1992, editor of the International Bridge Press Assocation s monthly newsletter for 20 years from 1982, and represented Wales in international competition more than 70 times between 1965 and He was also known for his gentlemanly demeanor. A friend for more than 30 years, Barry Rigal described Jourdain as genuinely nice and a suave, debonair Englishman. There are few people in bridge you can probably count them on two hands whom no one has ever heard a bad word about, Rigal said. He was a throwback to an earlier era of politeness. He would not seek to give offense to anyone. Born Nov. 1, 1942, in Woking, England, Jourdain founded a bridge club at St. Edward s School in Oxford and graduated from Peterhouse College at the University of Cambridge in Jourdain got his start in international competition when on the morning of the 1965 trials for the Welsh national bridge team, a player fell ill and Jourdain was asked to be a last-minute substitute. With only a few minutes to prepare with partner Roy Griffin, their team won the trials. Jourdain became the youngest ever to play for Wales at 23. In 1977 he left his career designing computer systems for British Steel to write about and teach bridge. When Jourdain took over the IBPA newsletter in 1982, it was assembled by photocopy and mimeograph, Rigal said, explaining Jourdain made it a professional product. He also improved conditions for bridge journalists everywhere by standing up to the WBF authorities when necessary, Rigal said. He redefined the role of the journalist in the modern era, Rigal said. He left a positive influence in everything he did. Jourdain also broke news and brought public attention for the game. He had more success than any other journalist I can think of in getting real stories about bridge into the newspapers, said Shireen Mohandes, a writer Don t wait in line! He would seek out nice plays the same way a botanist would seek rare plants. Jourdain also served bridge in administrative roles. WBF secretary Anna Gudge recalled serving as secretary for the former British Bridge League while Jourdain was its chairman. He was one of the best chairmen I ever worked with, Gudge said. He let everyone have their say but cut the waffle and then presented a clear synopsis so a decision could be made. Every secretary s dream. In 2003 he became president of IBPA and last year took up the cause of selecting Boye Brogeland personality of the year for his role in exposing cheaters, which was controversial at the time because the convictions that came this week as a result of Brogeland s accusations hadn t happened yet. He was truly doing what he thought was right, Rigal said. Jourdain had himself been named personality of the year in He also had played a key role in exposing a cheating scandal in Wales in 1999, spending months gathering evidence. As a player, Jourdain made frequent appearances in the Camrose Home Internationals, an event played by England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland. He played for Scotland for a couple of years in the 1970s and for Wales thereafter, including last year with the same team that had won the Commonwealth Nations Bridge Championship in Rigal still vividly recalls his worst loss ever in a Swiss match to Jourdain in On nine boards, one of which was passed out and another one that was decided by an overtrick, Jourdain s team won Jourdain taught more than a thousand students over the years at the Cardiff School of Bridge and also wrote several books. As recently as a month ago, Jourdain was fit enough to play golf and tennis, Rigal said, but fell ill shortly before the European Youth Pairs Championships in Latvia this month. Another friend and fellow bridge journalist, Mark Horton, found significance in Jourdain s hospital room assignment. I have no idea what the Great Shuffler has in mind for my dear friend, but when I visited him in the hospital on Tuesday, I noticed that he was located in bed number 13, Horton said. Jourdain, who never married, is survived by two sisters. the total number of sessions played after the event is over. New! Discounted junior entries accepted.

Game Sponsors and Tributes Nancy Lowry Mentor Friday-Saturday Bracketed Knockout Teams Sponsored by John Maynard To Nancy Lowry, my professor and teacher in the bridge world who took me under her wing and whose patience I ve tried on numerous occasions. Thank you. Irv Kipnis Midnight Zip Knockout Teams Sponsored by Terry Jones Irv Kipnis was my very dear friend and bridge partner. I met Irv years ago at the partnership desk in Reston where we played with a pickup team in the BAMs. Somehow, we managed to come in first place, and Irv and I became regular partners and great friends. Irv was a very kind and generous person. One time, he took me on a long ride in the country outside Hunt Valley just so that I could explore and enjoy the beautiful countryside that you don t see from the highway. Irv loved to play bridge and had several regular partners. His team made it to the Philadelphia nationals for the GNTs. I had the good fortune to be able to play with him both as a partner and against him as a fierce opponent. I definitely preferred to have him on my side! Unfortunately Irv succumbed to a heart attack on Aug. 4, 2014, leaving behind a loving family and many friends in the bridge world. Irv was a devoted husband to his wife Joyce. He is missed by so many. Other Entry Fees Players must be ACBL members whose service fees or dues are current in order to compete in any of the following nationally ranked events: Grand National Teams (Championship Flight), von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs, Spingold Knockout Teams, Wagar Women s Knockout Teams, Truscott/USPC Senior Swiss Teams, Wernher Open Pairs, Freeman Mixed Board-A-Match Teams and the Roth Open Swiss Teams. The entry fees for these contests are $25 per player per session. For team events, this means $100 per team per session for four-person teams, $125 per team per session for five-person teams, and $150 per team per session for six-person teams Note: Only ACBL members are eligible to play in NABC+ events. $1.50 per person per session benefits the International Fund. Players must also be current ACBL members to play in the Grand National Teams (Flights A, B & C), the and Mini-Spingold Knockouts, the 0-10,000 NABC Pairs, the 0-10,000 Mixed Swiss Teams, the Bruce LM-5000 Pairs, the Young Pairs and the Bean Red Ribbon Pairs. The entry fee is $17 per player per session.
