4 DOWNTOWN Downtown Indianapolis is in a renaissance with young professionals and empty-nesters migrating downtown from the suburbs. Many urban neighborhoods are being gentrified to appeal to the new downtown audience. There are several new apartment developments underway to serve this need, and overall downtown apartment and condominium occupancy is over 95%. Sports, concerts, and conferences have always been a driving force for the downtown economy with the Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium, the Pacers at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, and the Indians at Victory Field. Regional and unique local restaurants are anchoring up and coming neighborhoods - Massachusetts Ave and Fountain Square Boutique hotels such as The Alexander and the planned 21C are providing a unique experience for tourism and events. HISTORY The name, Block 20, is derived from the Indiana Plat Map which identified this site as the 20th block of the city. The Athenaeum, adjacent building to the site, was built in 1894 as a community and cultural center. Today, the Athenaeum houses the YMCA, Young Actors Theater, and The Rathskeller Restaurant. In 2015, the attendance at The Athenaeum was over 800,000. The Athenaeum is listed in three different categories in the National Registry of Historic Places for architecture and historical significance. Block 20 has worked with the Athenaeum Foundation, Lockerbie Square Neighborhood Association, and the Indianapolis Historical Preservation Commission to ensure that the development s construction and architecture fit the neighborhood s history.
