Overview For years, visitors to the waterfront in Lewiston have wondered about the huge concrete cylinder that hugged the shore bank. Little did they realize this was a monstrous relic of by-gone days when the waterfront thrived with thousands of tourists who transferred from the Great Gorge Railway that originated in Niagara Falls and boarded steamers in Lewiston that would take them to Toronto. It was a scene of great activity, the selling of souvenirs and especially fruit from the Hojack Country as this area in Niagara County was called. The demise of the Great Gorge Railway in 1938, the construction of a superhighway to Toronto, and excessive pollution strangling the river, the waterfront declined. The only activity was the piling of sand dredged from the river bottom.

The Silo was developed by the Hastings as a restaurant in 1997 and opened in spring of 1998 Source: Beginning in 1978 the waterfront had a rebirth. The village trustees purchased the land and opened it up to fishing, and a launch was put into place. Through the efforts of many municipalities the river was cleaned to the point where it attracted fishermen from all over the northeastern United States. A constant query was what should be done with the old coal silo that supplied the steamers with fuel. In the winter of 1955, The Silo held back the huge ice jam that threatened to destroy homes along the river bank. In the Spring of 1997, Mr. Richard Hastings of Youngstown approached the Village of Lewiston trustees with a plan to convert the silo into a refreshment stand or a restaurant. Encouraged by Mayor Richard Soluri and using Mr. Hastings own funds, he devised a platform which encircled the entire structure. The view of the river from this vantage point is spectacular. A cone shaped roof was placed over the whole cylinder making it similar to a giant mushroom. The huge structure that lay dormant for so many years was resurrected as a restaurant in April of 1998.
