2 2 ) ) Methodology No New Telephone Surveying Was Done Data Sources: Results from the 1998 MetroWest Jewish Community Study Results from the 2008 MetroWest Update Study US Census Counts of Distinctive Jewish Name (DJN) households in the 1998, 2008, and 2012 computerized directories by zip code for Essex, Morris, Sussex, and Union Counties DJN Counts for Somerset, Hunterdon, and Warren Counties for 2008 and 2012 Jewish Institutions Survey Jewish Federation Jewish Day Schools Synagogues JCCs ) Available at the North American Jewish Data Bank Executive Summary This Slide Set Until 2012, the Jewish Federation of MetroWest (MW) served Essex, Morris, Sussex and northern Union Counties. Until 2012, the Jewish Federation of Central New Jersey served southern Union and northern Somerset Counties. In 2012, the two Federations merged to form the Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ (GMW).

3 3 DJN Methodology & & & & Distinctive Jewish Names (DJNs) can be used to provide an historical perspective on the number of Jewish households. The 31 DJNs used: Berman, Caplan, Cohen, Epstein, Feldman, Freedman, Friedman, Goldberg, Goldman, Goldstein, Greenberg, Grossman, Jaffe, Kahn, Kaplan, Katz, Kohn, Levin, Levine, Levinson, Levy, Lieberman, Rosen, Rosenberg, Rosenthal, Rubin, Schwartz, Shapiro, Siegel, Silverman, Weinstein. Count the number of households in each geographic area with a DJN in Develop a ratio (DJN ratio) between the number of DJN households in 1998 and the number of Jewish households found by RDD in Count the number of households with a DJN in 2008 and 2012 and apply the DJN ratio to estimate the number of Jewish households in 2008 and 2012.
