5 Introduction The Santa Clara Valley's enterprising spirit and the economic diversity make it a place like no other. The entire region enjoys a high standard of living and incomparably mild weather throughout most of the year. Dynamic and booming, Santa Clara County is located at the bottom of San Francisco Bay and at the top of the high" tech world. The county population 1,736,722, is the home of the original Silicon Valley and continues to prosper, The term Silicon Valley, which refers to the area between Palo Alto and South, denotes as much a frame of mind as a geographic location. Residents live and breath high-tech. The Valley produces approximately- 26% of the nations semiconductors and related devices, which are used in everything from computers to toasters to automobiles. But high tech isn't one industry. It's many. High tech brings us , Internet browsers, PC boards, hard disc drives and laptop computers. These products, all born in the diverse, innovative, and world famous silicon Valley, have changed and enhanced business, medicine, transportation, the arts, banking, commerce, home entertainment and literally all aspects of life today. Santa Clara County has 37 school districts, 290 elementary schools, and 54 high schools. has one four year institution, State University, and two community colleges, Community College and Evergreen Valley College. 6 Communities CAMPBELL: Campbell is surrounded by on two borders. Los Gatos and Saratoga form its southwest border. Highway 880 splits the city of 39,850. CUPERTINO: This city is home to 47,650 people. Located north of Saratoga and west of, Cupertino enjoys a central location. Apple Computer and Tandem Computers, two of the county's largest employers, are located here. DeAnza College, Santa Clara County's largest community college, is also located in Cupertino. GILROY: Gilroy is synonymous with garlic in these parts. In fact, Gilroy touts itself as the garlic capital of the world, attracting more than 300,000 visitors to its annual Garlic Festival every July. The city is the largest in the south valley area with a population of 39,050 and provides an agricultural, rural setting. Gilroy is located 28 miles south of San Jose, and is close to beaches on the Pacific Ocean and Monterey Bay. LOS ALTOS: Los Altos lies just south of Palo Alto and is 20 miles north of. The community of 28,500 does not allow industry within its city limits. LOS ALTOS HILLS: Los Altos Hills is perhaps the most exclusive area in Santa Clara County, with 8,250 people. Homes here are relatively expensive, with an average price of $2.2 million. Lots require a minimum of one acre. LOS GATOS: Los Gatos a town of 10 square miles, is located on the eastern slopes of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The town is famous for its quaint and charming shops along North Santa Cruz Avenue and in the Old Town shopping area. Los Gatos (meaning "the cats" in Spanish) is home to 30,250. MILPITAS: Milpitas is the most northeast city in the county and lies next to the Alameda County line. Milpitas is home to 64,300 people, as well as many expanding Silicon Valley businesses. MONTE SERENO: Monte Sereno which means peaceful mountain, takes its name from its location at the base of El Sereno, a mountain in the Santa Cruz Mountain range. This is one of the county's smallest towns in both population (3,440) and area (1-1/2 square miles). MORGAN HILL: Morgan Hill is located south of on Highway 101. A city with a more rural flavor, its traditionally agricultural economy is giving way to services and residential construction as the city becomes home to more people (31,900) and more businesses. MOUNTAIN VIEW: Mountain View is the county's fourth largest city, with 75,200 people and is located directly south of Palo Alto. Sun Microsystems, the county's eighth largest employer, leads the list of companies located here. Shoreline Amphitheater is a popular outdoor setting for major concerts attracting world-famous performers. PALO ALTO: The county's northern most city, Palo Alto is about 30 miles south of San Francisco. The city is perhaps best known for Stanford University, founded in 1891 by railroad magnate Leland Stanford. Some 61,200 people live in Palo Alto, making it the fifth most populous city in Santa Clara County. SAN JOSE: This vibrant city of 170 square miles and 909,100 people is California's third largest city. Currently enjoying a downtown renaissance and redevelopment, this capital of Silicon Valley is home to such corporate giants as Adobe Systems and Knight-Ridder. In addition to the Arena, museums, and convention center, there is a 21-mile light rail system that is a convenient source of transportation. has experienced record business growth over the past two decades. SANTA CLARA: Santa Clara is the county's third largest city, with 102,700 people calling it home. The city is almost completely encircled by, with Sunnyvale forming its western border. Santa Clara is also home to Great America, the largest theme park in Northern California. Santa Clara University the oldest private institution one of higher learning in the state, and Mission Community College are both located here. SARATOGA: Saratoga is located on the eastern slope of the Santa Cruz Mountains and is home to 31,250 people. The Mountain Winery and Villa Montalvo offer a popular summer music series featuring jazz and pop music concerts, as well as an annual Shakespeare festival. SUNNYVALE: Sunnyvale is the county's second most populous city, with 132,900. The town is home to Lockheed Martin Missiles & Space, the county's largest employer with 16,000 workers. Amdahl, Advanced Micro Devices, and Westinghouse Electric employ thousands here as well.

7 Bay Area Weather The San Francisco Bay Area enjoys one of the mildest climates on earth, and one of the most diverse. The climate varies considerably throughout the area. Along the Pacific Ocean, fog prevails during much of the summer months because of the dry inversion of continental air currents and the moist air currents from the Pacific. As you move inward from the coast, fog disappears, in part because of warming air currents and a gradual increase in altitude. Areas east and south of San Francisco experience cooler winters and warmer summers,. The South Bay enjoys classic California weather: sunny and dry, with relatively few extremely hot or cold days. The Diablo Range on the east protects the area from California's hot interior and the Santa Cruz Mountains on the west shield it from the ocean breezes. During July, the average high is 82 degrees and the average low is 41 degrees. The area gets about three hundred clear or partly cloudy days a year. Summer temperatures in the nineties are not uncommon in southern Santa Clara County. Precipitation in Santa Clara County primarily occurs between November and March, the wettest months being December and January. A few showers are reported during the remaining months but are light and inconsistent. Rainfall is heavier the closer you are to the Santa Cruz Mountains. Whereas averages fourteen inches per year, Saratoga receives nearly thirty. Just when you get lulled by the sameness of the weather, it changes. Yet, as with California in general, there really is no better place to be.
