The Manassas Museum The Manassas Museum System 9101 Prince William Street Manassas, Virginia p (703) /f (703) www. manassasmuseum.org Built The Manassas In 1973 the Town of Manassas commemorated the community s 100th anniversary with a Centennial Celebration. Mrs. Walser Conner Rohr, a well-known civic leader, suggested a temporary exhibit of historical objects in order to reflect upon the development of the community. The space above Hynson s Department Store on the southwest corner of Main and Center Streets was selected. During a six week period more than 600 visitors paid 50 cents each to see the exhibition and learn about Manassas history. The temporary exhibit was so popular there was a community-wide call for a permanent museum. The Manassas Historical Commission (now known as the Manassas Historic Resources Board) was formed to find an appropriate location. The old National Bank building at 9406 Main Street was selected. Built in 1896, it had been used as a law office, laundromat, and an art store. A group of energetic supporters In 1973, a temporary Museum exhibit was established to commemorate the Manassas Centennial Celebration Public response to the Centennial exhibition led to the opening of The Manassas Museum in the old National Bank building on Main Street on November 6, 1974 The Museum was officially dedicated on May 21, 1976 as part of the community s celebration of the American Bicentennial The Museum became a department of the City of Manassas and the first permanent staff person was hired in 1982

A Museum System is created with the addition of the Mayfield Fort Site in 1985 In 1986, Liberia, an 1825 Plantation House located on Mathis Avenue, is donated to the Museum System by Mr. & Mrs. I. J. Breeden The Old Town Hall is used as a Museum collection storage and exhibition center The Manassas Industrial School & Jennie Dean Memorial, located on Wellington Road, becomes part of The Manassas Museum System in 1989 The original Museum site in the Old Bank building closes as the staff prepares to open the new location on Prince William Street from its temporary location in the Old Town Hall building The Museum reopens in the new facility on Prince William Street on February 2, 1991 The Cannon Branch Fort site becomes part of The Manassas Museum System in 1994 The rehabilitated 1914 Southern Railway Station becomes part of The Manassas Museum System in 1997 The 1907 Hopkins Candy Factory becomes part of The Manassas Museum System in 1998 and is renovated in served on a Museum Committee, and over the next year obtained exhibit cases; painted, cleaned, and carpeted the building; and worked diligently to create a museum. Objects were accepted and exhibits were planned. On November 6, 1974 The Manassas Museum opened to the public. The Curator, Edgar Ren Conner III, along with members of the Museum Committee, volunteered his time to operate the Museum. Initially, the Museum was open weekends with volunteers staffing the front desk. The official dedication of the Museum occurred on May 21, 1976 during the Town s celebration of the American Bicentennial. In 1982 Douglas K. Harvey, a professionally trained Curator, was hired and the Museum became a department of the City of Manassas, receiving an annual operating budget and support services. Volunteers continued to assist with the operation of the Museum while other permanent staff members were added. As the collection, exhibits, and staff grew, a larger building was needed. Members of the City Council and Museum Committee spent several months evaluating existing structures and reviewing the recommendations from consulting firms and the Smithsonian Institution. On June 25, 1987, the City Council voted to build a new museum in Baldwin Park on Prince William Street. Architect Carlton Abbott, of Carlton Abbott and Partners, Williamsburg, Virginia, was chosen to design the new 6,000 square foot museum. The Museum opened to the public on February 2, In 1998, Mrs. Mae S. Merchant established two charitable trusts to benefit the Museum System. Over the next 30 years, approximately $2.7 million dollars will be generated by the trusts. The trust income will be used to fund: the fort restoration projects at Mayfield and Cannon Branch and support the planned expansion of the Museum building. The Museum is currently selecting an architectural firm to design the planned expansion and construction is projected for The Museum expansion will provide: two changing exhibition galleries; a hands-on children s discovery gallery; curatorial work spaces; collection storerooms; research library; exhibition preparation area; loading dock; and public program space. In 1998, Mae S. Merchant establishes two charitable trusts to provide 2.7 million to benefit the expansion of the Museum

The Hopkins Candy Factory The Manassas Museum System 9416 Battle Street Manassas, Virginia Circa The Hopkins Candy Factory In May 1900, C. A. S. Hopkins, a native of Ohio, founded the Hopkins Candy Factory and began producing candies in a frame building on West Street, in downtown Manassas. In their modest 16 X 20 foot factory 25 employees made a sweet assortment of stick candy, rock candy, and their famous peanut bars and coconut bars. Salesman traveled by train and wagon toting sample cases of wholesale sweet confections to general stores throughout the region. The high quality yet inexpensive candy quickly became a regional favorite and the business flourished. However, a devastating fire nearly destroyed the thriving business in December, Spared from destruction, the enterprising businessman seized the opportunity to purchase a burnt-out lot along the railroad tracks on Battle Street. Here Hopkins would build a new modern factory designed by Manassas Architect Albert Speiden. C. A. S. Hopkins established the Hopkins Candy Factory in Manassas in 1900 The December 1905 fire in downtown Manassas nearly destroyed the wood frame candy factory Hopkins purchased one of the lots destroyed by the 1905 fire to become the site of a new modern candy factory Albert Speiden, a Manassas architect, was selected to design the three-story factory building

The Hopkins Candy Company relocated into the new factory building in February 1908 The new factory featured modern candy making equipment Five to ten tons of candy was shipped daily from the factory at its peak of operation The candy factory shipped to every state east of the Mississippi River by 1911 In 1911, the candy company began selling stock to gain capital for an expansion Sometime before 1917 the Candy Factory closed and the building was converted into a feed and flour mill operated by the Manassas Feed and Milling Company Southern States purchased the building in the sraly 1930s and made several additions to the building In 1911, the candy company began selling stock to gain capital for an expansion The Merchants purchase the building to use as a tire warehouse and eventually donated it to the City of Manassas in 1988 to be restored and turned into a Center for the Arts The new factory featured modern candy making equipment The Manassas Museum System was placed in managing the restoration and long term perservation of the building in 1988 Work on the factory began in earnest in 1907 and the company moved into the four-story brick structure in February 1908, Newspapers reported that it was one of the most modern of the day. The structure houses both power and water systems, and was fitted with enrobbing machines, to produce machine dipped chocolates:, as well as, equipment to produce a new line of creams, drops, and fancy crysastallized jellies. The company continued to produce stick candy, hard candy, rock candy, and their famous peanut bar and coconut bar. The company also produced a premium line of hand-dipped chocolates marketed as the Robert E. Lee or Eastern Star selection. By the end of the year the company had 10 salesmen serving every state east of the Mississippi and the factory shipped 5 to 10 tons of candy daily. In just ten short years the company had grown from its original 16 by 20 foot workroom to a 40 by 100 foot modern three story factory. Yet despite of this success the Hopkins Brothers still had dream s of further expansion. To finance the plan the company began to sell stock. The Manassas Journal would record in May 1911, the company s capital had increased to $75,000. It appears in February 1914 a syndicate of stockholders gained operating control but the never flourished under their management. Sometime, before 1917, the company closed and the building was sold. Over the next few decades the Candy Factory building would adapted to support the requirements of several different businesses. It was first converted into the Manassas Feed and Milling Company. Much of the exterior advertisements remaining on the brick walls dates from this period. The building was then sold to Southern States Manassas Cooperative in the 1930s. During this period further modifications were made to the building including the construction of three large concrete silos which once stood on the northeast corner of the building. In June of 1980, Southern States sold the building to Canton and Mae Merchant who used the building as a tire warehouse. Understanding the structures significance to the community s revitalization of the historic district, the Merchant family donated the building to the City of Manassas in Restoration of the structure Began in August of 2001 under the direction of the Manassas Museum System. On October 25, 2002 the renovated building was leased to the Center for the Arts of Greater Manassas. Today the Center includes an art gallery, theater, and studio classroom facilities and is the centerpiece of Manassas growing art community. The restoration of the building began in August 2001 and was completed in October, 2002 and is now the home of the Center fort the Arts of Greater Manassas

Liberia Plantation House The Manassas Museum System Portner Avenue Manassas, Virginia Circa Liberia Plantation The story of Liberia begins with John Carter who boarded the ship Safety and set sail from London on August 10, 1649 for the shores of Virginia. John Carter was but 22 years old when he landed in Virginia and obtained his first patent for 1300 acres on the Rappahannock River in what became Lancaster County. John prospered in Virginia and was twice elected to the House of Burgesses and served as the Governor s Council until his death. He would marry five times and had six children. After his first son, John II, died in 1693, John passed on the dynasty to Robert Carter, the son of John s fourth wife Sarah Ludlow. Robert continued to strengthen the Carter holdings in Virginia. Robert settled in Corotoman, the plantation built by his father, and branched out into banking, commerce, farming, land acquisition, copper mining and the buying and selling of slaves. During his lifetime he would marry twice and raise 15 children, all of whom married into many of the prominent families of Virginia. One of the few plantation houses to remain standing after the battles of 1st and 2nd Manassas Served as the headquarters of the Confederate Gen. P. G. T. Beauregard Served as the headquarters for Union Gen. McDowell before the Battle of 2nd Manassas President Abraham Lincoln visited Liberia to confer with his generals in the months before the battle of Second Manassas Used as a hospital and death house for both armies

The Weir family fled Liberia as Gen. Beauregard, CSA prepares the fortification of Manassas Junction Gen. Beauregard, CSA establishes his headquarters at Liberia in June and July 1861 Liberia serves as a hospital and death house in the days following the Battle of First Manassas. President Lincoln visits Gen. McDowell, USA at his headquarters at Liberia The Weir family returns to Liberia after the Civil War but is unable to return the plantation to its former grandeur In 1888, the Robert Weir sold Liberia to Robert Portner who turns it into a successful dairy farm I. J. Breeden purchased Liberia in 1947 In 1979, Liberia is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register December 31, 1986 the Breeden family donated Liberia and 5.6 acres surrounding the house The City of Manassas purchased 12.6 additional acres from the Breeden family to buffer Liberia from future development In 1986 Liberia became part of the Manassas Museum System In his own time Robert, not always affectionately called King Carter, became the wealthiest, and perhaps the most influential Virginian of his time. At his death in 1732, he left 330,000 acres of land and estate inventory that took 65 pages to list the books, furnishings, silver, livestock, and slaves he had amassed. The 1,660 acre parcel of the Lower Bull Run Tract passed to his second son Robert II, which through his daughter Priscilla Mitchell, was eventually given to her daughter, Harriett Bladen Mitchell in Harriett and her husband William James Weir built an architecturally distinctive five bay brick house that integrated Georgian, and Federal design components. Often referred to by the family as the Brick House, the structure also became known as Liberia. When the Civil War erupted in 1861, the Weir sons enlisted in the Confederate Army and William remained to operate the plantation. From July 17 until October the house served as the headquarters for Gen. P. G. T. Beauregard, CSA and some reports also record its use as a hospital and death house. After the Battle of First Manassas, it is thought that President Jefferson Davis gathered his generals and made the fateful decision not to pursue Union troops on the evening of July 21 and that it was here that Davis awarded Gen. Beauregard a battlefield promotion on July 22, A year later, William fled Liberia, in advance of General McDowell, USA, leaving trusted slaves to pack up the family belongings and to protect the house. Gen. McDowell would occupy the house in March of 1862 and used it as a military headquarters, It was during this period that President Abraham Lincoln came to Liberia to confer with his generals in the months before the Battle of Second Manassas. By the end of the Civil War, Liberia was the only significant structure to remain standing on the plains of Manassas. It was to this devastated landscape that the Weir family returned to farm their holdings. Despite the family s labor, they were unable to return the plantation to its former grandeur. In 1888, the Robert Weir sold the property to Robert Portner, a wealthy brewer, banker, and shipper. The Portner s never lived at Liberia, however, they developed the property into a successful dairy operation. During their ownership several farm structures were added to the site, none of which remain today. The Portner family kept Liberia until 1947 when they sold it to the Breeden family. On December 31, 1986, I. J. and Hilda Breeden donated Liberia and 5.6 acres of land surrounding the house. In an agreement with the Breeden family, the City purchased an additional 12.6 acres to buffer the site from future development and placed the combined property under the authority of the Manassas Museum System.

MIS/Jennie Dean Memorial The Manassas Museum System 9431 West Street Manassas, Virginia Cir- Southern Railway Headquarters of Historic Manassas, Inc. The present day Southern Railroad Depot is located on the old Orange & Alexandria line, Virginia s first railroad constructed in the 1850s. Originating in Alexandria the line ran through Manassas, and ended at Gordansville. The present day depot is far more elaborate than the small log building that served as both the railroad depot and post office for the community. The original structure was located east of the present depot site and on the opposite side of the tracks. William Brawner served as the first railroad agent and postmaster. It is likely that the log depot was destroyed sometime during the Civil War. The Richmond & Danville Railroad Co. purchased controlling interest in the Orange & Alexandria line in 1886 and constructed a wood frame structure upon the site of the present day depot. As the town grew the old frame depot was dismantled and replaced by a brick passenger depot in The present day Southern Railroad Depot is located on the old Orange & Alexandria line, the first railroad constructed in Virginia. A small log building served as the first railroad depot and post office for the community. The first log cabin depot was destroyed by the military sometime during the Civil War. The Richmond & Danville Railroad Company built a wooden depot in Manassas in the late 1880s on the site of the present day depot.

In 1904 a new brick depot was built only to be destroyed by fire in 1914 The present depot was completed in October of 1914 incorporating part of the ruins of the 1904 depot The 1914 depot was awarded the Virginia Historic Landmark and National Historic Landmark status in 1980 The depot was acquired by the City of Manassas from the Norfolk Southern Railway Company and placed under the stewardship of the Manassas Museum System The Museum opens the James & Marion Payne Gallery within the restored depot to celebrate Manassas rich railroad heritage. The railroad depot serves over 80,000 commuters on the VRE and Amtrak railroad annually and houses the offices of Historic Manassas, Inc. and the Manassas Visitor Center. On June 25, 1914 a fire broke out in the baggage room of the depot and the flames gutted the building leaving only the foundation and walls. Work on the third and present depot was completed in October The structure partially incorporated the walls of the burnt depot, which measured about 20 feet by 77 feet, and had four rooms: an office, a ladies waiting room, men s waiting room, as well as, a baggage and express room. The new structure is about 30 feet longer than the earlier one permitting a modified room arrangement and included the addition of an umbrella shed on the front and east side, the installation of electric lights and an attractive tile roof. In the 1980s the depot began to fall into disrepair and slated for abandonment by its owner, Norfolk Southern Railway Company. Not wanting to see this landmark building lost, the City of Manassas acquired the structure and began its restoration as part of a Main Street revitalization effort. Renovation of the structure began in the 1990s and the under the stewardship of The Manassas Museum System. Once restored the structure opened to the public in 1997 and houses the offices of Historic Manassas, Inc.; the Manassas Tourist Information Center; the James and Marion Payne Memorial Railroad Exhibition Gallery, an annex of the Manassas Museum System. In addition, the structure serves hundreds of passengers daily as a waiting lounge for the Virginia Railway Express and Amtrak train service.
