5 COMMUNITY PROFILE Prince George s County is a vibrant and prosperous community with a rich heritage and even richer future. Prince George s County is located in central Maryland and borders our Nations Capital to the east. Encompassing almost 500 square miles of land and water, Prince George s County is filled with acres of award winning parks, recreational facilities, and historic sites. With more than 750,000 residents, the county has a population greater than that of 5 states and more than 800 people move here each week to access the many professional and employment opportunities. Officially established in 1696 after heavy exploration by Captain John Smith and settlers from England and continental Europe, Prince George s County quickly became the jewel of the new world. Named for Prince George of Denmark, the counties vast wilderness provided lumber while many of its navigable rivers such as the Potomac and Patuxent, as well as the Chesapeake Bay, offered shipping and trading opportunities. Although many of the of the original Prince George s establishments remained small, Upper Marlboro and Bladensburg grew into major centers of political activity, commerce, and culture. It was from the northwest corner of expansive Prince George s County that a portion of land was ceded by Maryland to the federal government to establish Washington, D.C., and now as then, many of the residents owe their livelihood to positions of national and international significance. Every generation in Prince George s County for the past 300 years has produced men and women who, through dedication, intelligence, and sheer determination, have established themselves as the pioneers in every walk of life including military command and politics, air and space flight, farming and commerce, as well as the clergy.
