3 Welcome Welcome to the Neighborhood Omaha is located on the Missouri River in the state of Nebraska. It is the county seat and largest city in Douglas County. It is the state's most populous county, home to over one-fourth of Nebraska's residents. The county was established in 1854 and named after Stephen A. Douglas, a U.S. Senator from Illinois. Omaha is the anchor of the Omaha-Council Bluffs Metropolitan Area, which includes Council Bluffs, Iowa, across the Missouri River from Omaha which marks the Iowa stateline.
