2 DETROIT GLE-2007 MODEL CONTEST This is the third comprehensive photo coverage of a model contest at a national convention. You will notice that I have skipped the 2006 Philly convention which will become available in the nearfuture. As with the Cincinnati contest, this volume is broken up into two main parts. Rolling Stock covers anything on wheels. Structures & Displays which as the name implies covers those two topics and the Display-Only (nonjudged) category. As with the previous contest installments, at least one photo, and very often many photos, of each model appears under the text information box to show each model s detailing to its best advantage. A sample of the listing format is shown in the box at the bottom of this page. This was a huge amount of work but was done to better show the modeling community, & the general public, what the AP scoring was on each of the models in this contest. It is also a way to show that more than just a small handful of models are entered in a contest as in the past, only the winners of a contest have been displayed, whereas there have always been many more entries. At Cincinnati I had taken over 1500 photos between the contest room & the Train Show. This year over 1200 photos were shot in the contest room alone using two cameras. With this many photos to draw from it can easily be seen that most of the models have many views available and I have picked the photos that do the best job of showcasing each modeler s workmanship. I hope some of you who are viewing this Photo Book will be encouraged to enter future contests in your area. All Photos taken by SouthErneR Editor Paul V. Voelker except as noted. 30 Southern Pacific s Train Ferry Steamship SOLANO 30 Great Lakes Express Model Contest Photo Book

31 The SOLANO & FERRY SLIP at PORT COSTA, CA This working model of a train ferry and ferry slip was displayed in the contest room during the Great Lakes Express 2007 national convention in Detroit this past July. The ferry slip models Port Costa, CA and the ferry models the Southern Pacific s train ferry Solano which ran between Port Costa in Contra Costa County and Benicia in Solano County through the Straits of Carquinez. In 1905 the steamship Solano was billed as the Largest Ferryboat in the World which isn t surprising as she was 424 feet long, almost 117 feet wide and displaced 3,549 tons! She was built in In the views at left & right we can see that two complete passenger trains and their motive power could be accommodated onboard this ferry with room to spare. The model has wheels underneath it which allow it to enter and exit the ferry slip on its own power. The apron is also powered and can be raised or lowered as needed to mate the dock to the ferry just as on the real ferry slip. The raising and lowering mechanism is concealed within the two towers on either side of the slip. Trains can then be loaded or unloaded in a prototypical fashion. [The apron s underside can be seen in the bottom left photo on this page.] The view above shows the blocking supports where the apron mates to the ship. Judging by the underwater shape of the hull, she appears to be constructed like a powered barge. Because of the shallow draft of the ship, there is no room for a large rudder so presumably it is necessary to use multiple smaller rudders (in this case 4 on each end) to get the required surface area to be able to steer the ship effectively. The two views at right show the ship s bridge (one at each end) from where the ship is conned or controlled. Looking below the pier and through the pilings, you can see the steel Bow Truss deck bridge that supports the 4 track Apron used to load and unload the ferry. The apron on this model raises and lowers automatically. Great Lakes Express Model Contest Photo Book 31

32 The objects circled in the above photo are navigation lights that are required on all vessels. The lights on the sides are colored with the left side being red and the right side being green. All other navigation lights on a vessel are white. At night when approaching a vessel, the different colors of the lights will tell you which direction that vessel is headed so you know where you need to be to avoid accidentally colliding with it. However here we have a bidirectional train ferry which means that either end can be the bow (front), so in this case there are both red & green lights on each side so in whichever direction the ship is headed, the correct lighting pattern can be used. You will notice that each pair of lights is centered over the paddle wheel on that side and that each paddle wheel appears to be located asymmetrically on each side of the hull. Due to the walking beam design of the engines, and the fact that they need to be located on the centerline of the ship so that the railroad tracks can pass on either side, the paddle wheels have to be staggered on each side of the hull. The drawing shown below explains the situation with one paddle being forward of the other and not symmetrically located on each side. Views above and below show how little deck space is available over the hull proper for anything other than the four tracks. The steam cylinders and their walking beams consume most of the space amidships and boilers & fuel would consume most of the space below decks leaving almost nothing for crew & passenger accommodations. The cabins located along the outside edges of the deck are cantilevered out from the hull on either side both fore and aft of the large paddle wheels. The end view on page 7 shows just how far out from the hull this cantilevered section extends. Obviously this would be a bit of a problem for a seagoing ship but this one spent its life in sheltered waters. In the view below, the wood blocks lying on top of the rails are end bumpers that would be chained to the deck at the end of each set of rails to keep cars and locomotives from running off the end of the ship.
