4 Welcome Welcome to the Neighborhood St. Louis County is located in the far eastern part of the state of Missouri, with the county seat being the city of Clayton. It is bound by the city of St. Louis and the Mississippi River to the east, the Missouri River to the north, and the Meramec River to the south and is the most populous county in the state. St. Louis County was first settled by French colonists in the late 1700s, before switching to U.S. rule following the Louisiana Purchase. The county split from St. Louis City in St. Louis County borders, but does not include, the city of St. Louis, which is its own independent city, but the county is included in the St. Louis, MO-IL Metropolitan Statistical Area.
