1 S W I M M I N G WILDCATS GET READY TO HOST IN- STATE RIVAL LOUISVILLE Fresh off a dominating performance last weekend against Alabama the Kentucky swimming and diving teams host Louisville this weekend at the Lancaster Aquatic Center for their last home meet of the season. Last time out the Wildcats took control early and put together an impressive performance in the dual meet with the Crimson Tide. Both the men s and women s 200- medley relay teams put together wins. The men s team touched the wall almost two seconds before Alabama while the women s team finished over a second better. Kentucky sealed the dual meet victory with several one-two-three finishes in the 100-freestyle and 100-butterfly. This will be the last competition at home for Kentucky s senior class. So far this season the Wildcats have won two out of the four dual meets that Kentucky has hosted this season. The senior class on the men s side have five key members, James Batley, Matt Bierwirth, Shane Eliason, Joe Retrum and Justin Smith. The women s side is lead by four swimmers in Leah Harmes, Haleigh Kerns, Kelly Rames and Kristina Sledge. Kentucky s next meet will be on Jan. 31 when the two teams travel to Cincinnati to face the Bearcats for the final dual meet action of the season. UK will begin preparing for the SEC Championships and a run at the NCAAs in the weeks to come. 2 Cats One-Two-Three Kentucky has recently had a string of success in having members finish first, second and third in events. In the last meet against Alabama the Wildcats finished one-two-three four times with the women claiming one sweep and the men claiming three sweeps. The women s sweep was in the 200- freestyle where Casey Miller, Kayla Sergesketter and Haleigh Kerns took the top three sports respectfully. The men s sweeps came in the 50-freestyle, 100-freestyle and the 100- butterfly. Alex Forbes, Colin Faris and Eric McGinnis took the top- three spots in the 50-freestyle. Forbes and McGinnis were also in the UK sweep of the 100-freestyle finishing onetwo respectfully with Kyle Greene in the third spot. The final UK sweep was in the 100-butterfly where Elvis Burrows took first place, Travis Muzzillo second and Joe Returm third. Wildcats beat Bama at Home The University of Kentucky swimming and diving teams dominated visiting Alabama in a dual meet at Lancaster Aquatic Center in mid January. The Wildcat women earned a victory, while the UK men clipped Alabama by a margin. To open the meet the Wildcats got things started with a bang capturing both 200-medley relays. The women began with sophomore Chatham Penrod, sophomore Lindsey Graessle, junior Megan Pulskamp and sophomore Jenna Newsome finishing in a time of 1: The Blue and White came in nearly a full second ahead of the Crimson Tide. Kentucky's men followed suit with a dominating performance in the 200-medley relay. Senior Shane Eliason took the backstroke leg, followed by junior Eric McGinnis in the breaststroke, junior Elvis Burrows in the butterfly and junior Alex Forbes anchoring the freestyle leg. The quartet clocked in with a time of 1:30.51, two seconds ahead of the visitors. Snowden Named SEC Diver of the Week Sophomore diver Jessie Snowden was tabbed the SEC Diver of the Week on January 13 following two terrific meets. The sophomore captured a win on the one-meter board in the upset victory over Missouri for the Wildcats.She was also a double-winner for Kentucky against SEC-opponent LSU earlier in the week. Snowden took top honors on both spring boards in Baton Rouge, including etching a season-best clip of in her win on the one-meter. Jenna Makes the News Sophomore Jenna Newsome had a breakout performance in UK s victory over Missouri. She captured both the 50- and 100-free sprint events in UK s victory over the Tigers. Her time in her win in the 100-free was a season-best clip. McGinnis-Forbes Ticket Juniors Eric McGinnis and Alex Forbes are combining to form an unstoppable tandem in the sprint freestyle races. McGinnis and Forbes finished one-and-two in the 50-free and 100- free in both meets against LSU and Missouri. Upset Central The men earned a dramatic come-from-behind victory over top-20 ranked Missouri in Fayetteville, Ark. In order for the Wildcats to pull off the upset they needed to finish 1-2 in both the individual medley and freestyle relay to end the meet. Led by Shane Eliason s top finish in the individual medley and then a dominating performance by the 200-free relay squad the Blue and White pulled off the upset. Retrum Strong in Final Fall Meet Senior Joe Retrum finished the fall portion of his senior season with a great finish at the Tennessee Invitational. Retrum erupted for second place in the 200-fly with a career-best time of 1:47.96, bettering his previous time by more than two seconds. Additionally, Retrum's time meets the NCAA B qualifying standard for Racing Puls-kamp Junior Megan Pulskamp wrapped up the 2008 part of her season with a strong showing at the Tennessee Invitational. Pulskamp finished with three second-place finishes at the invitational. The first one came in the 50-freestyle where she posted a career-best time of beating her old time of She also finished second in the 200-butterfly and joined with three other teammates posted a second-place and career-best finish in the 200-freestyle relay. Pulskamp also had a great opening meet at Indiana starting her season with one first-place finish and four top two finishes. She finished first in the 100-butterfly with a time of Her secondplace finishes came in the 200-butterfly and as a member of the 200-medley relay and 400-freestyle relay teams. Cats Get First Win in the Pool The Kentucky Men s and Women Swimming and Diving teams claimed their first win of the season recently against IUPUI. The women were led by a one-two-three finish in the 50-backstroke, 50-breaststroke, 50-freestyle, 50-butterfly and 100-individual medley. They also notched first-place finishes in the 200-medley relay, with a team of Chatham Penrod, Lindsey Graessle, Pulskamp and Kelsie Hall and the 200-freestyle relay led by Hall, Chelsea Peterson, Kayla Sergesketter and Pulskamp. The men also had a strong showing against the Jaguars. The Wildcats sweep first, second and third-place in three events, the 50-breaststroke, 100-butterfly and 100- freestyle. They also recorded first and second-place finishes in the 50-backstroke, 50-freestyle, 100-backstroke and 100- breaststroke. Junior Eric McGinnis had two first-place finishes while juniors Kyle Greene and Julio Vallette, senior James Batley and sophomores Colin Faris and Tyler Reed had the other The Incredible Hoff Freshman Morne' Boshoff shined for the Kentucky men during the Tennessee met, as the first year athlete claimed the top spot in three events the 1000 and 500-freestyle and the 400- individual medley races for his first wins of his career. Boshoff beat the field with a 9:30.71 time in the 1000-free to begin the meet. He then bested the field by nearly two seconds with a time of 4:39.81 in the 500-free. In the 400-IM Boshoff was the top Wildcat finisher with a time of 4:09.02 for his third win

3 of the day.first-place finishes. Eliason Off to Quick Start Swimmer Shane Eliason is off to a quick start in his last year as a Wildcat. In the opening meet of the season he posted a first place time in the 100-backstroke and was a member of the 200-medley relay and 400-freestyle relay that finished at the top of the leaderboard. Kentucky Relay Team s Kicking Water and Taking Names The Kentucky relays teams put up impressive numbers in their first meet of the year. The men s team swept the relay competition by placing first in the 200-medley relay and 400- freestyle relay. The 200-medley relay team of Shane Eliason, Grant Cooksey, Elvis Burrows and Eric McGinnis posted a time of 1: The 400-freestyle team of Eliason, McGinnis, Tyler Reed and Kyle Greene had a time of 3: The Women s team placed second in the 200-medley and 400- freestyle relay. Megan Pulskamp, Claire Archibald, Lindsey Graessle and Kelsi Hall posted a time of 1:44.34 in the 200- medley relay. Also, Hall, Kayla Sergesketter, Mandy Myers and Pulskamp recorded a time of 3:29.72 in the 400-freestyle relay.
