1 February 10, 2017 Volume 5 Issue 2 The Community Development Department sponsored and exhibited at the 2017 Birding and Wildlife Festival held at Eastern Florida State College Titusville Campus January 25-30, It was the Festivals 20 th year SPACE COAST BIRDING & WILDLIFE FESTIVAL Presented by Dixie Crossroads Seafood Restaurant SUMMARY AND STATISTICAL INFORMATION 36 Sponsors THANK YOU!!! 30 Key Partners THANK YOU!!! 298 Activities available to attendees included: Exhibits, Art Show & Competition, Silent Auction, Afternoon Socials, Raptor Project, Birding and Wildlife Field Trips and Classroom Presentations, Keynotes, Photo Classroom and Field Workshops, Optics Classroom and Field Workshops. Festival attendees also participated in cla ssroom and field activities at the Enchanted Forest, Merritt Island & Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuges, multi -subject field workshops at Canaveral National Seashore, Brevard County Parks & Recreation sites, several of the Environmentally Endangered Lands Sanctuary s and select properties opened for this Festival on lands protected by the St. Johns River Water Management District and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. 3,760 Registrations were generated by 1,316 attendees to participate in specific activities of the 2016 SCBWF. 37 persons paid at the door to access certain classroom presentations and one Keynote presentation. 26 persons participated in Oyster Mat Making Workshop on Saturday 119 Field Trip Leaders/Speakers provided their time, talent and effort to bring quality information and field trip excitement to each participant who went by bus or car pool. 24 Photographers provided 92 opportunities to 463 registered, eager participants. Learning experiences ra nged from classroom presentations on how to use and feel comfortable with your camera, to improve photography skills, to advanced techniques and THEN, field workshops with hands-on functions to help capture the essence and thrill of creating a lasting image with historical and emotional value. 108 Adult Artists entered paintings, photographs, pottery, carvings and freestyle items for the Art Competition and 65 students entered the Poster Competition. The Art Show was sponsored by GEOMAR Environmental Consultants. Presented by the Titusville Art League, over $1,800 in prizes and gift certificates were awarded. 72 Businesses/Organizations filled 79 Exhibit booths (Additional booth workers who helped = 161) 77 Volunteers + Brevard Nature Alliance Board members & staff helped to make each Festival Attendee feel welcome! 678 others visited the Exhibit Center, Art Show & Competition and Silent Auction many came specifically to participate in the thrilling Raptor Project presentations sponsored by Florida Power & Light Corporation. 5 On December 20, 2016 the crew of Engine 10, Lieutenant EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH Callahan, Acting Driver/Operator s Wiegert and Johnson, responded to a call where a firearm was accidently discharged. The patient was in a critical state when they arrived on scene, losing blood at a life-threating rate. The patient had a femoral arterial bleed, which prevented them from placing a life-saving tourniquet on the injury, forcing the crew to manually maintain direct pressure and stabilize the patient until they could reach more definitive care. On January 30 th and 31 st, Titusville police officers completed a Patrol Rifle Operator class.

Student officers had to pass a written exam and a qualification course prior to being issued their rifles.

So far, a total of 25 Officers have completed the class. North Brevard S.A.L.

Chief John Hustoles and Chief Greg Sutton became the first in Brevard County to complete the Handtevy Pre- Hospital Pediatric Instructor Course.

Unlike with adults, pediatric patients require medication administration solely based on weight, creating a need to calculate dosages in real time.

6 On January 30 th and 31 st, Titusville police officers completed a Patrol Rifle Operator class. The class taught shooting fundamentals, shooting from various positions, and shooting at varying distances out to 200 yards. Student officers had to pass a written exam and a qualification course prior to being issued their rifles. The Patrol Rifle program is an initiative by Chief Lau to place the appropriate tools in the hands of the first responders on patrol every day and every night. So far, a total of 25 Officers have completed the class. North Brevard S.A.L.T (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together) and Brevard County TRIAD members met at the Titusville Police Department to sort Valentine cards, handmade by local schoolchildren, for distribution to residents at the local nursing homes and rehabilitation centers. Titusville Fire will soon be implementing a new way of providing emergency medical care to our pediatric population, utilizing the Handtevy System. "Treating pediatric patients is one of the most stressful calls our personnel deal with. Unlike with adults, pediatric patients require medication administration solely based on weight, creating a need to calculate dosages in real time. The Handtevy System streamlines this process by eliminating time previously spent calculating drug dosages", says Battalion Chief of EMS John Hustoles. Titusville Fire is striving to enhance the service to the visitors and citizens of our community.
