2 From the Super June 2018 Phil is away sailing, not sailing away. So, Some random thoughts from your secretary/ dispatcher. It s hot! An extended heat wave - in the Metro area and Up-North. 93 degrees at the Lake - Ime to retreat inside and work on the layout! But many of you are or will be traveling - don t forget to keep the smart phone or camera handy - you never know when an ideal railfan shot will present itself. And even if you don t leave home, you can sill railfan in numerous ways. The pages of the NMRA Magazine, Model Railroader or a favorite video carry you to places you may never get to visit in person (or re-live a favorite scene from last week or many years ago). If you subscribe to Model Railroader and/or Trains, you can watch live acion on the Rochelle, Illinois, webcam. (trn.trains.com) then click on Photos and Videos and look for the webcam info. The camera works 24/7 (can t see much auer dark!) and shows the crossing of the Union Pacific and Burlington Northern Santa Fe. Do those dispatchers stay busy throwing lots of unit container, trailer and oil trains, and mixed freights through that liyle town! I am including some photos of Rochelle by our friend Rich Mahaney (thanks, Rich). For one modeler s perspecive of Rochelle in two different layouts, look up aricles by Daryl Kruse in Model Railroader, November 2008 and September 2016, and in Model Railroad Planning The Trains website also includes a webcam of the Roanoke, VA staion with a lot of acion. In your travels, take photos and submit them with capions or even an aricle for future issues of the Car House. If you enjoyed being there, we will enjoy viewing the results of your adventures. For those who have been to recent convenions in Grand Rapids, you probably have visited, maybe even operated on the Arcadia & Betsey River. Skip is a Master Model Railroader, North Central Region Achievement Program chairman and a gracious host. Finally, have a great Fourth of July celebraion - not just on the 4th, but all weekend and month long. See you all on July 19th for our monthly meeing. 4 JUNE SHOW & TELL Theme: Cabooses, Oil or Ethanol Tank Cars, or a Current Project The Second Lives of Cabooses Ken Chick displayed his Danforth Hadley & Northern caboose, detailed with complete interior, new windows and weathered. Tim Fisher demonstrated his backdrop system, consisting of 2 & 3 (by 50 ) coiled aluminum strip. Be sure to wear leather gloves! Fred Cosgrove brought two Chicago, South Shore and South Bend brass cabooses, a 25 footer and a 29 footer. John Gavasso brought his Athern caboose decorated for the Grand Trunk Western, with added detailing Phil Doolittle built a portable control toolbox for FREEMO modular set-ups - includes power supply, 2 boosters, computer interface - designed for plug & play at FREEMO meets. Phil Kenyon showed his N scale Western Maryland caboose from Walthers 4 of 8

5 Richard Kubeck demonstrated the new Woodland Scenics sequencing hub, some terminal strips and his model of a 14-unit tank train, which is unloaded endto-end in 6 hours (28,000 gallons/each) Dave Thornton modified three O-scale 3 bay B&O hoppers from three different manufacturers (one car pictured) Larry Wolohon brought his RY Models O-scale tank car Greg Rich scratch-built the 30 sailing sloop Oliver from paper & wood, including cast people, cargo & blocks. Jim Zinser displayed his Hercules Powder Company tanker - that supplied Copper Country mines with explosives Paul Runyan displayed his Cargill 18,000 gallon corn syrup tanker from Intermountain MMRs at the June meeting: Ken Chick, Larry Wolohon & Jim Zinser. 6 THE CABOOSE CHALLENGE - THE SECOND LIVES OF CABOOSES Rich Mahaney, our clinic presenter, challenged the Region to build dioramas depicting varied uses of cabooses no longer in railroad service. He showed a short slide demonstration of cabooses across the country - and the Clinton River Division displayed some of our ideas: (to be displayed at the Lansing Convention in October) Larry Wolohon showed his O-scale GN caboose which will become a bed & breakfast (the prototype is at the Isaac Walton Lodge, at Glacier National Park) Terry Bossick built Yummy Crummy ice cream shop, based on a prototype in Florida. Mostly spare parts from Terry s work bench and hobby store people Ken Scherer brought the start of his diorama of a caboose in Eldon, MO. The former Rock Island unit is used for storage of the town s Christmas decorations and lights Kent Aughe built a diorama of the town of Monon, Indiana, with its namesake RR caboose (although the prototype caboose is actually a repainted EJ&E crummy) Phil Doolittle designed a Florida Land Development sales office after one in Marathon, FL which used a passenger car as an office. Substitute a former Coal & Coke caboose (from Bill Gawthrop), and there you are! (Photo in next column) 6 of 8

7 The 2018 North Central Region Convention is coming soon! October 11-14, 2018 in Lansing. Check our website to access the HOTBOX (NCR newsletter with registration information). If you have not attended a Regional convention, you are missing great layouts, clinics, tours, and camaraderie. 8 THE 2019 NORTH CENTRAL CROSSING CONVENTION IS COMING Clinton River Division 8 is the sponsor and host. If you have not yet volunteered to help make the convention successful, now is the time to step up. We still need a Volunteer Coordinator, a Company Store Coordinator and some folks to solicit sponsorships and door prizes/raffle prizes. Speak with one of the officers and we will steer you to the light task you will enjoy. Remember the dates - November 7-10, 2019 Troy Community Center THE CLINTON RIVER DIVISION 8 LAYOUT Phil Doolittle wrote about A Port to More Fun in last month s Car House. The short version is that the Division would built a portable switching layout for train shows, conventions and our own meetings to give newcomers the opportunity to run trains. For Division meetings, show and tell locomotives could have demonstration runs. We need a volunteer to coordinate the building of our layout and several people to help with construction. The Division will finance the project. If you have a strong interest and a willing spirit, please speak with Phil or another of the officers. Thank you for assisting in this project. 8 of 8
