5 5Things 5 to Know About Urban Coyotes 1. Feeding coyotes can lead to aggressive behaviour. Do not feed coyotes directly or indirectly. Place your garbage at the curb by 7 a.m. instead of the night before. 2. Coyotes can view pets as a threat to their territory, and may attack. Never leave pets unattended, even in your backyard. Always keep dogs on leash when walking outdoors. 3. Residential neighbourhoods are an ideal coyote habitat. Ensure your property is tidy and free of brush and woodpiles. Close off openings under decks and sheds. 4. Killing or moving coyotes only makes room for a new coyote to move in. Relocating or killing coyotes is not the answer to reducing coyote/ human conflicts. 5. Consistent hazing will deter coyotes Deterring coyotes takes vigilance. Move a coyote out of a residential area by using hazing techniques every time you see one. Hazing techniques can include: Yell loudly, wave your arms and make yourself look as big as possible Use air horns, whistles, bang pots Throw small rocks, large sticks, cans and/or rubber balls at the coyote Spray the coyote with water from a garden hose or a water gun filled with vinegar. burlington.ca/coyote
