2 History: The original golf course amounted to 6 holes known as the Westport Golf Links and was created in Shortly after the turn of the century, the course expanded to 9 holes, which were kept closely cropped by the owner s flock of sheep. In 1928, Scottish architect Thomas Winton was hired to turn Westport into an 18-hole course. Despite battling the Great Depression, Winton successfully designed and finished the course shortly before his death. Some have said it was his finest completed work. During the 50 s, Westport became the summer home of famed Scottish pro Henry Picard. His reputation and the beauty of the course attracted such celebrities as Babe Ruth, Stan Musial, and Harry Carey. For over 100+ years, Westport has worked hard to keep its reputation as a must play course in the Adirondacks/Lake Placid/Lake Champlain region. Today, the course measures over 7,000 yards and rewards its players with the essence of spellbinding views of mountains, lake, and the natural scenery of the Adirondack Park and Westport, New York. 3 Westport, New York: The location of Westport, New York on Lake Champlain and its close proximity to the Adirondack high country and the Green Mountains of Vermont create a regional setting of outstanding beauty, a striking image of a Town close to nature. This regional setting is part of a vast landscape system stretching along a north-south axis from Montreal to Albany, consisting of the 136 miles of Lake Champlain and the lake valley, the Northway Interstate I-87, and the Amtrak rail line. The center of Westport New York is just four miles east of the Westport Exit 31. Westport is also accessible via the Crown Point Bridge and the Essex- Charlotte Ferry-- both twelve miles from the center of Town. The edges of this long valley are formed by the two mountain ranges. The Town of Westport, New York is one of the settlement nodes along this landscape and is located where the Champlain shoreline at Northwest Bay, the Northway and the Amtrak station converge to within five miles of one another. By the mid-nineteenth century, Westport was a fashionable resort town. Its social scene was regularly reported on in The New York Times and by the Boston press. Like many other East Coast resorts, Its popularity gradually declined, starting in the 1930s, as first automobiles and then airplanes made possible a wider selection of vacation sites. Since the 1950s, however, Westport's lakeshore property has steadily increased in value. Although once most of the "summer people" stayed for weeks, now distinctions are not as clear: there are "year-round summer people" whose livelihood stems from outside Westport, weekenders whose principal residence is fairly close by (for example, Albany, which is two hours distant by car), and commuters to workplaces as distant as Plattsburgh, New York, and Middlebury, Vermont. Westport is home to Camp Dudley YMCA, the oldest summer camp in continuous operation in the United States, founded in 1885 by Sumner F. Dudley who moved to Westport in Meadowmount, the summer school for string players founded by Ivan Galamian, is about eight miles from the center of town. Westport is known as the ice fishing capital of Essex County. Westport is also home to the only professional theatre in the Adirondacks proper. The Depot Theatre was founded in 1979, and operates out of the historic Amtrak railway station. The 136-seat, air-conditioned theatre hosts plays and musicals on its main stage during the Summer months, as well as an annual Gala. Outside of the Main Stage season, the Depot Theatre holds play readings, fundraisers, and receptions in the Depot Theatre Gallery located in the lobby.
