2 Tourism Profile Slovenia Cities and Regions Slovenia is one of the smallest countries in Europe in total the country has around two million inhabitants largest cities in Slovenia 1 Ljubljana (80 ) Maribor ( ) Celje ( ) Kranj ( ) Novo Mesto (8 ) Nova Gorica ( ) Koper ( ) 8 Velenje ( ) 9 Domžale (0 ) Ptuj ( ) Slovenia consists of 11 municipalities (11 with the status of being an urban municipalitiy. This is the only administrative division in the country, as there are no counties/regions. The biggest municipality is Kočevje in the South-Central part of Slovenia (boarding Croatia) with a surface of square kilometers - the smallest municipality is Odranci in the Eastern part of the country with only square kilometers. The capital Ljubljana is by far the largest city in Slovenia with a population of around inhabitants. Source: SI STAT

3 Transportation Infrastructure The majority of the tourists from the main source markets arrive by car the main alternatives are Ljubljana airport and Koper port Annual airport passengers in Ljubljana thousand The airport in Ljubljana generates 8 % of the total volume of annual air passengers in Slovenia. The only two other international airports are Maribor and Portorož. In 01 Ljubljana airport registered 1, million passengers. This is a further reduction and continuation of the negative trend over the last couple of years. Since 008 Ljubljana airport lost around 8 % of its annual passengers. Slovenian ports There are three ports on the Slovenian coastline. Koper, the most important one, recorded a strong increase in maritime passengers over the last couple of years, reaching more than maritime passengers in 01. The passenger terminal is suitable for large sized cruise ships. Two smaller ports are in Izola and Piran. Road connections Slovenia has a good road infrastructure with more than 00 kilometers of motor- and expressways. They are also part of the Pan- European Corridor X connecting Slovenia with the neighbouring countries. Good road infrastructure is important, as the majority of the inbound tourists are coming by car and Slovenia is an important transit country between Southeastern and Central Europe. 4 Importance of Tourism Tourism is an important industry for Slovenia as it represents 1, % of the GDP and contributes USD.9 per inhabitant Tourism Contribution to GDP 01 (in %) Contribution to GDP 01 (per inhabitant, USD) 1 Croatia (, %) Malta (, %) EE. Austria 11 Slovenia 1 (1, %) (1, %) Albania (,0 %) Bulgaria (1, %) Iceland.81 1 Austria Switzerland.1.1 EE. Ireland Slovenia Sweden EE. Belarus 0 Macedonia Moldova Currently the travel and tourism industry contributes 1, % to the national GDP of Slovenia the country is therefore ranked on the 11 th position out of analyzed countries in Europe. At the same time, this figure did not change significantly over the last 1 years, as the contribution was 1, % back in 199. The more meaningful figure, when it comes to evaluate the importance of tourism for a country, is the total contribution per inhabitant. In Slovenia the total volume of the travel & tourism industry to the GDP was USD.9 per inhabitant. This is on the level of countries like Portugal, Ireland, Sweden, Finland and Italy. Source: WTTC

6 Number of Branded Hotels Slovenia has only a very limited number of hotels operated by international hotel operators Number of hotels of the five largest international hotel chains Hotels Slovenia Hungary Bulgaria Poland Turkey Germany Intercontinental Wyndham Marriott Hilton Accor Hotels in Slovenia Location Intercontinental - Wyndham - Marriott - Hilton - Accor - None of the five largest international hotel chains (Intercontinental, Wyndham, Marriott, Hilton and Accor) operates a hotel in Slovenia. In comparison to the surrounding Central European as well as CEE countries this is a surprising fact Hungary for example has already hotels of those hotel chains, Poland and Turkey. The main reason for this is, that the existing hotel properties are hardly suitable to be operated by international chains (due to size, seasonality, etc.) Beside the local hotel chains (e.g. Life Class or Unitur) there is also one Kempinski, an Austria Trend and a Best Western hotel in Slovenia.
