2 Lucknow's History James Sommerville, who came to be known as the Father of Lucknow, was the owner of Lots 57, 58, 59 and 60 on the first Concession of Kinloss. After purchasing the property from Eli Stauffer, who had built the first sawmill in 1854, south of Blackhorse, Sommerville had this property surveyed into village lots and put them up for auction in September The settlement was named after Lucknow, India, because of the memorable events associated with that city in the quelling of the Indian Mutiny in the fall of A number of the original streets bear the names of the generals who took a leading part in the saving of India for the Empire. There was much controversy as to whether the village should be incorporated and annexed to the County of Huron or the County of Bruce, due to the fact that the village straddles the boundary line between the two counties. When all was said and done, the Lieutenant Governor issued a proclamation (June 1874) annexing the incorporated village of Lucknow into the County of Bruce.

3 The original water system for the village was built in 1889, and included water mains and a series of hydrants. At the pump house, steam was kept for 24 hours a day to ensure a bountiful supply of water should a fire break out. A modern domestic water supply and fire protection system was approved in 1930, and consisted of a standpipe, a new pump house on Ross Street with a fire pump and pump controls, more water mains and hydrants. Three more wells were drilled in the following years. Lucknow currently has a population of A province-wide municipal reorganization in January of 1999 created the Township of Huron- Kinloss when the villages of Lucknow and Ripley and the townships of Kinloss and Huron amalgamated.

18 Lucknow & District Fire Department The early history for the department is vague, however, records show a purchase of a hand pumper in 1864, a short six years after the founding of the village. The hand pumper was used until 1889 when the village waterworks was completed. The department re-organized and was equipped with a new hose reel that can be found today in the archives of the Bruce County Museum. In 1969 the village's former police car was purchased for the department. In 1962, the department went to dial up phones, with five installed in firefighters' homes and a sixth at the fire hall. The fire department is now on a central dispatch call system. After having many homes, a new fire hall was built at the west end of the village in 2010, at a cost of $1.1 million. The department has fought its share of major fires in the village. In 1930, the 3 storey Cairn Hotel (580 Campbell Street); 1964, the Crest Hardware store where four businesses were lost (626 block of Campbell Street); 1968, the Lucknow Public School was completely gutted by fire (Havelock Street); and in 1993, after being rebuilt following a major fire, Treleaven's Mill (457 Campbell Street) was destroyed once again. Since 1977, after the forming of a joint fire board, the department now serves the village and surrounding rural areas of Huron-Kinloss and Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh and responds to an average of 150 calls a year dealing with emergencies, both fire and medical.
