1 28 AUGUST 2 SEPTEMBER BEGINNING IN OVIEDO AUGUST 2018 A THRILLING ROUTE THROUGH NORTHERN SPAIN; THE WAY OF SAINT JAMES The St James Way offers an original and different way of sightseeing in northern Spain. You'll discover a wealth of monuments, charming towns and villages, spectacular natural attractions For those who are staying in Oviedo the last days of August, the Organizing Committee suggests going through the primitive route, which starts in Oviedo and finishes linking up with the French route, in Palas de Rei. The primitive itinerary recreates the route taken by King Alfonso II the Chaste in the 9th century to visit the tomb of James the Apostle when it was first discovered. It passes through the woods and valleys of Asturias. PILGRIM KIT PROVIDED 6 STAGES OF THE PRIMITIVE ITINERARY ACCREDITING DOCUMENT AS CERTIFICATE UNIVERSITY OF OVIEDO FOUNDATION c/ Principado 3, 4th floor Oviedo, Spain
2 1 Throughout history many pilgrims went across the way of Saint James. Some people are inspired by an interest in culture, others do it out of a spiritual conviction, yet others love the chance of adventure or approach it as a personal challenge. The local organizing Committee proposes 6 stages of this itinerary, that correspond with the primitive way. 1: Oviedo-Grado 2: Grado-Salas 3: Salas-Tineo 4: Tineo-Pola de Allande 5: Pola de Allande- Berducedo 6: Berducedo-Grandas de Salime Itinerary Oviedo - Grado 25,6 km 7 h. 9 8 ACCREDITING DOCUMENT The pilgrim s accrediting document is the heir of the old letters of safe-conduct that ecclesiastical authorities gave to those who went on pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, to certify their condition and ask for accommodation and attention during their way according to Christian charity. These days, pilgrims use this document to have access to hostels as colleting stamps from the different stages to prove their pilgrimage. In Oviedo, you can get the accrediting document in the following locations: pilgrim s hostel, Cathedral and Basilica San Juan el Real. We can also help to provide it. The usual accommodation for the way of Saint James is in hostels. They do not accept bookings, but provide accommodation on a first come, first served basis, giving priority to walkers, the disabled, horse riders and cyclists, in this order. Guests are required to respect the corresponding internal rules, opening hours, hygiene, let others rest and contribute to a spirit of peaceful coexistence. for the first time on the pilgrimage. BACKPACK The choice of backpack is one of the key points. The normal weight limit for backpacks is 10% of our body weight: in any case, not more than 8 kilos for women and 10 for men. Footwear is another important choice. You should use practical and comfortable shoes. St Jame s way is a hiking activity. It is important to break them in at home and not wear them HEALTH ADVICE The way of Saint James requires extra effort in relation to daily life. This is the reason why you should pay attention to your diet and healthcare.
10 9 You are strongly recommended to have a simple medical checkup, so you can know you are in good shape and that exercise will not harm you. For this activity we recommend you to bring as foodstuffs something with high sugar content, such as nuts and dried fruits, chocolate, sweets, bread and drink in your backpack, also for snacks. You should have a light lunch. You can make good use of the pilgrim menus served in many bars. These meals are modest but reasonably priced. The heaviest meal should be dinner, rich in proteins, after you have finished the day s stage. It is very important to drink a large quantity of liquid, above all water. It is the only drink which really avoids dehydration. Energy drinks are a good idea too. You should also look for shade during all the time. Sun in August can be strong. Stop whenever necessary along the way.
