4 Amazon Voyage The Greatest Voyage in Natural History Delve deep into the pristine Pacaya-Samiria Reserve, a 5-million-acre labyrinth of flooded forests, lagoons and peaceful creeks. Traveling upriver from the inland port of Iquitos, you voyage into villages and tributaries not accessible by any other means and rarely visited by outsiders for an authentic view of Earth s greatest wilderness. Day 1 Friday VOYAGE ITINERARY ARRIVE LIMA Fly independently to Lima, and overnight at the Swissôtel. Day 2 Saturday EXPEDITION HIGHLIGHTS View wildlife on hikes, excursion boat rides & kayaks in the Amazon. (B,L,D) Days 3-8 Sunday-Friday AMAZON RIVER & TRIBUTARIES Spend the next six nights aboard a comfortable riverboat navigating deep into the tributaries of the Amazon a web of forests and lakes that pulsates with a chorus of birdlife, far-off calls of primates and flashes of butterflies. More than 1,300 species of birds, 40,000 plant species and grey and pink river dolphins can be found in the lush, ever-changing jungle we know simply as The Amazon. Enjoy unprecedented access to three habitats, varzea, igapó and palm-flooded forest, including the deep reaches of the protected Pacaya-Samiria Reserve, for the greatest diversity of wildlife sightings. Nighttime excursions may reveal caimans, capybaras, common potoos, frogs and other nocturnal wildlife. Periodically throughout the year, guests may even release turtle hatchlings. IE s daily excursions include pre-dawn birding, enriching presentations, school visits in local villages and even piranha fishing! Learn about the lives of the Ribereño people as we visit villages perched along the riverbanks. This is a fantastic opportunity to stroll through their gardens learning about medicinal plants from a local Shaman. Depending on the villages visited during your voyage, you may also see an IE-funded water treatment tower or home filtration systems. HIGH WATER SEASON (DECEMBER-MAY) Forests in the vast Amazon Basin are flooded, so you can go deeper into the forest on excursions boats and get into smaller tributaries. This allows you to see some of the wildlife that may shun the main course of the river.
