TOUR CODE: GRADE: D/P OCTOBER - NOVEMBER Oct - 09 Nov 08 Nov - 23 Nov 16 days duration IN PATAGONIA Exploring and walking at the end of the world
HOLIDAY INFORMATION TOUR DESCRIPTION This information is additional to our General Information Booklet, which is enclosed. Important note: Although the walking content of the holiday is graded D, we will walk right at the top of the grade on two days. However, it would be misleading to grade the whole holiday at D/D+; on both of these days it is possible to cut short the walk, although amongst such magnificent scenery we believe that most group members would not choose to do so! Patagonia is a huge area of mountains, lakes, glaciers and barren plains. It is a place that has inspired adventurers, artists, poets and writers since the Spanish conquest. A visit will make it easy to understand why. It can be an inhospitable place if you visit at the wrong time but a clear day walking amongst the jagged peaks of Fitzroy or through the lakes under the towers of Paine must be amongst some of the most rewarding outdoor experiences. We start in Buenos Aires, one of the great cities in the world, before flying south to begin our walking adventure in three centres chosen to give you the best possible experience of the walking in Patagonia. At El Chalten we walk under the stunning shadow of the Fitzroy massif. From El Calafate we can explore the Perito Moreno Glacier. We take the land route through the Andes into Chile and the Torres del Paine National Park. Saving perhaps the best till last we have a huge choice of possible walking here, always with the Towers of Paine as a backdrop. By way of contrast we recross the Andes and fly back to Buenos Aires where we spend sometime to get to know this most European of Latin American cities. A tango night is included and perhaps a trip across the River Plate to Uruguay (not included, easily arranged but expensive) make for a busy but rewarding schedule. It is worth noting that public services, cleanliness and hygiene standards in Chile and Argentina are generally excellent. This is an exciting holiday full of interest and scenic beauty in countries whose infrastructure compares favourably with many in Europe. You can enjoy all the scenery with levels of comfort similar to those you would find whilst walking in the Alps. ITINERARY Although the planned itinerary is as follows, it is possible that some changes may occur. Day: Overnight accommodation: Daily itinerary: Meals: 1 In flight 2 Buenos Aires Depart London Heathrow for the overnight flight to Buenos Aires. Morning arrival in Buenos Aires. Transfer to our hotel in the city where we spend one night. Afternoon sightseeing in Buenos Aires. D
Day: Overnight accommodation: Daily itinerary: Meals: 3 El Chalten We fly from Buenos Aires to El Calafate, and then travel by road to El Chalten for four nights. 4 El Chalten We will have three spectacular full day walks from 5 El Chalten the mountain village of Chalten with the chance - weather permitting - to see Fitzroy and Cerro Torre, 6 El Chalten two of the world s most breathtaking rock peaks. 7 El Calafate 8 El Calafate 9 Torres del Paine Returning south we drive about 90 mins to El Calafate town where we stay two nights. We have a day trip by boat out to see the Perito Moreno Glacier and will hopefully see it calving into the lake. This would justify the holiday on its own. The drive from Calafate to Paine takes about 5 hrs. It is 2 hrs to Cancha Carrera, the Argentine border, across Patagonian steppe then another 15min to Cerro Castillo, the Chilean border. Border crossing shouldn t be too time consuming but be prepared for a wait if there is a queue. From the border it is another 2½ hrs to Paine National Park with the alpine views improving all the way. B,L,D 10 Torres del Paine Three days walking in the spectacular scenery of the B,L,D 11 Torres del Paine Torres del Paine National Park- an impressive mountain, forest, lake and glacial preserve. Some of B,L,D 12 Torres del Paine the walks can be at the top end of the holiday grade but the views should justify the effort! B,L,D 13 Buenos Aires 14 Buenos Aires We travel back across the Andes to El Calafate and fly to Buenos Aires where we stay for two nights. We spend the day looking around this most Latin of cities and hopefully travel out to see some of the country outside the city. 15 In flight Leave on the overnight flight back to London. B 16 Arrive London Heathrow.
HOLIDAY GRADE & WALKING PROGRAMME: This holiday is graded D/P. Each evening, the leader will discuss the programme for the following day. If you do not wish to join in with the suggested programme please let the leader know. Patagonia is wide open big sky country, there are few trees so wherever you look you will see broad open vistas of stunning landscape. On this holiday we do not plan to walk up to any peaks but instead enjoy walking a distance back from the mountain peaks so you will be best able to enjoy the views. You will not be disappointed. The walking is generally very good on recognised paths although it can always be a little boggy underfoot. The vegetation tends to be ground hugging with stunted bushes, shrubs and flowers. Because of the open terrain you will doubtless see all kinds of wildlife which should greatly add to the experience. The following list of possible walks is intended to give an idea of what to expect. We would hope to include some of these walks in the holiday. Mount Fitzroy Base Camp, El Chalten. A linear walk rising through woodland onto open Moorland with great views of Fitzroy. Ascent/descent 300m; 15km (9 miles), 5½ hrs Sendero Al Pingo, the Peninsula and Icebergs at Lago Grey, Torres del Paine. These are two walks that combine to offer great views, abundant birdlife, beautiful spring flowers and a close up experience with glaciers. Ascent/descent minimal; 15km (9 miles), 4 hrs Camping Pehoe and the Catamaran, Torres del Paine. A great walk across generally flat open terrain with great views of the towers and a catamaran ride to start. A introduction to walking in the Torres del Paine NP. Distance 18km, Ascent/descent 100m; 18km (11 miles), 5½ hrs Please note all our walks at El Calafate, El Chalten and in Paine will be accompanied by knowledgeable local guides who add enormously to the experience. They know the area, the wildlife, the culture and the history. You should make every effort to ask questions as they are only too pleased to share the knowledge with you. Most transport costs associated with the programme are included in the holiday charge however there is a great expectation for tips.
TRAVEL INFORMATION We will travel from London Heathrow to Buenos Aires and return with British Airways. Travel within South America is by road and air. Details of your baggage allowance will be confirmed in your travel documents, sent to you approximately 10 days before departure. Please expect a baggage weight limit of 20kg on internal flights in Argentina. It will be possible to leave luggage in the hotel in Buenos Aires whilst we travel to Patagonia. If you are joining and leaving the holiday in Argentina, we assume that you will meet and leave the party at our hotel in Buenos Aires. If this is not your intention, please let us know in writing at least 5 weeks before departure. PASSPORTS & VISAS Please refer to Section 2 of the enclosed General Information Booklet. A passport is required which should be valid for 6 months beyond your intended stay in Argentina and Chile. Your passport is often required when checking into hotels and when changing money, so carry it with you on these occasions. No visas are required for UK nationals in either Argentina or Chile; you will be issued a tourist card valid for 90 days. It is a good idea to carry photocopies of the personal details pages of your passport. Should you lose your passport, this may assist with the issue of replacement documents and your return to the UK. Please note no meat, vegetables, fruit or nuts can be brought into Chile. Any attempt to do so may result in confiscation and a fine being levied. Passport, visa and health requirements can change at any time. It is your own responsibility to ensure that you inform yourself from a professionally qualified source on, and comply with, such requirements. Advice on vaccinations is available from your GP, or can be obtained from the Medical Advisory Services for Travellers Abroad (MASTA). In addition, general travel advice is available from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office at LOCAL CURRENCY Please refer to Section 2 of our General Information Booklet for details. The currency in Argentina is the Argentinean Peso and in Chile the Chilean Peso. ATM facilities are available in several of the centres especially the cities and obtaining local currency should not be a problem. Although none of the hotels (except in the Torres del Paine National Park) exchange currency, there are exchange offices, banks or other exchange facilities in all other centres. If you are bringing cash US Dollars are most useful. Most hotels used accept MasterCard and VISA credit cards.
PERSONAL EXPENDITURE All organised excursions mentioned in the itinerary are included in the holiday cost. There is very little additional cost to be paid locally in regards to the noted itinerary, however if you wish to take any optional excursions, or visit sites not mentioned, these will be at your own expense. It is difficult to estimate an allowance for spending money, however about per person for the trip should be sufficient for lunches, drinks, any optional visits, and personal tips. In order to simplify tipping, we strongly recommend that you allow your leader to take care of making sure tips are given to hotel and restaurant staff & to local guides and drivers. This will be done using some funds provided by Ramblers Worldwide Holidays plus, if you wish, a contribution from you, which he/she will collect during the holiday. We suggest an amount of 45 per person for this, although this is a discretionary amount. Hotel drinks, particularly imported spirits can be expensive. You will need to allow extra for souvenirs and gifts. Major purchases can often be charged to a credit card account. Please note that the estimation of local costs relating to this holiday is based on currency exchange rates valid at the time of the publication of our summer 2013 brochure and this Holiday Information sheet. Any fluctuations in exchange rates may impact on this estimation of local costs. Please check with your bank or foreign currency provider prior to your holiday to enable you to plan your spending. ACCOMMODATION AND MEALS Accommodation is in comfortable tourist class hotels and lodges in twin bedded and single rooms with shower and wc. Electricity supply is generally 220V AC at 50 HZ. 7 Where possible, we recommend that you use safe deposit facilities at the hotels however, be careful not to lose the keys; there is a charge to have them replaced. Breakfasts and dinners are included in the holiday charge, from dinner on the first evening in Buenos Aires to breakfast on the day of departure. Lunches are not included except for four days at the Perito Moreno glacier and on walking days in Torres del Paine. Please note that vegetarian eating is not widespread in Argentina or Chile and some tolerance or patience may be needed at meal times. HEALTH & FITNESS Although the tap water is generally safe to drink, it can be heavily chlorinated with an unusual mineral balance which can upset some travellers stomachs. To be on the safe side, we suggest that you drink bottled water, avoid ice in drinks and also use bottled water for cleaning your teeth. Those who want to be extra vigilant may prefer to stay away from salad stuff that could have been washed in tap water. You should be in a reasonably fit state of health for this holiday. The itinerary involves much travelling, some early mornings and the walking will be of Grade D standard. On some days, when we travel between different centres, travel will take up most of the day. We ll make frequent stops to stretch out legs and for refreshment on these days. You may wish to visit the website which is provided by the NHS Scotland, and gives vaccination, disease and malaria advice for your destination. Using this information in conjunction to speaking with your GP or nurse will help keep you healthy while travelling. CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT Please aim to travel light with a suitcase and a rucksack, for passport, valuables and of course, the essential camera! Lightweight walking boots with ribbed soles are recommended and they should already be worn in. Walking shoes or fashion walking boots are not adequate. We recommend you take a waterproof jacket, trousers, some long-sleeved shirts, together with thin jumpers, woollen socks, shorts and lighter summer clothes. Bear in mind the considerable climate difference between Buenos Aires and Patagonia, and the general uncertain weather conditions in all centres! The climate in Patagonia is not dissimilar to that in Scotland. Experienced travellers will have their own preferences for other wear! should help you cut down on the bulk of your baggage. Dressing in layers A small first aid kit, sewing kit, torch and some insect repellent are also recommended.
TRAVELLING LIGHT As we travel between 5 hotels, and you will have to handle your own baggage, please try to travel reasonably light. You should be able to lift and carry your own luggage. At some hotels, the coach may have to stop some distance short of the hotel entrance due to narrow access roads. Also, within some of the hotels themselves, there may be some long walks between the rooms and entrance area, which may include steps. Due to baggage restrictions on flights within Argentina, your luggage should be kept to a maximum of 20kg (44lbs). You should be able to lift and carry your own luggage. PERSONAL SAFETY Please take sensible precautions like leaving your credit cards and passport in the hotel safe and avoiding displays of wealth such as wearing expensive jewellery or watches. Do not carry more cash on you than you need for each day. We recommend to all our clients travelling in major cities that a money belt is used as there is the occasional unpredictable problem with pickpockets. INSURANCE On this holiday some of the walking will be below 2000m. Please make sure that your holiday insurance covers you for guided walking at this height. LANGUAGE Any knowledge of Spanish would be useful
