The first part of your journey takes in Cusco and the Inca treasures that lie scattered across the Sacred Valley. You ll have a chance to visit the salt mine at Maras, raft the Urubamba River and hike up to the ancient terraces at Moray, before then beginning a spectacular six day lodge trek across the mountains to Machu Picchu. After visiting one of the world s greatest archeological sites, you then return to Cusco to enjoy some time exploring the city s abundant treasures. The adventure then heads down into the Amazon Basin and onto the Manu National Park. Travelling around by boat, raft, bike and on foot, you ll spend the next few days visiting coca plantations, clay licks and exploring one of the most bio-diverse landscapes anywhere on earth. 3 ITINERARY DAY 1: LIMA - SACRED VALLEY On arrival to Lima you will connect straight on to a flight to Cusco, where you will be met on arrival and transferred to your hotel in the Sacred Valley. The Sacred Valley is at a lower altitude so you'll be able to spend the next couple of days acclimatising. DAY 2: SACRED VALLEY This morning you will be picked up from your hotel and taken to Maras, which is a small Andean town standing at 11,152ft. After a short tour of the community you will then begin a 2-3 hour walk to Moray and its circled terraces. The terraces were created by ancient peoples who carved the terraces out of 4 natural depressions for agricultural purposes. You will enjoy a box lunch here with breathtaking views of the Vilcanota Mountain Range before continuing for a further hours until you reach the Maras Salt works. The mine is made up of over 3,000 small pools averaging about 5 square metres which are used in the production of salt. Later you will be taken back to your hotel. (B) DAY 3: SACRED VALLEY - CUSCO You'll be picked up from your hotel this morning and taken to Huambutio where you will embark on an exciting white water rafting adventure down the Urubamba River. You'll have a bit of time to practice on the calmer parts of the river before making your way down the river, passing Ollantaytambo and its Inca terraces, through class II and III rapids. The course will finish with the "El Resbaladero" (the slippery one), a class III rapid with waves and whirlpools. Once you have tried off you will be transferred back to Cusco, where you'll have the rest of the afternoon to do your own thing. This evening you will meet with the rest of the group on the lodge to lodge trek for a debriefing of your trek to Machu Picchu. You'll spend the night in Cusco. (B) DAY 4: CUSCO - SORAYPAMPA After an early breakfast you will be picked up from your hotel and taken in the direction of Salkantay Lodge in Soraypampa stopping en route at the Inca ruins of Tarawasi, which is about an hour and a half from Cusco. You'll continue the journey, passing through the mountain village of Mollepata, where you will stop for coffee. Thirty minutes further on by car and you'll begin the four hour trek to Soraypampa. You'll receive a warm welcome when you reach the lodge and will be able to spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing and adjusting to the altitude. (B,L,D)

4 DAY 5: SORAYPAMPA Today you'll be able to choose between rest and activity, and this will really depend on how well you have acclimatised. There is a great 3-4 hour trek, which is in parts quite challenging, to a glacier lake where the more adventurous among you will be able to take a refreshing swim! The trek is a great way of acclimatising and on return you will return to the lodge to enjoy the outdoor Jacuzzi with fantastic views. You'll have a briefing before dinner. (B,L,D) DAY 6: SORAYPAMPA - HUAYRACCMACHAY Today is the biggest day of the trek; you'll be out for between five and seven hours and will trek over a 15,000ft mountain pass. You'll start by trekking up the Rio Blanco Valley, circling Humantay Peak across from the Salkantay. The highest point on the trek is a pass at 4,600m (15,000ft), and you'll stop there to take in views of the snow capped peaks of the Vicabamba Range- the Salkantay being the most prominent towering above you. If you're lucky you'll spot Andean condors. From the pass you'll continue the trek down to Wayra Lodge, the second of the Mountain lodges. (B,L,D) DAY 7: HUAYRACCAMACHAY - COLLPAPAMPA After a fairly strenuous day 6 you'll have a more leisurely breakfast at the lodge before setting off trekking downhill above the Salkantay River through the increasingly verdant scenery. When you arrive at the next lodge you'll be welcomed by a 'Pachamanca' style lunch, which is traditionally cooked underground. You'll have the afternoon to relax at the lodge enjoying views across the river valley. (B,L,D) DAY 8: COLLPAPAMPA - LUCMABAMBA After an early breakfast you'll begin your trek to the final lodge, making your way down to the Santa Teresa River valley, through more populated rural areas with coffee plantations, bananas and orchards. You'll stop for a picnic lunch along the way and after a further hour hiking, you'll be met by a vehicle to take you to the beginning of the 'Llactapata Inca Trail'. From here you'll have a short climb to the final lodge, Lucma Lodge which is set in an avocado orchard. Later this afternoon you'll be able to visit the village of Lucmabamba and you'll meet the local community. (B,L,D)

5 DAY 9: LUCMABAMBA - AGUAS CALIENTES Today you will tackle the final day of the trek to Aguas Calientes. You'll start by trekking uphill for 2-3 hours towards the Llactapata pass, where you'll be able to enjoy a distant but unique view of Machu Picchu from the southwest and also the Llactapata ruins- this is a place that few visitors get to see. You'll have lunch at the view point with Machu Picchu in the distance. After lunch you'll begin your steep descent to the Aobamba River through bamboo forests, orchards and coffee plantations. You'll descend for 2-3 hours before reaching the train station where you will board the 30 minute train journey to Aguas Calientes, across a series of switchbacks. When you arrive at Aguas Calientes you will be shown to your hotel. (B,L,D) DAY 10: AGUAS CALIENTES - MACHU PICCHU - CUSCO This morning you'll have an early breakfast at your hotel to get you to the bus station early for your 30 minute journey up to Machu Picchu. You'll have a complete guided tour of the citadel for a couple of hours and then you'll be able to enjoy an additional 4 hours looking around at your own leisure. Later this afternoon you'll return to Aguas Calientes by bus, where you'll be able to enjoy lunch before catching the train to Ollantaytambo. From here you will be transferred the rest of the way to Cusco, arriving at about 7pm. (B,L,D) DAY 11: CUSCO This morning you'll have a guided tour of Cusco with your guide, starting at the Santo Domingo Monastery. The former colonial monastery was previously the Koricancha Temple, which was the temple devoted to the worship of the sun. You'll also visit the Plaza de Armas and the Cathedral. After a morning exploring Cusco city you will be driven out of Cusco to the Sacsayhuaman ruins, and the temple and amphitheatre of Kenko and finally the red fortress of Puca Pucara. At the end of the day you will return to your hotel in Cusco. (B) DAY 12: CUZCO - PUERTO MALDONADO After your short flight from Cuzco, you will be welcomed at the airport and after a half hour canoe ride along the Madre de Dios River, you will arrive at Hacienda Concepcion. Enjoy your lunch before walking along the Concepcion Trails discovering the primary and secondary rainforest. In the evening we will be on the boats to see the magical river at twilight with its colourful beauty and wildlife. (B,L,D)

6 DAY 13: AMAZON After breakfast we start our long trek through the Tambopata National Reserve to Lake Sandoval. This mirror-like oxbow lake with its biodiversity is home to giant river otters and also howler monkeys, red-bellied macaws, turtles and black caimans can also be observed. After lunch at the Lodge we will explore the jungle from the viewing platforms - 29 metres above the ground, walking from treetop to treetop. Watch out for bright toucans, trogons and monkeys. Afterwards we will go along the Anaconda Walk (30 minutes); a wooden bridge leading over the 'aguajales' swamps and flooded marshland, where amphibians, birds and mammals can be seen. Exploration of the rainforest at night with its special sounds and animals emerging at this time. (B,L,D) DAY 14: AMAZON After sunrise and breakfast, we start our hike to the 'Cocha'. Enjoy a canoe ride in the lagoon of the Hacienda Concepcion. Try fishing in the native style using conservation techniques while enjoying the scenery and observing birdlife. In the afternoon, prepare yourself for your next excursion at the river island, known as 'Rolin'. While we take a boat ride and a walk through the island, you will learn about this flooded ecosystem. Afterwards it is time to visit a clay lick which is minutes from the lodge. Here you will have the chance to learn about the importance of the clay lick walls to the different animals, including parrots. At night get ready for an adventure exploring the nocturnal rainforest and observe animals. (B,L,D) DAY 15: PUERTO MALDONADO - LIMA Retracing the river you head back to Puerto Maldonado and will be transferred to the airport. On arrival in Lima, transfer to the hotel. (B) DAY 16: LIMA Transfer to the airport in plenty of time for your onward flight. (B)

7 ACCOMMODATION AGUAS CALIENTES INKATERRA MACHU PICCHU PUEBLO The Inkaterra Machu Picchu hotel is a sprawling village of Andean casitas on the edge of Aguas Calientes with its own entrance over a small bridge from the main town. The hotel has 85 casitas and 2 villas, all beautifully decorated with traditional and tasteful furnishings. One of the highlights of the hotels is the complimentary excursions offered within in the grounds, such as bird watching, nature walks, a twilight walk and a visit to the famous orchid garden which is known to have the largest species collection in the world. The hotel also has a spectacled bear rescue centre on the grounds and so guests are able to visit the bears, which are hard to see in the wild. The hotel has two restaurants, the café Inkaterra which is down by the river at the entrance to the hotel, across the train tracks, and the main dining room in the central area. Breakfast and dinner is included and the food is surprisingly fantastic given how isolated the town is. The hotel also has a fantastic spa and ponds in the gardens, which are essentially small plunge pools. CUZCO CASA SAN BLAS Located in the historic centre of Cuzco, Casa San Blas is a charming hotel offering 18 rooms and 6 suites, all with stylish, boutique decor. The rooms feature rustic furniture, luxurious bedding and views of the inner courtyard. There is a lounge area, bar and on site restaurant serving local delicacies, as well as a hot tub and a sun terrace offering views of the main square. HUAYRACCMACHAY MOUNTAIN LODGES The Mountain Lodges of Peru offer the first opportunity to trek to Machu Picchu and stay in luxury lodges along the way. There are four lodges as part of the trek; the Salkantay, Wayra, Colpa and Lucma Lodges. Each of the lodges offer en suite bathroom facilities, a restaurant where you'll be served typical Peruvian dishes, a bar and common areas, as well as 3 of them having outdoor Jacuzzis. All the lodges have 6 rooms, with the exception of the Salkantay Lodge, which is the first lodge you'll stay at and has 12 rooms. LIMA

8 CASA ANDINA PREMIUM MIRAFLORES The Casa Andina Premium in Lima is a centrally located in the heart of Miraflores, and is spread over 17 floors, with 148 contemporary rooms and suites. The higher floors offer fantastic views across the city and towards the coast. The hotel is in a great location, close to some of Lima's best shopping and restaurants. Traditionally a residential neighbourhood, Miraflores has recently become one of the trendiest parts of the city, known for its nightlife and gastronomy. The hotel itself has a gourmet restaurant, a café, a heated covered pool, a gym, spa and business centre and the rooms each have en-suite bathrooms and all of the facilities you would expect from a 4-5 star hotel. This is a great hotel for those looking for a hotel within walking distance of shops and restaurants, but it is quite some way from old town Lima, so a taxi would be required to see the old town. PUERTO MALDONADO INKATERRA HACIENDA CONCEPCION Situated just half an hour's boat ride from Puerto Maldonado by the beautiful Lake Sandoval, Inkaterra s Hacienda Concepcion caters to nature and wildlife enthusiasts looking for an authentic jungle experience amidst the pristine Amazonian wilderness. There is a thatched main building containing the communal areas and eight twin rooms, with seven separate stilted cabañas designed in traditional local style. The meals are inspired by tropical flavours and there is a bar serving pisco sours. Enjoy a full range of excursions from the lodge; in particular there are plenty of activities recommended for children, and each child is given an explorer s kit when they arrive. SACRED VALLEY ARANWA SACRED VALLEY HOTEL AND WELLNESS The Aranwa Sacred Valley Hotel and Wellness is part of a chain of hotels in Peru. This hotel has been built on a seventeenth century colonia hacienda by the Vilcanota River. With 115 well appointed rooms of differing standards, the hotel's rooms are decorated in traditional colonial style as well as having more modern and minimalistic decor. The hotel has two main restaurants, a pisco and sushi bar and also a wine cellar. Other facilities include a spa, outdoor swimming pools, a library and a museum.
