The bay has given rise to more fishing world records than any other location in the world more than 200 records in total. Tropic Star Lodge fronts this bay and is known all around the world. The prestigious Robb Report called it the best fishing lodge on the planet and the true crown jewel of fishing. In West Panama, the fivestar Las Olas Beach Resort provides access to populations of yellow fin tuna, pacific sailfish, red snapper, roosterfish and plenty of marlin. 12 Panama City has many attractions that you can t find anywhere else. Sites in the city s old quarter are particular popular with those interested in viewing history firsthand. There are old cathedrals, museums and theaters to explore. You ll also want to check out Las Bóvedas, a lovely waterfront promenade that extends out into the Pacific. Historic & Natural Grandeur The original Panama City was all but destroyed when it was attacked by the pirate Henry Morgan in Today, the ruins of the original settlement are known as Panamá Viejo, and serve as one of the most popular destinations in the metropolitan area. The old street layout and a number of early domestic buildings remain intact and preserved. You can climb a cathedral tower, check out the old town hall and more. In 1997, this area was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO. One of Panama s most important pieces of history is probably the famous Panama Canal. There are three sets of locks near Panama City, as well as the best place to learn the history of this engineering marvel, the Miraflores Visitors Center. If you d rather experience the canal from a ship, both partial and complete tours are available every Saturday that can take you through the locks. The Panama Canal Rainforest lets you discover an incredible ecosystem that is surprisingly located right within the city limits. With more than 50,000 pristine acres, this rainforest is home to 105 species of mammals, 525 bird species and 124 species of reptiles and amphibians. One experienced travel writer said that she saw more of nature in the rainforest around the Panama Canal than she experienced in Brazil s famous Amazon! The convenience is especially appealing; lush resorts in and around the forest provide easy access for visitors on almost any budget. These resorts can provide guided tours of the forest as well as fishing excursions at Gatun Lake. Vibrant Sports & Nightlife If you re a sports enthusiast, then you probably know that there s no bigger sport in Panama than soccer, or football as it s known locally. There are no less than eight professional soccer teams based out of Panama City, four of which are in the nation s top league and four that are in the second-level league. The clubs known as Tauro and Plaza Amador have a classic rivalry that ignites the city with passion whenever they face off. The city s nightlife is lively, with music and dancing available in all three of the metropolis major sectors. The business district is home to many clubs that are open until the wee hours of the morning. Some of the hottest local and international DJs play music throughout Panama City at venues such as the Loft, Pure and Indigo. However, if you d prefer to sample some fine wines in a more relaxed atmopshere, check out The Wine Bar or Tapas y Vinos. An especially unique experience awaits you at Relic, a bar located inside of a stone vault that s attached to the historic wall of Panamá Viejo.
