This nation is also home to the remnants of ancient civilizations, including the Inca and the Mapuche, who settled in the area over 2,500 years ago and continue to live in the southcentral part of the country. Please join me on an exploration of Chile that will take us from the capital of Santiago to the northern reaches of the Atacama Desert, with many stops in between to sample the incredible sights and flavors of the region. Our journey begins in Santiago, with a private tour of ancient art in the collection of the renowned Pre-Columbian Art Museum. We'll continue exploring art at the Museum of Visual Arts, and at the studio of a leading contemporary artist. I look forward to showing you the sights around the Plaza de Armas, and to enjoying one of many meals together at the bustling Mercado Central, a market thriving since the 19th century. In Valparaíso, delight in dazzling views of the ocean from the winding staircases of the Old City, and delve into the world of Nobel Prize-winning poet Pablo Neruda with a tour of his former residence. In Atacama, discover an Inca fortress and a craftsmen's village and then experience some of nature's most dramatic landscapes with visits to salt flats, hot springs, lava fields, and El Tatio, the largest geothermal field in the Southern Hemisphere. Upon our return to Santiago, we will explore Chile's famous wine country in the picturesque Maipo Valley, and enjoy one last day of sightseeing in the capital. On an optional prelude, visit Easter Island to see the moai, the famous stone heads, as well as petroglyphs from the mysterious "Birdman" cult. Pearson Curator in the Department of Arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas, and is a specialist in the arts of the ancient Americas. She was previously associate director of the Getty Research Institute and director of Pre- Columbian Studies at Dumbarton Oaks. Dr. Pillsbury is the author, editor, and co-editor of numerous publications, including the three-volume Guide to Documentary Sources for Andean Studies, , and Past Presented: Archaeological Illustration and the Ancient Americas, which was awarded the Association for Latin American Art Book Award. She is also a recipient of the Alfred H. Barr, Jr. Award for her work on the 2012 catalogue Ancient Maya Art at Dumbarton Oaks. Dr. Pillsbury received her BA in anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley, and her MA and PhD in art history and archaeology from Columbia University. Lunch is at a lively restaurant in the Mercado Central, a market established in the 19th century. In the afternoon, visit Palacio Cousiño, a beautifully crafted 19th-century mansion built in the French Rococo style. Conclude at San Cristóbal Hill in Santiago's largest public park, to enjoy panoramic views of the city and the Andes Mountains. Dinner is at leisure. B, L Valparaíso / Santiago Thursday, October 18 Spend the day in the vibrant coastal city of Valparaíso. Built on the steep hillsides overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the city s Old Town of winding staircases and beautifully restored houses is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tour La Sebastiana, one of Pablo Neruda s former residences, followed by a visit to the Valparaíso Foundation. Meet with its founder, Todd Tempkin, an American contemporary poet and expert in the works of Neruda, and discover the Foundation's current projects, including neighborhood redevelopment and sponsorship of music festivals. Following lunch, view the murals and mosaics of the Open Air Museum and visit an artist's studio. Return to Santiago for an evening at leisure. Visit the craftsmens village of Toconao, where most of the buildings were constructed with volcanic rock from a nearby quarry. During an optional afternoon drive, admire the scenery of Death Valley, Moon Valley, and the Andes mountain range. Visit the on-site museum, housing objects from Chile s indigenous cultures, and stroll through private ornamental gardens. Return to Santiago to enjoy a festive farewell dinner.
