After lunch, commence the ascent up to the campsite at Llulluchapampa. (B/L/D) DAY 5 - INCA TRAIL: Continue up the Warmiwañusca pass to the valley of the Pacaymayo River. After crossing the Runkurakay pass, the jungle becomes visible on the slopes of the mountains. The trail continues through the Puyupatamarca ruins. The views of the Urubamba and the snowcapped peaks of the Veronica and Salkantay make these ruins one of the most beautiful places on the trail. (B) DAY 4 - CUSCO TO SALKANTAY LODGE AT SORAYPAMPA (3,800 M/12,500 FT). Breakfast. Pick up time at hotel starts at 7:00AM to start your soft adventure experience en route to the Salkantay Lodge & Adventure Resort Soraypampa. Visit the Inca ruins of Tarawasi near the town of Limatambo. We pass through the mountain villages of Mollepata and Marcoccasa. Here we begin our trek to Soraypampa, on an old route called the Camino Real (Royal Path) a mild & beautiful 4 hour trek. Check in at the lodge. The first afternoon is spent at leisure to adjust to the altitude. Evening briefing by the fireplace. (Hiking level: moderate). (B/Box Lunch/D) DAY 5 - SORAYPAMPA. This day is spent at leisure for rest or activities, depending upon guests level of acclimatization. The most popular activity at Soraypampa is a half-day hike (Hiking level: moderate to challenging) to a glacial lake where the more adventurous might take a very short swim! This activity is excellent for acclimatization and a first immersion into high-mountain trekking! In the afternoon, guests may choose to trade the glacial swim for a relaxing soak in our outdoor jacuzzi. In the evening, the guide will brief the trekking party on gear and the itinerary for the next four days. (B/L/D) DAY 6: WAYRA LODGE AT HUAYRACCMACHAY (3,850M/12,600 FT). This is the big day: the start of the four-day trek to Machu Picchu. After an early start we will hike up the Rio Blanco valley, circling Humantay Peak across from the Salkantay. The highest point on the trek is a pass at 4,600 m (15,000 ft). At the pass we stop to take in views of snow-capped peaks of the Vilcabamba Range in every direction, the south face of Salkantay towering above us. We will keep our eyes out for Andean condors, often visible in this area. From the pass we continue our descent toward the Wayra Lodge ( Wayra : wind; the place where the wind lives ) our destination for the evening. (Hiking level: challenging with a 15,000ft mountain pass). (B/L/D) DAY 7: COLPA LODGE AT COLLPAPAMPA (2,800M/9,200 FT). Today we begin our trek by hiking downhill above the Salkantay River, through increasingly verdant scenery. The Colpa Lodge is located in an open promontory at the confluence of three rivers. The outdoor hot tub in this lodge has prominent views of lush green mountains and a small, far-away, local town. (Hiking level: easy to moderate) (B/L/D) DAY 8: COLLPAPAMPA TO LUCMA LODGE AT LUCMABAMBA (2,100M/6,900 FT). Early morning we head down the Santa Teresa River Valley, through more populated rural areas with coffee plantations (said to be one of the best organic coffees in the world!), bananas, granadillas, and orchards. We stop along the river for a hot picnic lunch. After another hour of trekking, a private vehicle arrives to take us to the beginning of the Llactapata Inca Trail (30-minute drive). From the head of the trail it is a short climb (30 min.) to the Lucma Lodge, set in an avocado orchard. We arrive in time to allow for exploration of the small village of Lucmabamba and possible meeting with members of the local community. 5 DAY 9: LUCMABAMBA TO AGUAS CALIENTES (1,900 M/6,200 FT). After an early start and a hearty breakfast, we tackle the last day of our trek. We head uphill for 2-3 hours towards Llactapata pass (2,700 m/8,900ft), where we come upon a distant but quite special view of Machu Picchu from the southwest, a view few tourists ever glimpse; an added value are the Llactapata Ruins, which have recently been restored. Lunch is provi - ded at the observatory, in view of Machu Picchu. We then begin our final descent to the Aobamba River through lush bamboo forests and more orchards and coffee plantations. Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu are a short (30 minutes), scenic train ride away. We then arrive in Aguas Calientes to check-in to our hotel for the night - ucma Lodge. (Hiking level: moderate to challenging). (B/L/D) DAY 10: MACHU PICCHU TO CUSCO (2,450M/8,000 FT). We wake up early to have breakfast at the hotel and then make our way to the bus station for the ride up to Machu Picchu (30 min). A complete guided tour of Machu Picchu will be provided (2 hours). Guests will have about 4 additional hours to explore the site on their own (there is a lot to do and see). Afterwards, we will return by bus to Aguas Calientes for lunch and to go to the train station for the afternoon departure. The train takes us to Ollantay - tambo where a private vehicle awaits to take us to Cusco. Upon arrival in Cusco, transfer to your hotel for overnight. (B/L) DAY 11: CUSCO/LIMA/USA Transfer to airport for your return flight. Then continue by boat to the remote island of Taquile, and a remarkable community where Quechua, the language of the Incas, is kept alive. (B/L/D) DAY 3 - CANOPY WALKWAY-ACEER: Morning visit to the Amazon Center for Environmental Education and Research (ACEER) and later join the canopy walkway, for rare glimpses of bromeliads and orchids, reptiles and other species that never venture below the tree tops. (B/L/D) DAY 4 - EXPLORNAPO-EXPLORAMA LODGE: Morning walk along the local river trail, paralleling the Amazon. Stops along the way to visit a local Yagua Indian village where you may be able to purchase or trade for local crafts. The walk continues to see the local sugar cane rum "factory" and visit our resident American medical doctor in her Rotary Club sponsored river clinic. Afternoon transfer upriver to Iquitos and to the airport in time for your flight to Lima. On arrival, you are met and transferred to your hotel. 7 Trail System: On this guided walk along the trails, you will discover the incredible world of the Amazon rainforest. Twilight River: On this guided afternoon boat ride down the river from the lodge, you will witness the change from a diurnal to a nocturnal environment: Twighlight Rainforest: On this two-hour walk your expert guide will point out the weird and wonderful nocturnal creatures of the rainforest: tarantulas, bats and night monkeys move to the sound of hooting owls and fighting kinkajous. Butterfly Farm: This one-hour- long activity provides you with an introduction to the amazing world of butterflies at the butterfly farm in Puerto Maldonado. Native Farm: A 15- minute boat ride takes you to a nearby native farm that provides an example of the complicated techniques needed to successfully farm in the rainforest habitat. Rolin Island: After a short boat transfer from the lodge, you will spend one and a half hours on Rolin island. This island is flooded annually during the wet season and therefore harbors a distinctive rainforest ecosystem. Canopy & Wetlands: A five- minute boat ride takes you to the Canopy Inkaterra Interpretation Center. After ascending the first tower, you will walk for one and a half hours along the suspension bridges that link the seven platforms, on the look-out for giant strangler fig trees, orchids, toucans, woodpeckers, trogons and, with luck, monkeys or a three-toed sloth. Lake Sandoval: A 40- minute boat ride takes you to the Tambopata National Reserve. There, after a one-and-a-half hour walk along three kilometers of trails through the wildliferich reserve, you reach Lake Sandoval. Concepcion: A ten- minute ride up river takes you to Concepcion, home to a botanical garden with over 200 different species of plants. An hour-long explanation familiarizes you with the processing, uses and benefits of the traditional flora. Tambopata: This activity begins with a walk to Lake Sandoval and continued hike to Concepcion through the national park, where surrounding vegetation is home to a myriad of reptiles, birds and mammals. Briolo: This visit takes you down river to Briolo creek, renowned for its abundance of fish. Your expert guide will identify the best possible fishing areas and assist you in the art of luring onto your plate one of the Amazon s 2,000 different species of fish, including the famed piranha and the delicious chapaga.
