2 FISHING FOR LIFE: 1-Background A-The real title is: Improving Local Management Of Tropical Coastal Resources In The Face Of Climate Change For Economic Wellbeing Of Local And Vulnerable Communities (hacia el mejoramiento del manejo de recursos costeros tropicales bajo la perspectiva de cambio climatico para el mejorar la calidad de vida de comunidades costeras vulnerables). The project is the result of the Researchers Links-British Council workshop developed by University of Manchester and Heriot-Watt University in November 2014 ( Marine Science and Technology:Promoting UK-Colombian interdisciplinary research collaboration and career opportunities ). title FISHING FOR LIFE was selected by the community (because this title was too long, easy to forget and difficult to digest by the people)

3 FISHING FOR LIFE: 1-Background B-As any INSTITUTIONAL LINKS grant (Newton Funds-British Council) it aims to develop FORMAL LINKS between British and Colombian institutions through activities that may offer a direct economic impact on Colombian local communities. We expect: 1-To develop an inter-institutional research based program with training and management solutions. Research with inclusive approaches (participative research) Management solutions will include local practice Training will promote sustainable management to improve economic wellbeing of local and vulnerable communities 2-Staff and students exchange, internships, MoU s, internationalisation processes 3- At least 2 participative research proposals, with local government support,and an economic assessment of expected results. 4-To develop a website for the project.

4 FISHING FOR LIFE: 1-Background C-Our project focuses on coastal biodiversity, ecosystem services and resources management because: - 40% of world population, including Colombia, depends on coastal ecosystems for their economic prosperity. -Colombia is a mega-diverse country so it is more sensitive to Biodiversity loss under climate change scenarios. -Colombia considers its coastal/marine ecosystems of Strategic importance due to the services they offer to the community. -The Colombian Government allows the use of coast/marine natural resources to boost economy to maintain sustainable development and improve welfare of local communities the ecosystems must work properly and the people use them sustainably.

8 FISHING FOR LIFE: 3-RESULTS 1-We selected community leaders for the workshops (fishermen, women, young students) from visits to the community (escuelas itinerantes) run by Colombian institutions.

9 FISHING FOR LIFE: 3-RESULTS 2- We opened a formal call to select 3 professionals from UK/EU (MSc level on-stirling University) and one to select 3 professionals from Colombia (BSc-Hons level on- Unicartagena) to work for 6 months in the project (6 internships in total). All speak Spanish and English fluently!!! Colombians with letter of support from communities Europeans with knowledge of Latin America

10 FISHING FOR LIFE: 3-RESULTS 3-We run 2 workshops on sustainable management of coastal resources: (conservation biology, ecosystem services, sustainability, the tragedy of the commons) A-Marine communities-isla Grande (37 representatives) B-Dique Channel communities-granja LISMAR (30 representatives)

11 FISHING FOR LIFE: 3-RESULTS 4- We identified 18 ideas of potential projects of common interest from Marine workshop. And 27 ideas from Dique Channel workshop.

12 FISHING FOR LIFE: 3-RESULTS 5- The community selected 3 ideas from marine and 3 from Dique Channel to develop formal proposals. 6- They also selected one representative to work with staff and students on formal proposals (writing workshop).

13 FISHING FOR LIFE: 3-RESULTS 7- We are now working on 6 research/socio-economic proposals with the community representatives selected.

17 COLOMBIA -Granja Lismar-LISMAR: is a small enterprise focussed on native freshwater fish stock (e.g Bocachico for locals/aquaculture, NGOs or government/repopulation) and nonnative fish stocks (e.g. Tilapia/ local markets) Fundacion Planeta Azul Caribe-FUPAC: is a NGO focused on sustainable development of local communities and how to improve the welfare of vulnerable communities.
