Your driver & guide will meet you at the hotel reception after you have checked out of your hotel for your transfer to the Central Pacific coast of Costa Rica. The Carara Biological Reserve is one of the most popular National Parks to visit in Costa Rica due to the immense amount of biodiversity found in the area and its easy accessibility. This protected area is home to 48% of Costa Rica s bird species, and is also an ideal location to spot scarlet macaws, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, antbirds and manakins. The park is in a transition zone between the tropical dry forest and rain forest and protects the river basin of the Tarcoles river, where you will be able to spot crocodiles. Your guide will share stories about the parks history and the rich biodiversity found in this area. Their trained eye will help you spot the abundance of wildlife, and with just a little luck you ll see snakes, lizards, frogs, deer, peccaries, monkeys, sloths. At the end of the hike you will stop for lunch at a local restaurant, where you can enjoy a home cooked traditional Costa Rican meal. At about the half way point, you will stop for a private guided Crocodile Boat Tour. The adventure takes place on the Tárcoles River, one of 4 rivers flowing out into the Nicoya Peninsula, and home to one of the world s largest crocodile populations in the wild with individuals measuring up to 15ft long. In addition to the crocodiles, over 50 different kinds of birds can be seen on site, including the very rare scarlet macaw and a great variety of resident and migrant waterfowl. Our first stop is at the Poas Volcano National Park, where you will have a chance to walk right up to the craters edge. As we ascend up the central valley mountain range we will notice a change in temperature and vegetation dotted with coffee plantations fern plantations and strawberry farms. Considered by most to be one of the most breathtaking sites in the entire country, the Poas Volcano sits high above 14,000 acres (5,666 ha) of various habitats and life zones which make up Poas Volcano NationalExcept for the area around the main caldera, the park is full of dense vegetation and small wildlife. Sightings of the 79 species of birds that have been identified inside the protected zone including the quetzal, emerald toucanet, black guan, sparrow, hummingbird and robin are common. Few large mammals are found inside the park, however, smaller, less conspicuous critters such as marmots, coyotes, rabbits, squirrels, snakes, frogs and a plethora of insects are present. The different zones inside the protected area mainly include cloud forest, mountain rain forest and very humid low mountain forest. As Costa Rica s most well-known crafts center, Sarchi is famous for its colorfully painted oxcarts and oxen yokes national symbols of Costa Rican folklore and traditions. The tradition of painting and decorating oxcarts started in the early 20th century. Back in the day, wooden carts pulled by a pair of oxen were the main mode of transportation in the mountainous country, especially to transport coffee beans to markets.
