The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu (also known as Camino Inca) is a hiking trail in Peru that ends in the Inca sanctuary of Machu Picchu. It consists of 45 kilometer of well-preserved ancient trail. It is Located in the Andes mountain range. The trail passes through several types of Andean environments including cloud forest and alpine tundra. Settlements, tunnels, and many Incan ruins are located along the trail before ending the terminus at the Sun Gate on Machu Picchu Mountain. The Inca Trail requires an ascent to beyond 4,200 metres (13,800 ft) above sea level, which can result in altitude sickness. Concern about overuse leading to erosion has led the Peruvian government to place a limit on the number of people who may hike this trail per season, and to sharply limit the companies that can provide guides. As a result, advance booking is mandatory. A maximum of 500 people are allowed on the trail each day, of which only 200 are trekkers, the rest being guides and porters. As a result, the high season books out very quickly.
AT A GLANCE Tour timing: 4 days/ 3 nights Tour level: Moderate, though still difficult if you have average fitness. When to go: The best time to visit is April through October, it s the busy season (especially June to August), but it s also the dry season. Altitude: 2,680 m/8,817 ft to 4,200 m/13,818 ft Difficulty: The trek is rated moderate; any reasonably fit person should be able to cover the route. Temperatures: From minus 4ºC to 28ºC Trek permits: Yes, required. 500 permits are issued daily. In the peak season, the trail is booked months in advance. Acclimatization: Minimum 2 days at altitude recommended. Please note.- The Inca Trail is closed February. TREK ITINERARY DAY 1 control point and we must show the permit and the entrance to the Inca Trail and enjoy the beauties that this trek offers. Today s trek will be for 15 km and approximately 8 hours; we must arrive to Llulluchapampa camp where there are no other trekkers. From the beginning, we have three hours on relatively level terrain as we follow the course of the Urubamba River, rewarded with superb views of Snow Mountain La Veronica (5,750 masl). The easy walk passes through a forest of giant cactus and native bushes. Continuing our trek, we ll arrive to the Inca town of Llactapata (Up city) discovered by Mr. Hiram Bingam at 1915; where still exist great terracing system that was used during Inca times for growing maize; a prestige crop that needed irrigation in the dry highlands. The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu starts once we pick you up from your hotel at a.m and board our tourist bus. Ensure you have your original passport and ISIC student card (if applicable). The bus journey to trailhead (km 82) takes approximately 3 hours and half. This journey will reward you with specular views of the Sacred Valley and we ll pass the town of Urubamba and stop at colonial town of Ollantaytambo to have breakfast also here you can purchase some items for the trek, don t forget some coca leaf for the altitude and to leave your K intu (offering) at the dead woman pass; we ll follow the Sacred Valley until Pisccak ucho known as the km 82; where we will find the After a short rest, we ll continue another 15 minutes down to Cusichaca Valley and continue through this valley until Huayllabamba (3,000 m) followed by an uphill climb through dense forests and along a stream to our first camp at Llulluchapampa 3,800 masl where you can see several species of birds. With luck we ll see hummingbirds, falcons and blackchested buzzard eagles. * Maximum elevation: 3,800 m * Minimum elevation: 2670 m * Campsite elevation: 3,800 m * Distance: km * Approximate trek time: 7 8 hours
DAY 2 Dead Woman s Pass The adventure starts at 07:00am. After breakfast, we ll continue with the uphill toward the highest pass of the trek (Dead Woman Pass 4,200 masl), you can walk at your own pace and stop to get your breath whenever you like. From the camp, you can see the highest pass ahead. The path climbs for two hours along a large number of steps, some of them newly laid to protect the mountain from erosion. Once the full group arrives to this pass, we l take a rest break before beginning a steep descent into the Pacaymayo Valley here we ll stop for lunch. In the afternoon, we ll begin the second ascent, this time to the ruins of Runcuraca (Round Balcony), located a bit below of the Runcuracay Pass (4,000 masl). From the second pass, in clear weather you can look back to the Dead Woman Pass and forward to breath-taking snow-capped mountains of Pumasillo (Puma s Claw). From here, most of the trail is downhill or gently undulating until we reach the imposing ruins at Sayacmarca (inaccessible town) located where the Andes end and where the jungle start; continuing the trek, we ll cross the cloud forest and arrive to Chakiccocha camp at 3,600 masl. And enjoy the sunset at the surrounded mountains. * Maximum elevation: 4,200 m * Minimum elevation: 3,600 m * Campsite elevation: 3,600 m * Distance: km * Approximate trek time: 7 8 hours DAY 3 We ll start at 07:00 a.m. Today is exceptionally beautiful because of the landscape, the Inca ruins and incredible paved trail with white granite stones laid by the Incas hundreds of years ago (and more important for your lungs, there is a lot more down than up). There are about 3,000 stairs descending from Phuyupatamarca to Wiñaywayna, we will descend from 3,600 m to 2,600 masl in 5km; so take care with your knees. If you have had knee or ankle injuries an extra porter is recommended so that you are not carrying extra weight. * Maximum elevation: 3,600 m * Minimum elevation: 2,600 m * Campsite elevation: 2,600 m * Distance: km * Approximate trek time: 5 6 hours
DAY 4 Get up very early to arrive in time to Intipunku, (The Gate of the Sun), and view the first sun illuminating the imposing Machu Picchu; the trail comes to a narrow flight of stone steps; after Intipunku we still have half hour walk down to the famous view from the terraces at the end of the Inca Trail. Take your photos now before the crowds arrive; the guided tour of Machu Picchu should finish between 10:30 and 11:00 a.m after that you will have extra time to explore by yourself Machu Picchu. Each itinerary has several scheduled departure dates throughout the season. Our all-inclusive, no hidden extras pricing policy combined with longer, creative itineraries and the use of quality ground services attracts people who have high expectations of their travel experiences. WHY TRAVEL WITH SUNRISE We own most of our operational bases. This ensures that we can provide high quality trips of exceptional value with no hidden extras. Our Inca Trail Trek is all inclusive, so there is little need to pay for anything once your trip commences until it ends. Our hands-on approach and years of experience has ensured a safety record second to none as we ve pioneered some of the most unique itineraries in the adventure market place today. SUNRISE PERU TREK has been seriously committed to responsible travel and true sustainability since we began in 1999 when we established our philosophy and stated ideal which was to take only photographs and leave only footprints. Almost two decades of pioneering adventure travel has proved the positive conservation outcomes when travel is managed for sustainability. We believe a responsible, long-term vision can deliver true sustainability and with the participation of all our clients and business partners the challenge is being met and achieved.
ESSENTIAL DETAILS You will land at the Belasco Astete International Airport in Cusco when you first come to Cusco. Our travel representatives will receive you at the Airport and then transfer you to a hotel in the city of Cusco. That will be our first task after you land in the country. The itinerary then follows in the coming days. There are some restricted trekking destinations in Cusco and Machu Picchu which require special permission from the government of Peru for the all trekkers. They also need to pay a fixed royalty to trek some of the selected places in Cusco and Peru. Some of the restricted trekking destinations like Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, Salkantay trek and Inca Trail, etc. require special trek permit for the all trekkers. However, there won t be any such problem as we, the company, will look after the legal formalities in securing the trek permits for the clients. It will be our responsibility to secure trek permits for you. As most of the trekking destinations in Peru exceed 4000 meters of altitude, high altitude sickness is one of the common problems faced by the trekkers. High altitude sickness can be very fatal and dangerous if you are not prepared for the same. Some of the trekking destinations like Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, Salkantay trek, Ausangate trek and Choquequirao exceeds and nears around 5,000 meters of altitude with chances of high altitude sickness. However, if you are aware of the problem and if you take special measure, then altitude sickness can be avoided and will not be much of a problem. As we have experienced trekking guides and a team of experienced hand, altitude sickness will not be a problem and even if it occurs, it will be handled well by our team members. kit is of immense help and importance during long tours and trek as you never know what will happen next, even regarding the health of the trekkers. Availability of medical kit is very paramount as it will help to provide immediate medical attention to the needy person. Problems of high altitude sickness, shortness of breathing, dizziness, etc. are the ones frequently encountered during the trek. Presence of medical kit helps to resolve any of such problems and provides immediate relief and medical attention to the person who is in need for the same. Travellers should also carry a basic travel first-aid kit as medical facilities are basic throughout these countries. An important item to include is a liquid or gel hand sanitizer and/or alcoholic/sanitary wipes, as they will aid in personal cleanliness and hygiene throughout the trip. The local tap water should not be consumed, so any water treatment tablets (ex. iodine), drops, etc, would help. If you have any pre-existing medical condition, you must inform SUNRISE PERU TREK prior to the purchase of the tour, and upon arrival, to the TOUR GUIDE so he/she can be prepared to help you. Are found in the areas visited. Mosquitos are more prevalent in areas that receive more rainfall, and sand flies, though generally found on the coast, can also be found in dry & dusty conditions inland. Both tend to come out in the early evening and early mornings. Protective clothing, and insect repellent are highly recommended during these times. Even when days are cool please be sure to drink a minimum of two litres of water and refrain from drinking to many diuretics, as while when travelling outdoors the breeze can dehydrate you quickly as well as the heat. Whenever we embark on a tour package or itinerary, we are fully prepared of the possible consequences or the untoward incidents, and hence our team carries a separate medical kit. Medical It is normal for people travelling overseas to get an upset stomach due to a change of climate and food. Please make sure that you wash your hands and stay away from street food.
Although Inca Trail is not a technical mountain trekking, it is a moderate challenge and the rigors of altitude should not be underestimated. Remember that the Salkantay pass is 1,200m higher Cusco and 2,200m higher than Machu Picchu! The pace of your ascent coupled with good acclimatization will help you on the trek but it is essential to be mentally and physically prepared before you start. Regular hikes are one of the best ways to prepare, increasing frequency and length, as you get closer to the trek. All aerobic exercises such as cycling, running, swimming and funnily enough aerobics are good for strengthening the cardiovascular system. Generally, any exercise that increases the heart rate for 20 minutes is helpful. Travelling responsibly is all about making good choices. It's about ensuring you have an incredible trip while also having a positive impact on the local environment, community and economy you're travelling in. How can you be a Responsible Traveller? See our tips below: Choose to travel with a responsible travel company like us! We've already offset the main carbon emissions of your trip, so your footprint is already lighter. Consider offsetting your flights when you book your trip/flights with us or your travel agent. Bring a refillable water bottle and some water purification tablets (or a Steripen) to cut down on plastic bottle waste. Be an animal-friendly traveller. Only go to venues that respect animals by allowing them to live normally in their natural environment. Steer clear of venues that use animals for entertainment or abnormal activities and/or keep animals in poor and unnatural conditions. Eat at local restaurants, buy from regional artists and support social enterprises so you can contribute directly to locals and their economy. Always be respectful of local customs and ask permission if you want to take a photo of someone. Learn a few words of the local language and engage with the people around you.
Carry a cloth or re-usable bag so you can avoid plastic bags. Share your thoughts with us by completing your feedback form after your trip. This helps us to continue to improve our commitment to responsible travel. MEALS & BEVERAGES Included meals are noted on the tour itinerary at the end of each day. We plan included meals to provide you the best possible enjoyment while on tour. Please check your itinerary for what meals are included on your tour. BEVERAGES Beverages are not included. You may order alternate drinks, including bottled water, sodas, and alcohol beverages with any meal, and will be asked to pay for them upon completion of the meal. Your Tour guide will advise if payment will be required in cash or if credit cards are acceptable. Hotel rooms are usually equipped with a minibar stocked with ice, soft drinks, and other beverages, but we recommend you check the prices before consuming, as they can be quite expensive. Many hotels also require a refundable deposit for the minibar key. BREAKFAST Breakfast is included. Each hotel provides a buffet or hot continental breakfast items. Breakfast items may include whole-grain or white bread, croissants, cereals, eggs, bacon, fruit, yogurt, and rolls. ALUNCHES & DINNERS Lunches and dinners are generally not included in the daily itinerary. Some people prefer to grab a quick bite and continue to explore the area, while others may want to try a local restaurant, bar, or pub. Your Tour Guide will be able to provide you information on local restaurants to consider for dining on your own. Included lunches will have a set menu to choose from and will include tea or coffee. TAP WATER Tap water is generally unsafe to drink throughout the Peru. We recommend you purchase bottled water for sightseeing and excursions. Bottled water is also common in restaurants.
