5 January 12, NEW YORK Foreword This is the first time that Spink London has produced a dedicated auction of South and Central American banknotes, and we cannot recall another uniquely South American paper money auction elsewhere. We have decided to call it the Andean Collection, since that range of mountains runs the entire length of the continent. The collection is similarly wide ranging and encompasses banknotes from virtually all the countries in the region. All three of us have been greatly struck by the wealth of types, colour and history among these banknotes, all produced by such a huge range of printers. While this catalogue contains some superb rarities it represents only a fraction of what the continent has to offer. We are sure that in years to come, Spink will be able to say this was the first among many great South American collections. South America is among the last frontiers for banknote collecting, the market for which has over the last few decades become a mainstream hobby, with explosions of interest in China and the Far East joining the well established markets for British Commonwealth, European and North American paper. Africa and Southeast Asia have both seen tremendous growth over the last few years too, so let us hope that this auction creates some excitement both within and without the South American collecting fraternity. We hope to see many of you in New York, but wherever you decide to bid from, we wish you the best of luck Andrew, Barnaby and Thomasina 376 3
